03-01-2006, 02:50 PM
Very cool looking concepts, they give a great feel of the narrow passage. Can't wait to see more. :)
03-01-2006, 03:34 PM
Your concept sketch is very symmetrical... very intriguing. I'm looking forward to seeing how all of this turns out
03-01-2006, 04:31 PM
hi bryce! just a quick hello and welcome! :bounce::bounce::bounce:
your conceptsketch is already vivid in my mind :)
best of luck! yay!
03-01-2006, 06:39 PM
Here is another I wanted to do, hehe!
I want to try to do a bunch more with this, add some more chaos, sum drive by shootings, pimps and hoes, and just ganstaz everywhere. I want to kinda poke fun but at the same time illustration something that goes on in the hood of black America, sort of like Friday style. It is a journey for this young thug in the hood, The little boy I mean.
Right now I am just playing with the compo trying to figure out what will work in this one!:)
03-01-2006, 06:47 PM
Heheh, nice style on the second one  I'll surely be watching it developes :)
03-01-2006, 06:52 PM
lovt the feeling of this one..lil big daddy in the hod:thumbsup:
03-01-2006, 08:40 PM
I am trying to figure out the compo to this image, Extend the canvas or no?
03-01-2006, 08:44 PM
nice sktech so far, Bryce
03-01-2006, 08:53 PM
i dig the idea and its great that you are doing it a greyscale value sketch at first. i do think that you should widen the canvas and maybe make the canyon a bit wider.
keep us posted :) see you around
03-01-2006, 08:56 PM
I really like the dynamics of this composition :) Nice work!
ok...i'm already affraid...nice to see you here..good luck!!!
03-01-2006, 10:22 PM
Good sketches homez. I like the last one and it has a nice composition. Although, the whole look of it feels a bit too cliche, if you know what i mean. I'm not sure if about the guy pointing though. It gives too much info.
Other than that, i'm down with the composition. Looking good so far bro
03-02-2006, 02:13 AM
nice~a deep canyon journey
it looks pretty good compositionally:)
03-02-2006, 02:20 AM
It's good to see you in this one bryce Your last one was great.
03-02-2006, 04:14 AM
Here I am testing to see which colors convey the mood I want, which u guys?
03-02-2006, 04:24 AM
good luck ---(."v".)----
03-02-2006, 04:40 AM
i like the yellowy ones. at this early satge i will mention that i do not feel that i am very in touch with the chracters. all have bak toward me.. maybe you can bring a bit more emotion in the pic.... although that might be portrayed when you start painting.. . i think the compositio needs to widen possibly as well. or shift things around...
03-02-2006, 06:18 AM
I like the top two and the bottom one for readability. The red one is probably my favorite for mood. The green, brown, and blue are all too dark/saturated. More muted versions on those colors might be nice?
03-02-2006, 06:56 AM
Hi Beelow, well, I like the brown in the middle, but to to define the mood the characters should be more visible, you are going the good way, waiting to see more, good luck! :arteest:
03-02-2006, 07:25 AM
I like the concept for the boy in the hood :D could be fun to make it seriopus enough but still have the character in a funny mood :D about the first concept are u painting in the resolution ( 2657x3636)? u could extent it a little att the top to give more place for the castle about the colors i think blown and blue kind of theme ( night theme)
oi bryce! cool sketch  my favs are the yellows.. the first and last just work best for me :)
keep on climbing :D
while I like the concepts technically I must say that they rather feel like "the journey ends". It looks more like arriving than setting out.
Compositionwise: While the path to that castle/monastery/peak up there is winding and nice the main diagonal created by the rock to the left is much too overwhelming and is also taken up directly by the upper part of the path so that the nice and slow tempo of the winding path is actually replaced by that quick and straight diagonal.
Maybe you could move that rock to the left? So the viewer could slowly follow that winding path again? I think that would balance the composition.
Just my thoughts. :)
03-02-2006, 05:10 PM
I dig the first one and the last one. I would still play around with the composition man. It just feels a bit similar with your spectacular entry in terms of where you're leading the viewers eyes.
checking back again. Colour choice is looking really good though.
take the blue one of those, feels most natural
Go with the dark brown because it's daring!
