edit: click the pic for larger view.

First concept sketch.
I feel like using a dragon for this challenge... I know, I know, cliche etc. :D

This concept is about two children, chosen ones of course, who are to embark on their epic journey to defeat the evil ...(insert here the name of your most favorite evildoer)... and save the world.

More will follow, thanks for watching guys! :)

edit2: perspective sucks LOL

Really nice and promising stuff, Marlon! The 'glasses' that the bird has on his head really rock! :scream::twisted: Also I like the fact you have children on the 'bird': you can give them some very nice and cute expressions! :)

Love the dragon and the kids, the background not quite so hot though. It would be cool if they were being chased by something big, hairy and mean...flying through the sky...wooo...From the one side I agree with this, but on the other side: the theme is 'journey' and not 'chase'... But still building in some very nasty hairy creature would be veery cool!

Have fun! I'll be following the progress! :)

Another concept :)

This takes place before the first concept. Goodbye is hard, but somebody has to save the world from ...(insert here the name of your most favorite evildoer)...
The city waves their heroes goodbye, will they ever return? The boy holds a loveletter in his hand from his beautiful young girlfriend, his sister waves to their father and mother... confident that they'll return savely.

Theresa, err what Dutchman says heh...
Ailsa, I would love to make a chase, but err what Duthman says... :D

I really like this sketch and good concept. Only crit is the overly horizontal composition of the bird- if its neck curved down maybe to get food from the guy in the background it would set off the composition better. Aside from that, very cool and I can really see this one having a lot of potential with your style. Go with this one!

Only crit is the overly horizontal composition of the bird- if its neck curved down maybe to get food from the guy in the background it would set off the composition better.

I kept it horizontal, because I took inspiration from dinosaurs. I can make the head bent down, but that would bring the head too close to the main character's head and leave a void in the sky. I can try different angles for the head and mouth tho making it less horizontal. Good call.

Thanks makaron!!

Therry, yeah, sorry for the lack of updates :)
My son contracted Pneumonia (think you call it that...), well almost, and he's feeling really bad all week. So, I didn't have time to do anything else, but to take care of my poor kid.
He's also doing a great job of keeping me awake at night...

It's good to see that people still care for my little contribution despite the lack of updates :)

Zycho, Nigio, thank you guys. Glad you like the sketch. I have a couple more in my head, hope to sketch them out soon.

Hey, Salamander, always nice to see you buddy! Ah yeah, I still don't know which one to choose...

A small update :)

I think I'll go with this concept... what do you guys think? It's not the most original LOL...
I'll do some concepts for the dragon next.
I gave the dragon some arms (and some ears too :) ), I think I'm pleased with the rough dragon concept I have now.
There will be a huge castle and cliffs behind the dragon with the sea in the background.

You should use him for ref for one of the boys on the pterodactyl, that would be great. :)

I really like you'r dragon design! however I think you'r latest concept doesn't have a strong enough silhouette versus the earlier ones. If you mark out his silhoutte in black you will notice the lack of shape, and missing arms/legs. Keep developing this further! I think it will be great. :)

*EDIT* might want to put down that horizon abit aswell?

Wow Marlon! This is fabulous! I love the perspective on the beastie, he's amazing, particularly in the way he's holding his hands. And the triumphant gestures of his riders is a nice touch too. Only thing that doesn't seem to fit is the flat on perspective of the castle. I cn't help but feel if that had even a teeny bit of 3d-ness to it, this image would be amazing. Other than that, no crits, just some encouragement to get going with the colour!

FlaminGlow, MDN67, oceanbluesky, thank you very much for the nice comments!

Zephyri, you're right. I've slightly added some perspective to the castle and background. That flat on perspective was my first intention, but I think it looks better this way. Thanks.

Theresa, I decided not to add a horizon. I want the castle and the rest of the pic surrounded by the sky. Hope this adds a bit to the mystery and strangeness of the landscape...

LOL, those pompoms look deadly!

