Hey I like it!
It draws the viewer to the center, the small dragon, and it it very suttle, becuase of the branches and the negative space...well done.
Question: Although the early sketches did show the journey the later ones seem not too, I am missing something.
Looking good though. Love that polygon style(like others have expressed)

Thanx for nice words. Abou your question, I am not really sure what are you mean. Could you be more specific? If you are talking about creatureīs pose, they are not riged at this time. So, there is no such a body storytelling as is one on the concept sketch. Hope it looks all right now

Oweron, I like where this is going. The scene is starting to look unwelcoming, which I think, ties in nicely with your proposed storyline. The framing is excellent, it draws your eyes in and keeps you captured in the scene. I'm love watching you progress.

Sorry, I will be more specific. On the sketch the little dragon is kind of looking backwards. You can see the cave, but on top of the cave/mountain you can see the lanscape, sort of saying, his journey is going to start over there, it is a suttle message, but there. On the new model, the cave/mountain sort of block this, so the only way the little dragon can see is to the front, and I sort of miss that other message. Anyway that's what I ment, let me know if it was clear.
Good stuff though

Here is another small step. Foliage modeling is almost done. Need to tweak background trees and few little details in foreground space. Enjoy it. Comments are welcome.

Hello here, and thank you all for feedback. By name:
Womgoose - Glad you like it.
Vedic-kings - Yep
CGone - Hope to keep this tempo till deadline.
Gunilla - No no, this is just because I wanted to show foliage with lilīone. The "looking backward" pose will be in final one for sure. Just need to rig them and pose them. It will be later, probably in May. I have texturing and lighting for April in my plans.
ChrisD01 - Happy that this style works pretty good with you folks . Thank you.
apocryph - Thanx for nice words :)
handlebar - So you feel it... thatīs great :bounce:
MT Cup - yeah, the leaf came to my mind just during modeling. Happy you like it. Cheers.

My latest update is here. This should be final for enviromental modeling. Might add or change something later on. Donīt take those shaders too serious, they are not finished at all. After looking at this for quite awhile, my concern is lighting. Bevels catch light quite well. Is it possible for you to incorporate small bevels in the geometry strategically to produce a better interaction between the lighting and geometry?

Hello friends. Looks like big feedback, and I thank you for it :wavey:
Versiden - Glad you found the time to checked out my thread.
Dimi - Thanx for pointing the leaf. Happy you like it.
authentic - Thank you for suggestion. I probably will not play with real lights. Might be just for few problematic parts. Mainly I will go for "painting" them. So will work with Brightness and colored shaders in order to achieve mood that I want.
Silgrin - ha ha, yeah, hell gate. Donīt take my wips too serious  I donīt really want that scary hellish mood.
makaron - ha ha, I have some plans with GPīs skulls too :scream: Just kidding mona, relax...
alvin_cgi - The Flinstones? Man, my childhood memmories are awake
Nomad - Thank you my friend. Happy you like it.

NEOCAPTORX - Hello. Thank you for nice words.
shakes - Yeah, base will be the same just want to add some more thing on it. Keep checkinī this out, ha ha.
se7enthcin - Thanx man. Again, we are thinkinīthe same way. But, this time, I am going to cut that fancy beveling. As I mentioned few steps up, this image will be real lights (almost) free. Keep watching my friend.
MT Cup - Hah, enjoy it now. There will be no skull in final piece. Just freshly dead and freshly sad creature.
rawwad - Vitaj spat! Super ze sa paci
M477 - Thanx for compliment. Yes, not every journey is full of joy. Thatīs what I want to say using some fantasy elements.
icedeyes - Thatīs all right. The skull is here just for fun within WIPs.
Hynol - Thank you. Keep watching.
jamiemccarter - That is so cool that you like it! It was kinda challenge for me, īcause I donīt have any kind of fur plug_in. And I canīt find suitable shader for my XSI.
FlaminGlow - Thank you dude. Now, it is time for creatureīs mesh finalisation. Than, I will run with textures for enviroment. Just want switch within my workflow. Keep watching.

Excellent modeling for the little hero - he's very touching already... it's a fun thing to create other emotions for the critters than the ususal ones... can't remember when I wanted to hug a dragon last :D

Oh stop crying Lil'One! --Very creative and inspiring curved-trees to frame your scene...really like your approach to modeling in general...very stylized, non-photorealistic...exciting...the crooked curves on your dragon's wingtips...his square nostrils...you've really gone far with a stylistic approach many stuck in photoreal approximations find challenging (myself included)...great imagination, thanks for the inspiration!

