Stefan-Morrell 03-13-2006, 06:09 AM looking good
& do look into rendering the scene as seperate elements, foreground, mid, background etc..it will make for easier rendering & more versatility in making the final comp.
looking forward to more
Cheers

good luck with your puter problems- you could always do seperate renders of individal bits and composite in pshop-that's how I'll be doing mine.(oops, Stefan already said this!) looks fantastic so far.

Thanks for all your replys guys!
atra - im not sure how to add ram to my video-card. I have a Radeon X1600 Pro 512 MB PCIe Graphics Ca.
monsitj - Stefan_Morrell - shakes am learning about render layers right now looking in the maya help files. I should have it figured out soon!
the best - lol!
rattlesnake - ill pm you cause im not understanding render layer and yes im using mental ray for maya.
rodrigoessinger - ill keep that in mind:)
luigithekid- yes there are more character to be added, I will move them around tell they all fit:D

Starting to look really good dude, keep it up and good luck!
I like the camera angle in this latest image. The buildings seem more distant, which is better. Having the ground in shot more helps with framing, and also links the foreground character to the buildings. I was just wondering where will the guards be in the picture?:hmm:

guitarGeek - thanks man, just because one may look better dosen't mean it is:) Keep at it, ive only been work in 3d for 4 years, so its a matter of never giving up!
beelow - thanks:)
Hoju - thanks! The guards will be in the middle ground, which the guards will be guarding a gate for entering the city.

The composition is pretty amazing! And the wires look rather clean. Are you using radioistiy for rendering? That could be slowing it down.
Vedic-kings
03-14-2006, 06:37 AM
Womball - thanks! im not sure what radioistiy is, sorry.
Womball
03-14-2006, 06:45 AM
He he. I guess your not using it than. From what I understand, its a way of lighting the entire scene with photons. It adds a lot of time to the rendering, but if used right the results are stunning. Also you can define objects to be light sources or use half sphere (skydome) to emit light that bounces around the scene. However there may be a way of baking it into the scene. Also considering you have a lot of metal objects in your piece you might want to use HDR images. They create excellent reflections.

Womball - thanks! im not sure what radioistiy is, sorry.
Radiosity - Global Illumination - lighting which involves bounced lights to give that "overcast day" uniform illumination. Judging from your latest composition renders, you have it on. (light bouncing off of the beige ground is tinting the underside of your tower tops with the ground color)
Still looking great!

03-14-2006, 08:34 PM
Womball - Hmm.. im using mental ray's Final Gather (FG) with a Secondary Diffuse Bounces (SDB), which has a Global Illumination (GI) effect. So really it takes less time to render:)
the best - Thanks:)
Wintermute - Thank! True, but im using Secondary Diffuse Bounces instead of GI, which has the same effect, I think? I'll have to try the half sphere (skydome) idea. I don't know how to use HDR images:( I'll look into it though!

Hey you:) Yeah im using maya and mental ray. I've only started using mental ray about a year ago, been using maya from 2002. Im getting the hung of mental ray FG etc, but this is the first time I have had this problem (mental ray out of memory), and I see that I still have 800mb left to use?

Wow! Very nice modeling again! A few crits, she is rather skinny at the waist, but that seems to be a popular thing currently. Also her helmet does not give her silhouette any volume. Its just like its pasted on. Seems kind of a downer compared to the modeling of everything else. The pants are amazing.

Hi Josh,
You're working a lot on your project and that's great mate! Good to see a well developed scene. For characters i have a tip for you, check a lot from below. It means when you model a face you should turn the model in viewport to see it from below. It's an easy way to check the position of the bones/shapes and you can avoid some tipical front/side viewport modelling artifacts. I'm not sure i was clear (english...), but probably helps you to create your amazing scene. Bests,
Mark

you have a very good concepts.
nice camera angles and good compositions.
but the characters are not as good as your concept.
they are not unique
your work (sketches) is something that I can remember
but if you have more appealing characters in your work it woul be awesome

you'll be using smooth-bind then. but it really doesn't matter how you paint weights on a hinge joint like the knee, theyre gonna need an extra push to maintain volume. the good news is that you can just drive a blendshape off of the rotation of the knee (as its a hinge joint you don't have to deal with a pose-space deformer). or an influence object. but if you're not animating the character, i would just model the deformation in the pose.
but i guess you know all that,

rocking dude. and i love the sky light. on the down side, the moon gate thingy doesn't read too clearly even if you move it, i think. may need to be bigger?. i love the style of modeling of the city and the characters, but its a shame that you don't get to see two out of the three faces (although the one you can see is great). my man abe looks like he's being surprised rather than leading them, but i think its subtle. this still looking great though, so ignore my crits if you want.