I was inspired by this artbook I've bought recently :)
I decided to change the setting a bit making it more Oriental. I'll adjust the design of the characters too as I go along. Not that drastically though.

Blocked in some colors. Started work on the background. The dragon will be next. It'll be fun coming up with a colour scheme, probably inspired by the desert.

Theresa, my idea was to make the birds like seagulls flying alongside a sailship. Your idea is a cool one though... maybe I should give them little backpacks LOL.

I've put some more work into the castle and tried out a colorscheme for the dragonbeast. I'll work on the background some more (castle, clouds etc) and have that close to final as possible before I move to the characters and dragon. Saving the fun part for last :)

Thanks for watching!

hey marlon :)

youre really disciplined to do the backgorund first and not doing the fun part instead (like me eg^^).

maybe you should seperate the colorscheme of the beast and the background textures a bit. they are looking quite similar, maybe that would a bit of extra depth.

hope youre doing ok and will finish in time :)

update soon! :bounce:

Art2
05-10-2006, 10:44 AM
Yeah, Britta... I'm still thinking about that colourscheme.
I have decided the beast is from those parts (the desert/orient), but you are right.
I'll experiment some more.

I love the design of that building, so cool! It really does look oriental. You should put in some carvings around the doors and suchlike. I agree about the colour schemes, maybe a little too similar, but I love that colour, it's so marlon-like. Possibly make the beast a little more yellowish? Like he's weather beaten, but just had a bucket of water poured over him to make him more comfortable?

Hey, just an idea from your fangirl! Keep it going, marly!

Some more work on the castle.

Quills, thank you very much for the helpful comments! Cranked up the contrast/darker shadows, cos of the bright sun.

Laurent, yup added textures. Not too much thou, cos the building is at a considerable distance. Hope it looks better.

Theresa, I was thining the same thing. More yellow for the beast and very weather beaten. Oooh, I have cool ideas for the armour, heh...

I added some minor detail to the castle and completely repainted the rocks to the left. I wanted the rocks to look like they've been eroded by the wind over time, giving them a more rounded look. Still heavy whipping :D

Adonihs, thanks man, glad my work made you giggle. Dino's are cool :)

Hey Michael, thanks for the visit. I have to keep it coming, I have less than 2 weeks :)

Hi Marlon :)

I looove the colouring in this piece, so wonderfully softly done. The colour are great too - really hope you will get this one finished. Pray for me here in offline land *weeps*

i think that the rocks need a little darker colour to match the other elements of the background...

but i really like the picture as a whole...i really like that the charecters are not "in your face" in terms of the cmaera..but the thing they are riding is....very cool :)

keep at it...cant wait to see more...

Hey Ailsa, how're you doing girl. We miss you here in online land :) It's good to see you picking up your Journey.

Cyberone, thank you. I'll tweak the shadows once I'm happy with the entire background. I'd like to push the dome a bit more into the background aswell.

I've been adding some people, making it a bit more lively :)

Looking good Art2. Your draftsmanship is good. the pencils are great. Color and value wise your canvas is a little flat. Are you planning to add any depth? This reminds me of some of Mobieus's stuff. Good job so far. :)

Slav
05-13-2006, 09:38 PM
very nice image. i like the creature. but i guess if i could suggest anything is that you could make the background a little bit more intereting to the eye. it looks kind of flat atm. :)

paperclip

Maybe some clouds and/or distant mountains? I love the green banners by the way, very Marlonish!

Great updates....keep going! only something like 12 days left isn't it ? :argh:

Art2
05-14-2006, 09:17 AM
anticz, thanks for the helpful comments! You are right, I should add some more color variation. At this size I guess all the strokes are somewhat eliminated. I wanted to adjust the value and depth once I got all background elements in place. I still have to work on the sky.

Slav, many thanks for you comments. Yeah that flatness, I guess I have to get that value working. I haven't touched the sky yet, only did those sketchy clouds. Maybe I should put in more color too, more yellowish brown... seen that on many desert pics.