03-02-2006, 10:21 PM
Sergey Banityuk- Glad to see u here buddy, yeah it is, Still trying to play with stuff to see what will work with this theme and what is gonna win me this contest hehe!
sergioKomic-Yeha I will, feels like u cracking a whip across my back, I feel like a slave now, hehe!:p
the1st_angel- Hey thanx bud!
urgaffel- Glad u liked the Spectacular, Hope I make better color choices this time around!
mmbenya- thanx bud, that is kinda what I am going for, lets make this path difficult for these individuals, but still adventurous!
dunkelgold-Thanx benita, glad to see u in here, best of luck to u!
MikeTheHunter- thanx dude, I might just do both of them compare the 2 and go with the one that everyone seems to like!
nebz- thanx man I really like the Idea of the second one, I think I will a more fun with that one!
schaal- Hey, thanx for droppin by!
Llynna-Thanx Llynna, yeah I think I like it better that way! I am going to arbitrarly work on both of these to see what will work best in the end , for this theme!
enialadam- thanx, still gonna play with it a bit more!
OrO- Oh, I am not that scary, hehe! I do have critters in on the top my head though, but they are gentle, hehe! Good to see u back! Make it a learning experience Oro!
Arc80- thanx, my nub! Yeah I am going to add more poeple still thinking of the good gesture poses I can do so I can tie in the compo! What u mean by clinche though?
sh@ke- Thanx, shake! yeah gonna have to fix a bit!
wildcory1- Thanx buddy, yeah I'm back and still black, hehe!
beelow- What a bunch of crap dude, you need to work on everything u suck, LOL!
createmai- U know what I was kinda feeling that one too, but still to dark! I am afraid of the dark, LOL!
W!L- Yeah I think that I am gonna eliminate the dark ones, the lighter ones feel a little bit more promising. Yeah I am still trying to figure things out, I add the left after the fact. I like it that addition but I have to a little problem solving. Yeah I hear that about the characters; I feel the same way about them. I think more characters will solve this, how I will place them, I am still unsure about. Thanx, bud I am taking ur advice highly in to account!
wildsheepchase- Cool dude, Yeah more muted colors of the dark and saturated one could work, good advice!
Climax-Thanx dude! Nice to see u have dropped by, I will end up adding more character as I said previously! Thanx!
Agamemnwn- No it is still fairly small, so I won't have to bother with going back in steps so I paint in the beginning at small res, then go up when I get to the detail! Thanx that is a fine point made about the castle whachamajig, I will consider those choice of color as well, hehe, yellow more readable, better moods with the darks, so I guess no green. Hehe!
Vahn- Thanx, Vahn, I am considering those colors maybe a mixture, I may end up working with compliments or spit?
Mr. Mu- Yeah that seems to distract the compo I see what ur saying! I will move those rocks to the left, more. Thanx bud!
Arc80-Thanx dude, U are making some valid points as far as the compo goes. I don't necessarily agree that the compo is the same as my Spectacular, Now I have to go compare now, damn! Hehe!
Ranath- thanx bud, I am thinking that I may go for that one, not sure, getting a lot of different opinions though hehe, so this is gonna be tough!
JTD-Hahaha! Yeah me doing this image is daring, but I am glad that u like the brown
Don't know gang seems to split decision every which a way! Lets see what I do next, decisions, decisions???
03-02-2006, 10:27 PM
Hey Bryce, I like the third and fifth color schemes you have for the image the best. I think both have a cinematic quality to them. The first and last ones might be too bright and detract from the atmosphere that you are building. Looking forward to seeing more. :buttrock:
03-02-2006, 10:35 PM
a voting and I missed that!.. I like the first one best... kind of sunriceshade...
beelow- What a bunch of crap dude, you need to work on everything u suck, LOL!
03-02-2006, 11:52 PM
I like no. 1 and also the blue one. I think you should go for a few colors ...colorscheme...though and not make it too monotone, y'know?
Keep it up! I see no fro though.
03-03-2006, 12:50 AM
Just droppin in to say hi man and goodluck with the challenge. Feelin excited myself :P Here we go again :) I'll leave some comments on your work later ~peace.
03-03-2006, 06:28 AM
Goodmorning Bryce. Already namned the castle i see :D cant wait to se more of this :D
03-03-2006, 08:41 AM
Ok you proved that you are funny now show some art skills....
($h!t the same applies to me to:scream: )
03-03-2006, 09:07 AM
Hey Bryce !