I think ill go back to the old view, when the alien 1 was looking up at the moon-city, but different as I have all the characters and im going to rebuild the moon-city, so the moon-tower will be the fouce of the scene, which I have to make look really good using all kinds of detils etc.

Hey guys:)
Well I came up with a new concept as I was not happy with how the moon-city scene was turning out.
This concept is about a business man named tom who live in america. He is always trying to do better at his job and making more money having nicer things and so on. But tom is so unhappy with life even though he has everything he wants. Tom had to look for some else in life, something that has meaning. One day he meets an interesting old man on the subway going home from work. The old man could see into his soul and see he is suffering with deep lost (eternal being). The old man told tom to go to India to find himself.
And this is the image above, which is tom on the inner journey of peace.
I don't know if this will work, as it maybe to religous!
What do you guys think?
ThierryS
03-27-2006, 07:29 AM
Wow, a new concept, gee! I kind of liked the previous one, it was heading in a good direction. It's all up to you man, you got to feel which picture is motivating you the most, for which one the fire is the strongest, that's when you'll do your best work.
This new concept is interesting and certainly is original!
All my best for this new beginning! Good luck:thumbsup:

don't worry my friend!
take a look at your previous concepts:
your first concept &your #4 concept , it was vey good.
because of good compositing & a wast scene that they are going there. this challenge want this from us!
really i belive you do't bring up your previous concepts, with your modeling!
or you confuse to compositing your 3d image. really i don't agree with yor 3d compositing.!
how ever --->
the is no matter with your previous concept or with a new concept; just take it easy!
good luck my friend... .. .

Think of it this way, you'll just have more time to improve your challenge entry if you decide to stick with your previous entry.
Regardless, good luck with whatever you do decide to go with. :)
Hi Josh
Wow, I don't know what to say :) You have courage to change now
I like the old concept and the new one.
They are quite different.
so it's up to you
well, I like the new one just a little more... maybe it's I alredy have a picture of it in my head :)
It will be a great picture, if you make the texturing well.
I know how Indian cities and willages look like. Textures will make the scene pretty vivid
And I am sure that you'll make it awesome
Enjoy your new journey :applause:

Well looks like most of you like the old concept:D
Thanks to you all for keep me on the right path, if you will:D
What i'' do is use both ideas in one, i'll make the scene more simple, as I think theres to much gong on. And like stavrevstefan said the details are poor. So Ill make my scene more simple and but with the details, then add some India elements to the scene, with the same characters, but it will be the journay of peace.:)

The updates for your previous concept look great! The new concept has a good feel too, it would be a hard choice for me which one to go with. As for the religous aspect of the image, I don't think that should be a deciding factor. It sounds a little like Foundationism to me. ;)

man ..new concept feels really conceptual..is not a really clear idea about journey. ..i mean on a quick aproach it doesnt, but it gives the complete idea of a journey once the people pay attention to it..u make people to really pay attention to your image..so i think is a valid thing too.
i admire your capacity to "change" that way of thinking can get u really high, of course u need to regroup and see if something can rework for your new try..
i think this is what u are going to do..get what still work and make it rich with some more great work..man really want to see your new updates and see how u turn this into a master piece..just keep rocking dude!

rattlesnake - Well I understand what you mean by you really have to look at the new concept to see its meaning. But I plan on just using some Yogis like characters from the future, which are on the journey of self realization. Hey Josh, yeah it was the sci-fi theme that made me think of Foundationism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foundationism). Since it is a fictional religion in Babylon 5. One of the character is a Foundationist and goes on a walkabout to find himself. :p The updates look fantastic! :buttrock:

are you going to texture te buildings like that mix or onlt as sci-fi?

nice.
It looks like it will make a great combination with the old and sci-fi.
but i think the contrast between new and old should be more visible.
new and metalic old and dusty/stonelike.
Good call not to completely change direction, knew you'd work something out! The new direction is cool, I like the vastness of it, and the red of the building is interesting, should give you that modern but old look

Hey guys.
Heres a little update.
I did some simply textures and modeled a flying motor bike thingy.
The flames was done in photoshop, as im not sure how do create heat waves in maya, I do know that the dynamic can create this effect, but I need to read up on that more.
Anyway what do you guys think about the compositing so far?