Hi matt, nice to see your nick here again.
Thanx for nice compliment and about your question - Yes, it is less jagged, and I have few answers why, but, lilīone will look backward so you wonīt see his face in final pict, ha ha ha :p
I want to use some soft surface like SSS on parts like wings, beak, naked body,... like contrast in order to make them closer to "human" and "humanīs feelings"... And I need contrast with background too. I think, it could work. Keep watching.

Oweron,
If you turn the lil' one away from the camera, his eyes will be lost. Won't that mean the tears will also hide? And without the tears, well, hmph. The operatic drama becomes more of a murmer, maybe.
Please please please include the tears falling from the eye. As you know already from drawing out your character concepts, it provides a great contrast (water from a fire breathing lizard), and another chance to use SSS and bright speculars and bizarre reflections.
Maybe its a magic tear, that lights the path to a new, safer life. Or a steaming tear the stinks up the foiliage.
Either way. Please please please make sure to add at least one visible tear. Please :applause:
Oh, and once again, awesome work. :arteest:

Please please please make sure to add at least one visible tear. Please
:applause: you are RANCHER, you canīt love tears... you have to be strong... Aaaahhh, there was no such an idea to use tears in final pict. To me, that was just fun within wip. I know, it looks catchy, but I donīt know, I have doubts... To me, tears will make image more pathetic, cliche like, even if they will be XXL. Plus, there will be RAIN to add some contrast you mentioned. I am going to keep your "please" in mind, for sure  Thank you.

Shesh, am I glad Lil'Fella has a mother! --Like the added touch of giving her breast too... kind of funny on a fire breathing dragon. Speaking of which, you seem to have a thing about breast, eh? Nothing's wrong with that of course -- but what the heck is this?!? : )

If the 'bumpmap' is what you used for the scales then yeah I would say it should be used because it is a huge part of the model and it wouldn't be the same without it.

Terrific turntable poses Juraj! Very expressive...by the way, I agree with your character sheet, she definitely "isn't a chicken" -- although, while camping last year I found one on the side of the road and made a few dragon kabbobs, which tasted like chicken. Very good actually.

Hello here :)
Submiting my enviroment texturing / lighting progress. I will share my Rendertree later on. Everything is done mostly with procedurals (simbiont + native XSI stuff). JPG compression probably kill some details (150kb limit). About lighting - I am using AO for that issue and I will tweak whole image within postcorrections, thats why it looks kinda flat now. Hope you like it anyway :)
Feel free to comment, thank you.

Hi neighbour, :) Thanks for the comment in my thread. I was laughin, coz i also checked your thread often. Very-very cute chars you have and those're also excellent for animation. Your scene is a bit grey for me but it fits with the mood and emotionally correct. maybe some coloured areas in the foreground can give more interesing depth to the image. Color- perspective. This is example of my Render Tree setup workflow I am using for this project. It is basically the same for almost every element of my scene. I love your style and your texturing and your modeling. Its wonderful! I like how your modeling stays true to your concept. I think it is great! The idea is very endearing and sad.
Also I dont know if you said something about this or not as i didnt have the chance to read all your pages, but I would love to see the lighting more dramatic. I really liked that first rendering you did to test the lights. More dark and moody. I think it should be fairly dark around the focal point of the two dragons. Depth of field along with like a mist look though more misty as you go out of the focal point. Maybe not even exactly mist but like smoke after a big fire has been burning and is now smoldering as it rains. That kind of mist. I think right before dawn would be a great time to signafy the end to the beginning and that kind of color sheme and atmosphere would work great. Just letting you know what i thought when i saw your concept art. Hope i didnt talk to much. sorry....;)

This is coming along very nicely! I do miss the older polygonal only style, but this one works. Just don't like those rectangular bumps on the face.

Good morning  (pretty late)
safe05 - Thank you. First cheer up for today.
soapy - Hey soapy! Welcome here and thanx for nice words! Keep watching.
Identity - Glad you like it. Your reply have even more stronger impact to me īcoz I spend almost one year of my life in Dublin. Aaahh, nice memories... Keep watching :)
nerdyninja - Thanx for nice feedback. Yes, I was talking about lights and mood already. The thing is, that I am going to do additional coloring and lightīs tweaking within postproduction stage. That mood on my test you mentioned was done the same way - in AfterEffects, and I want to achieve something close to it. It is crucial to set the mood and colors correct and I think it is more flexibile in 2D than 3D for this project. Love your "mood after big fire" suggestion. Keep watching
Womball - yes, older polygonal only style is my "love" as well. But I think I found the way how to keep that lowpoly feel in my final mesh. Abou that face bump - I know, it looks kinda strange, but I want to keep it there, though. Thank you.