Nice sketches , I like the last concept the most ... some yellow color mood seem really cool with ... feel like an old photo you know ? ...
Keep it up mate !!
03-03-2006, 12:53 PM
Go with the yellow... Has most atmosphere I think...
Really good work so far!!
03-03-2006, 03:44 PM
Hey Bryce, friend! Enjoy it, good luck in next challange
03-03-2006, 05:42 PM
maybe a cold warm mix works fine too, so the light gets weight and more blueish shadows add contrast.Golden light works great for the piece.
03-03-2006, 08:50 PM
nice sketches...and colour variationd...i love the one on top...the colours are yellowish but really mystic. keep up the good work..
oh...i got here late im so sorry... good luck mate and have tons of fun! cheers!:D
03-04-2006, 09:44 AM
I am trying to figure out the compo to this image, Extend the canvas or no?
From all variants of a composition this while the best
03-04-2006, 09:56 AM
Morning Bryce :D Just checking in!
I say no, don't extend the canvas and the top colour choice (golden) it's looking great so far, good progress! Will check back soon :D
hey beelow nice going buddy.
I like the yellow one!
Maybe you should flip the canvas and see how you like it.
03-04-2006, 03:33 PM
Hey Bryce, your composition is looking really good :) I also enjoyed your color comps...you might try combining a couple, such as muted warm tones in the foreground and, as the elivation ascends, cool blue mystical tones.
Someone mentioned earlier in the thread that they don't feel attached to the characters because their backs are facing us. Just for consideration, you might have two main characters in the foreground: something like one starting to turning away from the daunting challenge and the other grabbing his shoulder or sleeve with the expression stating "Hey this is your idea, there's no backing out now!"
In any case, awesome work thus far!
03-04-2006, 09:24 PM
mmbenya-Thanx Matt, considered most definitely!
makaron- thanx mona! Don't worry u haven't missed anything!:D
Mr. Mu- U like that huh?:D
paperclip-Thanx theresa! Yeah that is intintionally what I am going to do, more colors of course. I just want to see how people respond to the monotones ones, what colors seem to interest people more for the paticular mood that I want to set for this painting!:wise:
ahbeejieh- thanx for dropping by!
Agamemnwn- Yeah I did, I am going to rename it castletingamabob, hehe!
sergioKomic- Haha! I am far less artistic than what people think hehe!:D
Zapan- thanx, for dropping by steph, good luck with ur entry!
Zycho- thanx bud!
rawwad- thanx, rawwad, good luck to u as well!
the1st_angel- thanx, I may have to do a few color comps hehe, thanx buddy!
calisto- Oh it isn't too late, don't worry it is only the first week!
Sergey Banityuk- Hehe, thanx! Seem my grey scale ones are always the best!
Elsie- Ok, Yeah, I like the old and the new the both seem to work really well, from what I see, well see what i do!
Art2- Yeah I do that plenty, I will submit a few of those maybe hehe!
danielh68- Thanx that is a great Idea! Will do that for sure!
Ok it is set now after I got so many replys from these It surprises me how many of u responded, u guys are great thanx on to the next step!
03-04-2006, 09:37 PM
Hi Bryce, all your color comp looks very good. I prefer the last one, maybe looks with more light and the characters can stand out better than the other compositions....anyway great work.
03-04-2006, 09:40 PM
Looking good. I like the tones of the last one. If they were combined with an increasingly bluey tone for depth I think that would work.
03-04-2006, 11:55 PM
I most liked the last one. There's a great mood in that. Looking forward to see it's progress:thumbsup:
Hey Beelow! The 3rd browny looking colour and the blue one, I think!
Just my opinion, the blue looks like the day is coming into night.
you go man... comming allong nice keep the wips comming!
03-05-2006, 10:39 AM
Yup, it's comming along nicely, dude. To add some mixup to your head that is already mixed up by tons of great advices, I say - I like the bluish tone, kinda night shot. Will be watching it progress.
03-05-2006, 04:34 PM
hiya...just cheking out...dont extend it! the composition is beautiful and clear. cant wait to see you start working on the details! cheeers!:D
03-07-2006, 12:26 AM
A lot of great enties turning up keep it coming gang, sorry been short on the updates. I will try to get some updates throughout the week been busy with trying to get my reel cut and trying to get out of school. It has been hectic as of late. But, Thanx for the support gang! I will arbitrarily be working out the 2 concepts here!
snowan- Thanx, man Really appreciatiated!
