The idea about the skull is very good, but of course, it was not very visible... maybe less roots and branches here... only suggered the shape around the skull with them... with for the skull a material more visible, which can also constrast with eyes...

You welcome Nico and thanks for your comment. Anyway I don't have so much things to teach to you with Maya !
About the next update, I think that some Huge update will come the next week. Woman and children will be on holliday and I will have the house for me and my computer !

Hey Gilles, finally got to see your tutorial -- thanks so much for posting! I guess so many people had tried to download it yesterday I was having trouble streaming it? Anyhow, really appreciate your sharing. I've been creating a lot of vines too using pretty much the same technique...I was really, really, really hoping there was some sort of quick MEL script which would place a curling spiral along the surface of an object.

A few weeks ago someone on Highend3D posted a script for distributing a spiral along the UV space of a NURBS cylinder but I've only found it marginally useful. One additional tweak which wasn't in your tutorial but which I'm sure you must be aware of is the 'Scale' option on the Extrude node itself...for quickly making the resultant surface collapse into a point on one end...might be occassionally useful? (But perhaps not affording as much artisitc opportunity as tweaking each CV by hand.) --Also have found quickly swiping the poly converted surfaces with Maya's scupt tool extremely useful for making the vines more organic...a broad brush stroke with pull and then push across various sections of the vines tends to make them look less CG. Likewise for placing a lattice around certain sections of the vines to pull them from or around the model base.

Finally, turning both the original base surface and previously made vines into a single live object by combining them into one surface temporarily has been extremely useful. (Select the vines you have already made...select the underlying base model...then use Polygons>Combine to create another surface which can then be used as a single 'Live' base upon which to place additional vines....) Saves a lot of time twisting a curve across previous extrudes...

Any other tips and tricks which you may have that weren't in your tutorial?? Can barely bring myself to spend time on this...it is sooooo labor intensive. Thinking of using the CV Pencil tool (though that may lay down too many CVs?) and also the paint geometry tool to place leaves and such across the vines and model...how do you place your leaves???

Thanks so much again! Wonderful work!

Gunilla: There is a Script for max called "Advanced Painter". It does pretty much the same thing in about a 10th of the time as well as things like painting grass and rocks onto objects which is very usefull however The only draw back is that it can get a bit messy. (You will soon see what i mean ) :)

Thanks so much again! Wonderful work!

I will think of what you said Eric maybe I will find some of those tips useful.
About the leaves I use 3Dsmax particle flow. This is an old technique I use for years, it's hard to find anything else in Maya that brings me such a cool and quick result. I think I will post some tut on it soon !
Thanks again for your comment !

Thnaks Gunnie !
You could do pretty much the same in 3Dsmax. with editable mesh or editable poly you have one option called "create shapefrom edges" when you are in edge selection. just select the flow you want to copy and it create a curve from these edges ! simple...
What ? You find my accent charming ? Are you kidding ?

Hmm - I haven't thought of trying that - I tried to do something like this for My Master&Servants entry ... and ended up to draw all the splines using 3dsnap- it was a real pain and the end result wasn't as good as this. I'll try it, thanks!

No, for the first character, I use GUV tiles from Zbrush. And for the second some 3D texture in Maya.

Womball
04-23-2006, 04:12 PM
Artisan brush in maya? GUV's don't cause seam issues? I'm just starting to learn zbrush, very nice program.

No just some kind of noise, fractal, placed with a 3Dplacement...
About the seams just check the fix seam in the texture option of tools in ZB. Usually I put it around 10 not to have seam in render in another 3D package.

Here is the shader of the extra roots added to the feet and hands.
This is a MISSS shader with many maps and I put another shader connected with a blend color utilities. Each map is 1024 X 1024. The second shader is just some 3D textures of Maya...

Here is the shading network of the other shader used in the last entry. Just few 3D textures... It is applied to the overall roots of the character...

Womball

So using place 3d textures, you managed to create a procedural texture which looks like it was a manually done colour map!?! The only downside I could see to this approach is that it may render slower.

These shaders are only on the root's Master. The other rootman have a bitmap done in Zbrush and applied to a lambert...

Here is a quick screenshot of the shading network of the rootman's shader. Nothing very hard to understand. A diffuse and a bump generated with Zbrush Zmapper plugin. This is a normal map used as a bump with the tangent normal space option we can use in the 2d bump node of Maya 7.0...

No I don't think I will stop to create on a computer, there are so many things really cool taht you can't do with clay !But maybe it would become a new hobbie or a sort of 3D sketches for my creature in the future...

cool work u really rock friend

Thanks Antone ! I was afraid not to be able to do something acceptable but I am pretty happy of the result. The only thing that I didn't like was at the moment which I decided to do the details, clay isn't cool to do that, I didn't manage to add cool detail like I was able to do in Zbrush ! I think I have to test Plastiline or Super sculpey which are cool materials to sculpt.
Yes this was my first try.

Maybe you are right Jesus, but The resolution was told by Cgnetwork's base and I decided to follow this as much as I can. But maybe I will find another angle more cool. Let's see. Thanks.