Hi. Great work so far. It seams that we will both have big architectural structures in the back of the image. ;)
What do you plan to put in the back where the blue is.... or would it fade in to the fog? The touch of the sea and reflections would probably look great in the final.
Well, good luck ... I will visit your thread from time to time. ;)

Very nice work so far.
Compositing wise the image seems to be hanging a bit to the left.
Mainly cause you have the big structure there and the main foreground chars, and the on the right you have the big blue gap.
Mayby it will balance out when you work out the rails at the top right.
Good job so far!
The detailing on the castle looks great, and the bike is cool too. Does it matter if you put flames on in Photoshop? Hope you find a way to get the effect in Maya if it's against the rules

Ok guys I setarted making real textures here:D
I have not done alot of texturing in the past, so this is my weakness.
The texture size is 2521 x 2521, is that good?
Also I use a photo of old metal that I got off the internet and painted over it in photoshop. and created a bumpmap using the texture. I use a planar UVs mapping in maya, which I think works the best for this. I was using a cylindrical mapping but the texture got all distorted in some areas.
Anyways I hope im doing this right!

So heres the two mapping cylindrical mapping looks distored and it seem like the right mapping to use. The planar workd better in the case. You guys have any thoughts on this?
Also what do you guys use, do you take your own pictures for textures or do you download them off the internet?

coochaki - thanks! more coming!
Frederic L. - thanks, the camera agnle will change somewhat in the final render, and yeah there will be more in the background where the blue is:)
M477 - thanks man! I don'y know if its ok to use photoshop or not for the flames, but i'll get it to work in maya, just need to read up on it more:)

Wow. That is quite a large texture for something that will be relatively small in your scene. Do you know your final output size? To give you an idea of pixel ratio to output, a 4096 x 5120 px image will result in roughly a 13x17in (American) or a 346.79x433.49mm (the rest of the world) print. Generally you will want textures that are closer to the camera to be larger. The piece you have there is merely an accessory to a much larger model. You have to figure out how much space your character will occupy on the page and then accommodate your texture to that. You might want to try a texture of 512x512 for that item. This will not only cut down on render time but should still look good with the current distance.
If you have any questions about pixel to output than jump into Photoshop and try a 300dpi setting with however big you want your picture size to be in inches or millimeters and then when you open up the actual file, go to image and image size and change the image size from in or mm to px to see how many pixels you are actually going to be using.
The last bit of information I can give you is this. If your character occupies roughly 2000 pixels you will want his entire body map to be roughly a 4096 map. The reason for this is that the character's texture map should be twice the occupied space. If this doesn't make sense, let me know and I will try to explain it another way.
- Cheers!

hey josh,
the texture of the old metal is rather big. Not that it's a bad thing but you could optimize it all. Best is to make a kind of test-rendering of your scene - if you know the final composition - at the final resolution. Just a simple render. Then you can check the size of the object at the final image. Then you can keep the texture as small as possible. Reason is to keep your ram from freakin out. Reason i say this is because you'll seem to be having a lot of textures and this could be a hell to render/calculate.
Are you using maya by the way?
if you are, and your textures are not pixeled at rendertime - turn off the filtering to get sharper renders. I mean the filtering at the file-node.
About the cylindical-mapping: keep an eye on the center-line of the cylinder and the direction. This is the thing that controls how good your object is mapped.
cheers

Well, texture is too big I think. Try to match your output image size. If you are interested in making rusted material, perhaps it will help, my old work:
http://img228.imageshack.us/my.php?image=beast15f0ni.jpg
http://img212.imageshack.us/my.php?image=beast179ri.jpg
http://img477.imageshack.us/my.php?image=rust0nf.jpg
I made it by blending two materials (material: Blend) - rust and painted surface. Rust is simple, flat, std material with some bump, and painted surface is basic MR with blured reflection and some rust color leaks (don't know it's right word). But it's hard to make nice rusty orange painted surface - orange is too similar to rust.
Texture is free to use. I did it using a lot of free nvidia textures.