BaronImpossible-Thanx, Baron and welcome back to the contest!
Velarion-Alright that is another guy who like the last one!
jsn-Thanx, I can agree that the blue is nice, that is starting to become very popular!
MikeTheHunter- Another that likes the blue! Thanx Mike!
calisto-U talking bout the last update right, or do like the up and down(portrait)? Thanx for dropping by!
03-07-2006, 02:49 AM
Another master at work. Love your style.
03-07-2006, 04:14 AM
Here is the boy in the ghetto concept. I am still playing with the compo still with this, not liking it yet! crits always welcome!
I still realy like the idea with the perspective on the mountain area!
Lovely what you've done with it so far, especialy the perspective!
The 'hood'-concept is pretty good also! I like this very much!
What's going on in Black America? Is this also a color thing? Would be fun tho making the whole street red and the little fella with some blue colors on him! hahaha!
Doing some good coloring on that, the piece will look outstanding!
either way, keep up the good work!
03-07-2006, 07:20 AM
eew don't add to the stereotype :D we're not all from the ghetto.
joke, nice work so far bro, don't center that kid, move him to the left or right a bit.
03-07-2006, 10:35 PM
Hey Bryce, cool looking concept! I'm not sure if you're intending for the this or not but the drive by going on behind the main character looks like they are shooting him in the head. My only suggestion would be to maybe add an auto to the right foreground coming into the scene; it might help to frame the image.
03-08-2006, 04:50 AM
dash2k4- I am no master dude, but thanks. ur comment makes me smile!
MichaelMotion- Thanx dude! Yeah I am still playing around with them a bit, but I gotta tend to my demo reel for now, hehe! Gotta have that ready by next week!
NOOB!- Haha! I got to do it, hehe!:D Yeah But I am!:D That is the main thing I am not liking that he is centered, thanx NOOB! Yeah I may keep it as so, because the theme of this one kinda calls for it, but it still is too boring for my taste.
mmbenya- Yeah thanx dude! I was thinking of putting extra people playing ball, maybe a great great great grandma some where, So I am still juggling with a bit! Thanx, give me something else to consider if all fails!

Here, is the latest on the other entry, starting to decide on the placement of more characters and trying to move warm colors in the foreground, till finetuning it as I go along, Yeah I went for the night theme I may go ahead and do a day scene I if I have the time, well it is set thanx again for the amazing amount of responses for this image, good luck all, crits always welcome!
03-08-2006, 06:17 AM
wow dude!the compos and lighting are very cool.:bounce: can't wait for more.cheers.:buttrock:
03-08-2006, 07:32 AM
Great composition! I love the lighting, can't wait to see this progress
man, I am actually quite an admirer of your work and while that concept received such an overwhelming response due to the fact that it has got a lot of potential I feel I would still like to see work on its composition before you go ahead and color it.
It is a bit of an awkward situation as I basically suck compared to you :D, but anyway...:
- the focal point is a bit unclear to my mind. If it is the peak/building it is a bit too far on the right side isn't it?
- the rule of thirds rather suggests the couple on the ledge, which would create a wonderful relationship to the target of those people's journey (lost in contemplation somehow). In that case, however, the abundance of characters in the foreground distracts too much from them.
- If on the other hand the guy with the raised arm is the main character and focal point I would like to see that rock removed from above his head as he feels sort of crammed into.
Actually, I am just trying to figure out why this compo is still making me feel uncomfortable as I type, so more experienced viewers (including you, hehe) might have figured out more clearly.
Still watching eagerly, even if I don't post too much. Whatever you do, it will end up among my favourite entries for sure - just like the last time, so just keep going!
i just have a quick suggestion, right now there is very little going on on the left side of your image why not move the mountian there. add some winding roads... if you render anything in the far distance you end up getting horizontal lines anyways ... to mimic that would help you illustrate the illution of great distance. good referance would be air plane shots... welp that's my suggestion :) image looks great everywhere else though. keep it up.
03-08-2006, 05:26 PM
Oh, that's spooky :) Keep it up :))
BTW - it'd be good to show ome more of the people down there :)
nice idea, maybe use more dark greens in there too to give the color pallette more depth. The castle is too vertical I think, if you make it more clearly 3-point perspective, it might come off more dynamic and interesting.