The harder the clay the easier it is to details. Although its harder to sculpt initally. That's why Roma plastalina #3 is good clay for details. The softer the clay the easier it is to obscure details, but its really easy to create overall forms. Sculpey is very nice, although kind of expensive. Also you have to watch about surface thickness with it. Also are you using metal armatures? I find this an easier way of sculpting organics.

Thanks Nathan ! One of my friend is used to sculpt and he model with super sculpey. Yes in this case there are some armatures...

this is very acceptable dude don`t worry :scream:

This is not completly a Zbrush depth of field, I grab the zdepth in ZB with "grabdoc" and then I compose it with "flou de l'objectif" filter in Photoshop...
I didn't test Maya's Dof too...

gpepper
05-03-2006, 04:01 PM
Ok here is for those who want to know how to do DOF effect with Zbrush and photoshop.

First step, do the render of your scene in Zbrush and export as an PSD and call it "doc":

http://gpepper.free.fr/cgtalk/tut/export.jpg

Then go to alpha option and select "grabdoc":

http://gpepper.free.fr/cgtalk/tut/grabdoc.jpg

This will grab the zdepth of your scene...

Then you have to export it as a PSD and call it "alpha_doc":

http://gpepper.free.fr/cgtalk/tut/export2.jpg

Then open Photoshop and open both documents, alpha_doc and doc...
In the doc file, go to channels and create a new channel, an alpha:

http://gpepper.free.fr/cgtalk/tut/create_alpha.jpg

Duplicate the all document of "alpha_doc":

http://gpepper.free.fr/cgtalk/tut/duplicate_doc.jpg

In the alpha that you have created in the "doc":

http://gpepper.free.fr/cgtalk/tut/duplicate_doc2.jpg

Then go to filter and blur and select "flou de l'objectif" (Excuse me if I don't know the word in english !):

http://gpepper.free.fr/cgtalk/tut/flou.jpg

Then select alpha1 in "source". Tweak with "focal distance", radius, etc... Find what you want...

http://gpepper.free.fr/cgtalk/tut/flou2.jpg

then you will have something like that:

http://gpepper.free.fr/cgtalk/tut/final.jpg

Ok, I think you can do this with any software which can bring you Zdepth...
Have fun ! I hope this tutorial will be helpful...

I agree with azazel... a panoramic view would be cool. So, my vote for number 1 but with more space on the left side
Also number 3 with more space above is an option.

... did that help? :)

Ok, I will check that, Thanks Gunnie ! ;)

You are right Glenn, I think 6 could be great if the Leader would be posed differently. I will do another poses...

Here is the second Layout. I did a symmetry of the pictures because I think that having different point of view gives more to the picture. I have to say that the image coming from the right do it better. What do you think ?
Maybe 1 or 2 ?

I definitely like the angle for 1 and 3 best. I shows the character well and gives a sense of scale to the scene. I think you could go with either one of those or maybe something in between
Where will the other characters be?

I have a przeference for two because the other characters should be around the leader watching in the same direction. But one is cool too.

Where will the other characters be?

Hiya Gilles !

I too think comp 1 and 3 works better , the panoramic side view seems to tell a story , which fits pretty well with the subject ... the flipped versions could be great too , in fact if he's pointing to the left , it could maybe negative ... but it's really personnal taste , and also a minor suggestion ...

Can't wait for the filled image by roots !

Thanks Antone but about the 5 and 5bis the problem is that the leader is seen from his back and I don't think it is good for the comp.

The dof makes it look tiny... besides that, some actual grass, maybe hair or something, would be a nice touch. Even adding some just at the 'skyline' would be probably enough.

Hey , why not puttin' a smaller dof ? ... isn't a whole great new idea ? :D

Grass is looking great but maybe the scene is looking a bit small with that size of grass ... kind of "maquette" don't you thing ? ... but maybe it's due to the strong shadows , and maybe it won't disturb me with the characters in the scene ... so I will wait and see ...

Thanks Eric.
Maybe the things I do in photoshop over expose the eyes and then no contrast is seen...

I'm not so sure that they are so amazing, you are nice ! ;)
If I did more fine work, I wouldn't have such problems exporting between Zbrush and Maya...
I think some bump should be decrease and it will be cool...

Here is the step I've done to create Huge foliage on the tree !
- Bring back your geometry
-create a plane which will be the leave. Apply the texture to it. Maybe you will have to change the pivot to fit well to the texture...
-Create a particle flow and give to it all the things I put on the screenshot !
-When you create a PF source, you have to delete the position icon, and the shape.
-replace them by a instance shape where you will put the geometry which is the leave and a position object which is the shape of the foliage...
-You can let the other parameters llike they were when you created the PF source...
-You can do that for every things you want to generate with a geometry !

Have fun !

Looks cool, but a little grey in the leafs. I think a more vibrant hunter green would work nicely. My name is Nathan by the way Giles. :D I thought you were using maya, your latest screenshot looks like some other program.

Sorry Nathan, I don't know why I called you Eric !? This is not the first time I see you posting here. Strange...
Yeah to generate my leaves, I use 3Dsmax... The first 3D software I learnt...