getting better all the time. it's really looking profesional grade now. especially the city, you could specialize in 3d backgorunds too! not just characters.
while everyone is right that the texture may be too large, i wouldn't worry too much about it. the reason being that if you make it oversized in your photoshop document and then save out the jpeg/tif for the actual texture, then you can adjust the size of the jpeg/tif to optimize to placement. then if you decide to change your composition and the characters have moved closer too the camera, then you don't have to redo the textures, just use the original size. makes sense?
either way you' obviously know what you're doing. so i'll just let you get on.

Hey guys.
Well ive been very buzy the last 2 days (family life), so I have had time today to work more on my character yahoo!:)
Anyway, the textiring seems to be a lot of work!! I mean to texture even part of the character with a new texture is alot! I guess the whole point is to not to use the same texture all over, which I have done:D Theres only about 4 textures on the whole character as you can see. Well ive been painting skin weight most all day, so he has nice deforms etc:)
Anyway I think for a close up of the alien hes good as far as the smooth bind, now its just the textures!
The pose hes in now is kind of what im going for:)

mmbenya - Well thank you!:)
se7enthcin - Wow thanks for all your in puts!
I do understand most what you said. So I will just use large textures for close ups and 512 x 512 or around that for far away models.
The one thing I don't understand is the part when you talk about dpi, I know all about dpi's, but 300 dpi for all your textures? Maybe use 300dpi for close up and 72 for far away.
This I didn't get
"If your character occupies roughly 2000 pixels you will want his entire body map to be roughly a 4096 map. The reason for this is that the character's texture map should be twice the occupied space. If this doesn't make sense, let me know and I will try to explain it another way."
Could you explain better please, thanks:)
Nothingness - Thanks for all your great info! I checked the filter under texture file and its already off:) Quadratic a good file type? Thanks for the cylindical-mapping tip:thumbsup:
And yes im using maya and mental ray.

Hynol - Thanks for your inputs! What do you mean by matching my output image size? Thanks for the texture, its very nice:thumbsup: Nice robot by the way!
elmasfeo - thank. The flying bike may not be in the final render not sure about it yet.
Cleveland - thanks man! specialize in 3d backgrounds? Well its good to know my work is that good:D Yex the whole texture size thing makes sense, and thats what I plan to do, which I can resize in photoshop and just reload texture in maya:)
thierry2005 - thanks!

Not 300dpi for all your textures. What I meant was 300 dpi as print resolution output. you can have an image at 72 dpi with an equivalent pixel ratio and it will print well. Don't worry about that too much right now. Use 72 dpi textures.
What you do need to worry about is the actual area that your character occupies. The pictures I have included are examples. For example, the cobblestone texture in both pieces is a 2056x2056 map. The total area that the cobblestone occupies in the image to the left is just over 2600 square. If you look at the sharpness of the texture in comparison to the one on the right you should begin to understand what I was talking about. The actual occupied space of the texture in the image. The one on the right is "sharper" (though not by much, this is kind of a bad example). The reason the image on the right is "sharper" is mainly because it occupies an area closer to the map's original size.
http://www.coldseatproductions.com/CGTalk/cobblestoneDemo.jpg
To take what we talked about above into better perspective. The image below shows a bounding box of a 512 pixel area. The character in the middle occupies a 512 mapping area. Now, while this character is rather simple, you could probably get away with maybe a 512 map or even a 768 map but a 1024 map would be advised. The reason being, the character texture map should be twice the occupied size of what ever the final resolution of the image may be.
http://www.coldseatproductions.com/CGTalk/512imageArea.jpg
Hynol and Cleveland are right. Depending on what you plan on doing with this image, you may want to go bigger with the texture but the fundamentals are the same. Make sure that you are thinking about your final output resolution/print resolution when you are making the textures. The bigger you want your image to go, the bigger you will want your textures. You can always down size your textures but it is harder to add detail to a lower resolution texture. I hope this is a better explanation.