Hey 'soon to be a gold' Clippy :D! I thought about distant mountains and I think I have those in my concept sketches, but I wanted to have only some elements and lots of sky. The challenge will be, as Slav said, to make the background and sky interesting to the eye... :scream:
And the green/white is inspired by Arabian flags, like the Saudi. First thing that popped into my mind.
I don't know if you noticed, but the writing on the banners are of different style (still don't know bout that right writingstyle) . I want this castle to be a home for different cultures (something like medieval Jerusalem)... maybe I should make it more obvious LOL. If you look closely you can see different styles of soldiers, Arab and Western influences.

I'll try to finish the background and sky next and get that value and depth working :scream::scream:

I made some quick adjustments, trying to add more depth.
Sorry for the file size. It's a before and after pic.

Added some clouds and gave the crowd some color. I also added the moon, don't know if I'll keep it. I'll work a bit more on the sky next and try to find a final colorscheme for the dragonbeast.

I like the pinkish tone of the back building and I say keep the moon! You're coming along marvellously, the only thing that seems somehow wrong is the texture of the dragon. Maybe play around with that a bit more?

Art2
05-15-2006, 11:41 PM
hey Theresa, I haven't done any work yet on the beast, except for some flat colors.
And the colorscheme isn't final either. Hope I can finalize that colorconcept tomorrow, cos I can already see the deadline :D
Thanks Clippy, for your eternal support

Added some more detail to the castle and I did some quick flat coloring of the beast.
The beast is more like a dino/pterodactyle instead of the usual fantasy dragon. So no shiny scales, just leathery skin and desert camo. (I'm not saying that pterodactyles were scaleless, cos I don't know, LOL )

Theresa, you're right about the dome. I'll work on it some more in the final coloring stage. Thanks. As for being ahead of you... I have my own deadline, next wednesday I'm going on holidays. So I hope I can finish it in time :)

Hey Chups, thanks buddy!
Haha, I'm sorry that you hate the castle :) I want the design of the castle to be simple (maybe it's too simple). Just a simple desert sand castle. I'll add more detail in the final coloring stage though.

Dimi, glad to see you're still alive :D
Hmmm... maybe I should add your little dino pet and dwarf in my background somewhere... :D

It's coming along great, I love the texture on the head, it'd look cool if you used more of that pinkish beige colour in the body and particularly the claws. That beige complements the sky colour really well!

Also, the area immediately below the bird is rather empty, that tiny flock of birds ain't enough! I think you should put some more birds like the one above the ptero, but have them swooping a bit along with him, like dolphins beside a ship. :D

by the way nice try in creating an Arabic text ....

paperclip
05-21-2006, 12:56 PM
Woo! I love the fella on the left. The fella on the right is cool too, but I think you should give him cooler armor though. The perspective on his arm seems slightly off, but you could leave it the way it is, it's really not that bad at all. I really like that turban!

I also like the caption. :D

Art2
05-21-2006, 02:03 PM
saint-max, thank you. The Arabic text I used for the caption is some font I found on the web. Just some lil joke :D
The text you see on the banner is from my hand though. Hope it doesn't say anything I'll regret... probably not, cos I made those up :)

The fella on the right was at first a girl... maybe she still is...
She wears armour, chainmail sleeves. I haven't detailed it yet. Yup not that exiting:shrug:... anyway, I want her to be more Western instead of oriental.

More updates tonight.

Flat shaded the dragonbeast. I also added some belly armour (against those pesky archers :D )
Next, more work on the lighting and detailing of the beast and the heroes.
I'll take care of the birds when I go along.
I don't know if I'll add something in the open space in the middle under the beast. I think it'll disturb the comp. We'll see...

Two children from the Desert Palace, the young prince Salahidin and Stella, a young girl not from royal blood, were chosen to fly out with the dragon knight Abduhella to face the unknown thread from the South.
Their Journey begins hopeful and goes with lots of joy, because the Legend says that two children, one royalty and one common, will save the World one day on the back of a dragon Lord and they will bring home riches and peace.
Their joy will soon disappear, once they fly across the border to the South...