03-09-2006, 08:09 AM
Hey, going great Bryce  the journey through the ghetto had me giggling, very nicely done. The latest development on the other theme is looking very cool too - already I can feel the atmosphere!
03-09-2006, 01:48 PM
I have to agree with Mr. Mu - he's right about all he pointed out, especially the vanishing point :) And I'm glad you listened to us - "blue colour likers" Keep it up!
03-09-2006, 04:33 PM
I really like the mood in this comp a lot, beelow!
It's sort of hard to read the main characters, though, with them being dark on a dark background. Maybe you could roll some fog in to put them on a lighter background... or make them lighter? or use a warm/cool contrast and give them bright orange jumpsuits? :) Anyhow, something to make them pop more.
03-09-2006, 08:25 PM
i liked the yellow one...but this one turned out even better! looks great mate! cheers!:D
03-09-2006, 10:15 PM
Hi dude!! Already on work!! Excellent, like the 2 concepts, perhaps more the first one with the mountains, anyway good work on two... :wip:
looking for update keep posting!!
03-10-2006, 12:07 PM
I like the way you have made use out of the clouds in the last one! :) It sure does tell the story of a journey but maybe not the beginning.. Those towers looks like the end of the journey right now i think..? :/ Later..
03-11-2006, 03:07 PM
Good to see your epic fisheyed perspective Bryce - I'm sure it will be well-suited to the task ahead. hope its all good.
Interesting concept, looking forward to see your worlk!:)
03-12-2006, 03:27 PM
Looking good, though a bit monochrome. You could try expanding on the foreground colours maybe - not too much, just enough to add depth but still retain the cold, mountainous feel.
03-14-2006, 04:36 AM
Sorry gang, I have been away trying to cut my reel, it is crap though, hehe! Gotta make that better. I will show it to u guys upon request. that way I can recieve good crits to get it to where it needs to be. Hot Job On The Lighting So Far....keep It Up And Keep It Real
03-15-2006, 04:20 PM
I need colours mannnn!:scream:
i like the mood & colors ...it conveys a really good atmosphere
I like walrus' Idea with the orange jackets/jumpsuits ..would make a nice contrast to elevate the characters :)
rock on beelow :applause:
03-16-2006, 02:14 PM
Cool! I like your canyone image best, the compositon, the tight color scheme, scope for lots of rich textural detail later...
The actions of the figures should probably be made clearer, even taking into account that they are very rough stick-figures at this stage... what are those 2 doing, that seem to be holding hands? One helping the other along the path? If so, the 'helpee' should be kneeling, or in a more unbalanced or precarious positin, than the 'helper'. (The pointing guy is clear enough)
03-16-2006, 03:16 PM
Very promising this. My eye is drawn maybe to much to the right. I would move everything over to the left more. The colours are nice though. I like the moody night setting and the way the castle is nestled in the clouds. I would give the character to the left a lantern or torch. The warm light would add depth to the painting and draw our eyes to the character.
03-16-2006, 10:28 PM
I still am undecided about the comp, I think colors are final, still wondering bout the place ment of characters, Let me know whats up! holla!
Here are a couple of pieces!
03-16-2006, 10:29 PM
03-16-2006, 10:37 PM
tarrzan- Thanx, tarrzan! Yeah, I'm chillin', but yeah, tryin' to do tha damn thang right now!
THE CLYKE-Oh, yeah fa sho!
sergioKomic-U got it! Hehe! LOL, I'll get on that one 2!
Vahn-Yeah, I wanted to bring the attention to the characters with the lighting, thanx Vahn!
Stahlberg-Yeah, I know, I suck at speed painting though, hehe! Will work on that, thanx for dropping by Steven. I am surprised to see u in my thread!!!
domclubb- Done, thanx dude!:D
03-17-2006, 05:49 AM
Here is another update!!! Let me know what u think!;)
03-17-2006, 06:01 AM
i preferred this comp
because the man seems to talk to the watcher and from the actual Point of view, the man speaks to something as tall as a frog, but thats just what my tired eyes tell me at the moment. the wide angle anyways is very cool, looking forward to your nextupdate and go squeeze my pillow for now :p
03-17-2006, 09:51 AM
the compo and atomoshphere looks awesome mate!! very mysterious for me ,little bit scary haha, keep it up and cheers :bounce:
03-17-2006, 10:59 AM
really like your fish eye lense effect.
will be watching man....