05-10-2006, 05:02 PM
Hi Juraj, the pose look good, tough, in the composition at first sight the body of the mother looks extrange, She may be death but the position she is, is kind of uncofortable and complicated, maybe if she is lying with her belly against the floor like she had a peacefull death and a sad expression on her's face knowing she is leaving her's only son alone...
Good job, and hurry up :)
AdamHerbert
05-10-2006, 06:39 PM
Hey Oweron, Love the models! I agree with Climax though, the mother's body looks strange. I would put her in a more peaceful position with the arrows easy to see. Almost as if she was out defending her nest and came back victorious but seriously wounded and died in the cave next to her baby. Can't wait to see how it runs out!

So, main problem probably is, that I wanted to show as much as is possible from my creatures. That is probably why I did pose mother with that complicated pose and why I did show lilīs face... Uff, I just need to pose them within this week because of my schedule :wip: Thanx again!

I know the feeling of making a great model and then losing half of it to posing. Or simply not being able to see all the great sides at once! hahah. If the view on the right is the final view, then move the little one closer to the camera to create a greater sense of depth. Moma's pose is much better. Now she really looks like she's collapsed in a heap. It's looking more like that fantastic sketch you did.

Actually I think you don't have to observe true scale, you can keep him far from mom and scale him down! (artist always tricks spectators and it's always works on composition;) )

Hey Juray, great job! I like the second image: I feel more the "lonely" condition of the tiny dragon, and the idea of the dangerous journey of a son through the life is stronger. Maybe you can underline the landscape behind with more great and more foggy mountains. Anyway i really like this piece!

Larger view is going to be the final one. I didnīt change it from begining... I only did close view for you in order to see poses better. There you should see "lilīone - sad and ready for journey" and "bigīmom - death by attack of humans - you will see arrows on the ground later + her tongue hanging out"
komsa - i know what you mean. lilīone is already scaled down of real proportions. I might go more with that scaling down. Will see

I'd be tempted to try making the mum double size, and moving her back in the cave a bit to
fit her- that way you would see the size difference between them, and you'd see more nice details of mums body..just a suggestion!

Pose 2 is I think the better of the two.. more dramatic. Shakes makes a good point. Mama could be a bit larger and still fit both the cave and help with the size/distance relationship.

I think you have chosen a difficult angle for this - by placing the mother so much right behind
him the depth will be tricky to show. Have you tried moving her a bit to the left? Maybe lying more with the side facing us? And maybe bring him a little bit further to the front?
But if I have to pick one of these, I agree - the right one reads better.
Keep on tweaking now, you're almost there

I agree with Gunilla on this-what if you only had mum showing from the waist upwards, lying on her side? with head poking out of cave? that way she could be even bigger, and you could move her backwards. good luck Oweron, it will be great- we have 2 whole weeks!

Okay since we're all in love with Lil'One and everyone seems to have a finger in your comp, Shakes may have given the best advice: "come on we have two weeks left" or something like that. --Show the image to people who have never seen anything having to do with your creation of the individual elements in this scene...not those of us who have followed every poly. They probably will not be able to tell the mother is dead, or, what Lil's problem is. That's not a harsh criticism because you've done all the work to make this image absolutely beautiful. Image C with the mom's legs up suggests she is possibly dead.....but this still is very far from clear...maybe her tounge needs to be rolling out or her eyes could be open and crossed or bloodshot -- who knows, you have a better imagination than me(!)...also, it is difficult to understand what's up with Lil...his tears could be more visible...and he could be much, much closer to the camera...the mother's wing completely, utterly obscures his features...it is hard to tell where he begins and where she ends...whose wings are whose and so on -- and besides, one of the most interesting unique characteristics of your work is the super cool styling of his scales, and his pastel shading, which cannot be appreciated when he is so far away (at this resolution).
Everyone is in love with Lil'One -- show him off, let us see his tears and feel his sighs, see amrs dangling...
Well, anyhow congratulations on having come this far...you have created an absolutely wonderful, moving pair of characters and charming set in which to place them. That may be why everyone is so involved in this comp -- we believe in it...we want to see more of Lil'One in the future! Especially the style with which you've shaded him. (And you've been very helpful and supportive to the rest of us....) Hope you find time to continue cooking with your own cool style these next two weeks. This is a favorite of so many!
oceanbluesky
05-14-2006, 05:32 AM
What about scaling Lil by -1 and rotating him 90 degrees so the side of him we now see would be still visible but pointing in the opposite direction, thereby allowing us to more easily read a difference between his and his mom's shapes and moving him closer to camera. ?
I like C also, there is a better balance between characters...
