Ok, here is my first sketch. Just testing ideas.

Idea was to make some kind of tree creature/monster-child starting a scary journey into the light - away from its home - dark, haunted forest. With pedal car, of course.

Well, I would be happy to have your sketching skills... Good luck and have fun... (you will, I see).

I didn`t notice the pedal car before you metnioned it, it seems a bit masked with the bushes.

I`d personally prefer a tricycle ;) But apart from joking, do you plan to use some Huorn/Ent-like creatures, or just grim-looking tree?

sweeet sketch!

Such a cool concept!
It would be cool if you could somehow display the emotions of Stickboy as he vetures out into the light. Perhaps he takes one last look at the dark forest..Just a suggestion of course.:)

robobot

Diffa: Kiitos :)

Vedic kings: Thanks!

Silgrin: Thanks. Tricycle would be good idea since its easier to identify and its more "stylish" too.. I'll think about it..
I think I won't make any other creatures since I wanted stickboy to be alone with no one stopping him.

Matellis: Thanks!

zem: I was thinking that after I finished drawing. I want to add somekind of emotion since its one criteria wanted in challenge outlines - I was thinking compositing him closer but I really wanted him to look small and already on his way so I placed him further. We'll see what happens.. :)

Great piece of concept work!

Theres a great twist in the idea too. When I first saw the image I thought it was a human child starting on journey into the dark woods. From your description, you are flipping this idea on its head though and doing the opposite!

Pete.

The dark shaded trees really has the scary atmosphere. Have you consider putting colour onto the kid and its pedal car, maybe a sepia type of colour to bring the character to life. I think it would probably also represent heading home safe and sound. Already looking this good at an early stage, I'm sure there will be more of it. Keep up the good work.

I like the feel of this. It might look better if he was heading into the dark forest. At the moment the dark forest looks like the starting point.

SergioKomic: Thanks for the help & comments :)

Loris_: Thanks!

ecura: Thanks mate! I didn't want to focus too much on the colors as I wanted to composition. I will add some subtle coloring but I want kinda graphical B&W feel to it.. we'll see.. :)

gpepper: Thank you sir!

Ok.. here is a rough sketch what stickboy might look like.

I still have to think about his face and what is the best way to show expressions since I want to show his face somehow.

I also tried him with tricycle since it's way cooler ;) (thanks Silgrin)

Great start! I like the idea that a creature of darkness would be afraid of the light and it really makes for a great composition.
Maybe he has a bark dog (not a dog bark) that wants none of that light stuff.

The idea of the dark character heading into the light/not dark and scary world is really cool and original, You might get a greater contrast by showing parts of the actual not scary/dark world instead of just the light, maybe some happy things full of color. Totally opposite of the dark desaturated forest from which he is leaving. Still keep the light though just add some colorful happy details.

very nice concept! I think it'll look very dramatic when finished. Although you've got to drop some more clues as to the fact he's scared of the light. It's a little difficult to tell that he is worried about it, although right now I don't really have any suggestions other than being careful with his pose. Sorry!

But very nice looking concept sketch and lighting. Have fun with it!

Kyan: Thanks!

glenn23: Thanks mate! uuh.. whats that bark dog you mentioned?

kary: Thanks, I'll be seeing you :)

se7enthcin: Thanks bro, one can never have enough reference. Really nice trees too.

glennyP: Yeah, I was thinking that too. Possibly path ahead could be nice, warm and bright greens.. I don't want it to make too "childrenbook-illustrative" because I want the light to be bright so you can get the feeling what stickboy is feeling/seeing. I have to balance it somehow. Good point. Thanks.

mosconariz: Thanks!! I'll keep that in mind. maybe someday.. ;)

animator@large: Thanks mate!

beelow: Thank you sir! I hope so too.. hehe

Kris.s32: Thanks!

burpy: Thanks! First sketch doesn't have enough clues, thats for sure. I'm thinking how to express his emotions better with and without showing his face. I guess it is in challenge outlines that you should show characters face - or is it just suggestion??

I think I'll try couple of things _I have in mind:
A) He is sitting on his tricycle and watching to hanted forest maybe with little bit a sorrow in his eyes
B) He is standing behind the tree lurking curiosly to light with bicycle on the trail
C) He is sitting on his tricycle and bending over curiously but little bit scared to see the light

Problem is that his face isnšt that much expressive, so this Bending/lurking could be best way to show his curiosity and that he is a bit scared too.

We'll see.. :)

theuni: Thanks!! Fire is also good idea, I'll have to keep that in mind too.

gpepper: Thanks! :)

inskipp: Thank you!

monks: Thanks!!

Loris_: Thanks, I like it too. Tricycle has more "character" and suits better this theme. Gives more timeless feeling than pedal car.
sergioKomic: Hehe.. Thanks bro.

Aaargh... That bicycle... Why is it so plant-like?! It`s a small disaster to me, I`m just about to finish a project with a very similar thing. I even considered using such an idea for this challenge. Anyway, don`t think I`ve stolen your idea, please:D:)

Btw, using such a bike in this project looks a bit unclear for me... Does it mean fear of the child that "even my old good bike is against me" or sth like that? Anyway, I`m glad you found this idea useful:)

A) He is sitting on his tricycle and watching to hanted forest maybe with little bit a sorrow in his eyes

I like that idea,
& I love the bike your doing, the idea of things growing like trees is very cool..I'm thinking The Cathedral (http://www.platige.com/index.php?lng=en&tu=27) by Platige would be good inspiration on lighting such a scene

Cheers

I was thinking which challenge i'll participate but I think myself more as an 3D artist as 2D so thats why. Also, I think its more challenging for me to do it in 3D.
I'll just hope I will get the image as good as possible. :)

Silgrin: Hehe, you were the one who mentioned it so ofcourse not.
I used this bike/car to support and show the fact that stickboy is a child since its not that clear by his appearence. I also wanted him to have somekind of "vehicle"

mike_t_3d: Thanks! I haven't seen these metz ads.. Do you have a link or something?

cipher: Thanks!! I try my best to transfer it to 3d.. :)

claudio_jordao: Thank you very much!! Luck is surely needed with this company!

Wow Kari! That's some awesome stuff you sketched out yet! :scream: Good to see that I'm not the only one who likes your sketches and style!

I like the idea that you are going for 'something different' (at least: it seems like you're doing). I'm also often aiming for a more 'original' view on the theme than 'the others'. Things like some surrealism, absurd things and extreme styles always interest me allot, with Jean-Pierre Jeunet, Miyasaki and Burton being the kings of that world! :scream:

Let's wish you lots of fun and luck! I'll be checking for updates regulary!