03-17-2006, 11:02 AM
There is a great sense of scale in the most recent one. I agree with the1stangel though, the guy looks like he's looking at a tiny animal...Looking forward to where this goes!
03-17-2006, 11:34 AM
beautifull atmosphere i love the way you opposed colours!! great work mate!!:D
03-17-2006, 02:12 PM
I like this composition the best. I like the mix of colors as well. The foreground character is a nice lead in to the piece.
03-17-2006, 03:33 PM
the1st_angel- LOL, get some sleep dude! hahaha! It's funny that u said that, hmmm well see what I do next, I like both and yes that is the major problem with the latest one, Hmm I wonder how I can fix it?
Michael Chang- Yeah, creepy and mysterious is what I am intending, for this piece, I think this may be successful!
Neubius-Thanx! I am still contemplating on it though, I may end up doing the other, still not sure though.
yAdam-Hmmm, u know what, I think I may add some children and a couple of dogs!
calisto- That, homegirl! It was kinda difficult at first, but using Paul Davidson's Master and Servant entry help a bit to get what I was going for! Thanks Paul!
jcrawfor_us-Yeah, at first I was not even thinking of it, then I decided to do it, I wanted to include the viewer into the painting! Thanx bud!
03-17-2006, 03:42 PM
The last one is definitely the best! What an improvement in just a couple days... colors are great, compositon too. I don't really get the feeling I'm a small animal from this one, more like I'm on a ledge, below or crawling on all fours, or both.
03-17-2006, 04:06 PM
I must agree with the1st_angel about how the pic could be read, but the latest updated pic is the most interesting by its dynamic and composition. So instead of reading the story as if u r some little fellow back there, u could even improve the dramatic feeling by adding some stairs on the lower part of the pic. Thats how the viewer will have the feeling of climbing up to something greater, the man infront is calling him up to hurry up and the problem is solwed with some minor changes :) just my opinion. keep up with great work buddy! u r doing very fine!
03-17-2006, 04:31 PM
Wow great compositions i also prefer the last one with the nice mixed colors.
kind of mono crome i think... but still rocks hard :D
03-17-2006, 06:21 PM
Great doode ! i love your painting ! u have skill doode :D keep it this way !
Good luck ! I'll keep an eye on ya !:scream:
03-17-2006, 06:52 PM
Great composition, mate! Just be aware of anatomy of the nearest figure, could get off a bit..
I don't know, maybe i'm wrong.
Can't wait to see how it's gonna turn.
Best regards and big respect

03-17-2006, 08:47 PM
Nice idea friend! I love colors atmosphere and backround a lot, composition is very good too. keep working :D
03-17-2006, 09:34 PM
I like the last one :) I feel like a small creature looking up. and thinking, wait for me, I´m running as fast as I can! I don´t wanna miss this journey... and for the challenge theme, thats perfect...
03-17-2006, 09:47 PM
Nice sketches. The last one is quite dramatic. A few things, though ~ watch you don't exaggerate the perspective too much in the foreground, else it will look distorted. Also, the transition from warm to cold colours is quite sharp. If you graduate this, and perhaps link foreground to background more (by means of a path, or steps maybe) then this would improve the feeling of depth.
03-18-2006, 01:33 AM
Stahlberg-Thanx Steven! I am gonna play with it a bit before I start to cut in my detail!
NinjaASSN-Thanx! that is a great idea lets see, what I can do!
FlaminGlow- Yeah I may end up going back to that one, we'll see!
Slav- My ass, LOL! Thanx for the support bud!:D
-KiD-- Thanx dude! glad to see u drop by!
Chupacabra- Thanx for dropping by, I will make some changes in the anatomy! Let me know what is bothering u next time around, I will have a clearer vision of what is going on wrong!
thanx for dropping by!:D
rawwad-Thanx for dropping by Tibor!
makaron-Thanx Mona! I am going to change it a bit to see how everyone like that one!
BaronImpossible- Thanx dude, U give the greatest of tips, most definitely will pay attention those that u have mention!
