I didnt want to submit anything till I was happy with the drawing, but I thought I should get my idea out there.

Doesnt make much sense yet but hopefully it will when I tidy it all up.

Slightly changed the setting. I am going to do a quick version in 3D next so I can visualise the scene better. Then possibly redraw it.

New idea. The brief says that the emotion of the scene should be paramount. I decided that portraying an emotion in a landscape journey isnt as easy as I first though.

So I got thinking about other journeys, ones that arnt so obvious. At the moment my favourite is a kid whos just been put to bed by his mum scared of surviving the night. The journey of a nightmare and how long the night seems when you are afriad.

So I came up with the idea of a mum just closing the door and behind the kid 'nightmare world'.. definatly needs more thought :)

What do you think ? The door at the far side of the world is the morning with a small shine of sunlight.

Ive started to model the mother closing the door. A few hours on her head, making her look old but not melting is quite hard :) hehe

Just a quick render to see how the head works in the environment. Im liking it, I like how the shadows work across the face.

yup yup,

Hi there, this can end up very nice, really.
Being that said, it might not really be a "journey begins", but more a "morning not arriving as fast as needed" or, a "frightening night start". BUT I'm pretty sure this can be a really nice image.
I see it in 3 main colors, one for the mother scene, one for the night, and another for the morning light. It will be nice !

Keep it up

Ni2ko - I was thinking exactly the same thing, a 3 colour image. Orangeish for the mother (warmth), colourless blue for the bedroom and I am undecided about the background colour.

Hey Jon

I absolutely love your idea, i was kinda thinking of something similar - so i'm back at the drawing table ;)

I hope you finish it, cause it's a great idea.

Looking forward to seeing more updates :)

Iím thinking about compositing at the moment. This image is 2 renders layered up in Photoshop, I shrunk the door as I thought it was too large.

A problem I can see at the moment is how I can show fear in the eyes of the boy in bed if he is going to be that small on screen. As he is hiding under his covers you only see the top half of his face as well.

I am also wondering how I can end the near wall to allow the bedroom to be seen. I am thinking about modeling 2 versions of the hall way. One nice and warm, and another being taken over by the boys nightmare. Then I can blend between them to show the nightmare is spreading. The wall is in decay. Maybe

Another update. Working all day really gives you little time of an evening to work on this :)

I am still working on the compositing of the scene as I model it. Iím still thinking how I can visualise a nightmare. Iíve started to think about what you are feeling at a time like this, the night is never going to end hence the clock on the floor. You arenít sure whatís real and u are breaking up metaphorically, especially a kid, so the floor is breaking apart.

This is a real challenge!

This is awesome, I totally understood the idea just off of this current image. This looks like an exciting concept for the journey. I also like the basic lighting colors you have, it definitely gives the right feel.

I think I need more excitement in my image, also I need to give the image more of a Ďstartí

So I came up with the idea of the bed sucking the poor boy into its covers. The sheets have been lifted up and lit from behind. A creature of some kind is in silhouette through the sheets and at the same time you get the impressed 2 trap doors are waiting to slam shut on the poor boy, starting his journey.

Iíve started to model the character in the bed. I was hoping to get it modeled tonight, but it doesnít look like I will have enough time so I decided to post a WIP.

I think Iím tapping into the emotion, getting close to that perfect terror moment. Iíve taken inspiration from Scream and The Shining.

Is it going too far? Defiantly a more dramatic image.

I really like the idea, and the modeling is great! theres alot of character and emotion in the models :)
keep up the good progress *, the bed sucking idea is alot more exciting

Thats an interesting take on it -- normally 'hiding under the covers' is stereotypically the island of safety for kids. You're definately putting fear on the face, and the cool / warm contrast should add a bit of snap to this. Look forward to watching this one :)

I'm really enjoying this!

Again thinking about composition. I want the boy in bed as large as I can get him on screen, I want to show the fear in his eyes. However at the same time I need the mother closing the door. Its a fine balance :) I'm liking how this looks at the moment, really at ground level. I can not think though, of a good reason to get rid of the wall which would be in the for ground to allow everyone to see the events unfolding in the bedroom.

Any idea ?

Another update.. this idea just came to me. From this angle, looking through the breaking floor from the stairs. The mother is totally clueless about whats going on because she can not see anything out of the ordinary. I think its a more interesting angle.

Iíve decided to go back to this angle because the previous image had too much of the image taken up with elements that wouldnít help the image. All I need to show is the mother at the door and the door itself.

I have also decided to put to large mirrors at the back of the boys room. These mirrors, maybe cracked, are the only parts of the wall that remain inside this boyís nightmare. They are reflecting the room as it actually is, complete, peaceful and showing the boy asleep in bed with all of the bedrooms walls intact.

The reason the wall is not there in my image is because its not there in his nightmare.

Now ive finally decided I can really work on the modeling!

Any image lives of dies on its lighting so I decided I had to teach myself how to light properly.

Even though my image is at night time I am learning how to do day light, then ill move on to night time.

Im getting better, not there yet but its fun!

Ive started to add in more detailed models, unfortunatly due to the low quality of the render the details are hard to notice :) I can only do the odd really good quality render as it takes so long on my PC. Once more of the modeling has been done I will post one.

I am going to model the entire bedroom with the boy in bed for use in the mirrors. Then I can make everything go to hell :)

Very interesting idea, is crazy man, but is so good. The sketch that give my atention is this, I think more strong and dramatic, like a nightmare. I don't now if you already decide, just my opinon mate. About the modelling process, really I liked so much, no crits so far. I'm waiting for more :bounce:

Thanks for the support! I am always open to suggestions, I have not locked down the final shot yet no. I think I will do that once ive modeled the entire bedroom.

I think the problem I had with that shot was so much of it was taken up with the staircase in the foreground. There wasn't the room between the separating floor to give a good depiction of a nightmare and what awaits the boy on his journey.

After saying that... nothings ever final :)