03-18-2006, 01:43 AM
Impressive pic so far Bryce :)
Nice camera angle and colours.
Are the guys further down the path the right scale?? They seem rather tall compared to the wall next to them. Maybe some depth of field could help the illusion though.
Maybe tilt the lantern of the guy on the right, he's moving forward so inertia would make it tilt towards the viewer.
Waiting for more updates :D
03-18-2006, 03:35 AM
here is the up and down compo, I think I like it now, what do u guys think up and down, or left and right?
03-18-2006, 03:41 AM
very nice man its coming along well
03-18-2006, 06:24 AM
yeah... me like...
when I start look at it, my eyes follows from left upper "the light" and down to the right and then into the middle... and the people are in that "line"... and I still get that feeling.. wait for me! :bounce:
03-18-2006, 03:26 PM
Hey, I really like this composition the best so far.
03-18-2006, 05:24 PM
Yeah, much better, but i would take off an inch below your page and add an inch on the top. Your horizon line is centered.
Question, are you using warp perspective?
be back again bro. The colours i dig a lot
03-18-2006, 06:08 PM
I like post 158 but as the guy above (arc80) said, the horizon seems too centred- I would lower it and see the people from a lower perspective, with the mountain looming up behind them.
Bryce! This is one giant leap for your painting. I admit I missed the previous updates and therefore was completely blown away by this last update.
I don't think it's bad that the viewer seems to be on a lower level. Makes the journey so much more epic (reaching a higher ground, stuff like that).
03-18-2006, 07:19 PM
3dRaven-Done! I've made them thanx dude!
Wayne jermaine-Thanx dude! glad u dropped by!
makaron- I can't wait for u, haha! I gotta keep on pushin'! yeah thanx, I wanted to include the viewer into the painting, which will bring this world to life, it will depend also on how well I paint as well!!
mybutterflyiris- Thanx, still working on it! I am almost happy with it!
Arc80-Yeah, lets try that, yeah somewhat, but more of three point! past the horizonline points it seems to warp, so I will have to fix that, I don't know if the warp would have a better feel! But thanx, for the input!
paperclip-Thanx, theresa, I will fix that! No afro this time!:D
Mr. Mu- Well, with the amount of feedback that I recieved, I found something a little more comfortable to paint on! Thanx for ur insight, they really helped! I am almost ready to detail work, soon that is!
03-18-2006, 11:09 PM
Here is an update made some changes here and there! I will continue with making minor changes!Thanx!
There's two areas I am already absolutely in love with:
- the steps in the foreground. Exquisite lighting on those. Also my view always returns to them as if I'd like to enter the painting. Just cool.
- this absolutely out-of-reach high up in the clouds goal/aim/target of the journey. Makes it all almost spiritual, but not too straight forward.
You notice I feel totally different about the whole approach with this version...:scream:
suggestion: the pose of the beckoning character's lantern arm looks...well not unnatural, because it is possible to hold a lantern like this, but... somehow unpleasing. Too many square angles maybe...
03-19-2006, 04:29 AM
Hey bee. The expedition concept's really working for you man. Dont got nothin' to crit that's why I havent been posting. It was great to watch your progress though, I cant wait for the amazing details that you're gonna put on these dudes. Keep it up man. The fish eye view's interesting too. I dont know how to do that yet :) ~peace!
03-19-2006, 05:50 AM
the mood in this one is getting better and better... :applause:
is that me in the left corner?... about to catch up! ha ha
03-19-2006, 12:58 PM
Reallly sweet work. The concept is a lot better that the previous one. And I gotta agree with Mr.Mu on the arm thing, it looks awkward. I really like the direction it goes into.
03-19-2006, 05:37 PM
Really strong composition, Beelow. I like that concave-parting-the-red-sea type of layout you have.
A couple of suggestions you might consider:
1. The left character is cropped off at a tangent. Perhaps move him to the right some or extend the canvass to the left.
2. I'm aware you have a long ways to go, but make sure you change the arm holding the lantern to a three quarter view as oppose to the flat orthogonal view.
In any case, amazing work thus far!
03-19-2006, 07:45 PM
very interesting perspective and use of warm/cool color contrast. also like the main character... nice job.
03-20-2006, 10:11 AM
Hi mate, Your composition and color tone is interesting. Good job :)
03-20-2006, 01:18 PM
Yeah, the composition is much better. I say stick with straight lines so you dont have to warp your characters as well.
Oh and about the character on the left side, personally, i would move him a bit forward, make him ahead of the character on the right side so you can get that nice receading size between all of your characters to help the distancing. Just a suggestion :argh:
peace out bro, be back
03-20-2006, 02:42 PM
It's looking good. Don't forget about the transition between foreground and distance. You've got a couple of problems - firstly, the grey section in the foreground; because it's a similar colour to the background, it confuses the eye. Second, the steps don't look good being horizontal, I'd suggest making them curve (i.e. the arc of a circle).
03-20-2006, 04:35 PM
You are doing realy good Bro....
03-20-2006, 07:59 PM
Mr. Mu- thanx dude, I will get to fixing the arm, I am going to have to take some reference shots for the guys in the front!
ahbeejieh- Thanx dude glad u dropped by good luck with ur entry, I will be dropping by from time to time!
makaron- thanx mona, no silly that is not u, hehe, that is a guy, that is what i am going to make him!:p
MikeTheHunter-aight will do dude, I am not far in the painting with the figures, thanx mate!
danielh68- Thanx for those suggestions dude, I will make those changes!
jevinart- Thanx, I am comfortable with my color palette. Now I just solve things now!
ppook- Thanx, that is what I wanted to focus on first getting the compo down then my color pallete, It seems to work!
Arc80- Yeah, I am thinking of doing that, I am still debating on stuff though, so I will see what works!
BaronImpossible- Thanx, let see what I do first, If so I will make these changes to suit this compo well! U havee been a big factor in the success of this piece!
sergioKomic- Thanx dude, I know, I know, we gotta get back to the collab battle, I am graduating finally! Yipee!!!:D
03-21-2006, 03:33 AM
Here is another update based on some of the suggestions. I still have to make the arm adjustment and fix the guy all the way to the left! But, at least there is more of that guy, I maty eventually make him larger in scale, a tad more than the other guy. Moving him I may have issues with those steps reading as steps, well here it is!
i prefer the 1st update... i think the forced perspective or bird's eye is a bit too much. i think the image warping and the bird eye is too distracting.
03-21-2006, 08:25 AM
hi bryce ,
havent forgoten u . just been busy . i looked everything i miss since now and all i can say is you are making great progress on each update . i love the colors u finally chose and the final composition and the circular motion for the comp goes to the payback on the castle :D great job
03-21-2006, 10:27 AM
sergioKomic- Thanx dude, I know, I know, we gotta get back to the collab battle, I am graduating finally! Yipee!!!:D
tsOk man 'm Witcha!:scream:
(howd did I go, Will I make a record deal speaking like at?)
03-21-2006, 11:06 AM
i love the perspective in this. The low camera really makes the background mountain seem really tall. The colours are nice but i don't understand why the ground in front of the characters is blue when the rest of the foreground is reddish. I'd change it to a warmer tone. I'd also light the first step as i dont think it should be in shadow. It looks like a cut away "slit" instead of a protruding step. Other than that. it's excellent
03-21-2006, 06:53 PM
KEEP THE WOOD WORK!! GOOD LUCK TO YOU TOO!!!
03-21-2006, 07:19 PM
Slav- I am gonna go ahead and lessen the warp up, I can see ur point. I also think the blue is a little much as well! Thanx slav!
Agamemnwn- Thanx a bunch, I still have to solve some stuff, hopefully I get it together soon, thanx again. don't worry I ain't trippin', hehe!:D
sergioKomic- Hmmm..... U gotta practice some more hehe!:D We'll work on that, getting u a record deal I mean!
domclubb-Thanx ur points are valid! I will definitely make the change in colors in the forground!
As for the step I don't want to overdo the lighting because I can easily take focus away from the main character, which I do not want to do, I will light it some though that is if I am understanding u correctly.... Oh I may think I know what ur talking about I will paint in some light there, don't worry bout that, I will reflect some of that light back down on to the steps! Thanx again!
subtle warp would prolly work ... maybe add some degree or something that will help lead the eye through your image. i think so far the concept is progressing VERY well... i cant wait to see you start putting more of a pallet to your work.
03-22-2006, 02:16 AM
oneka-Thanx dude! Glad u stopped by!
Slav- Yeah, thanx, I am baking the cake right now, then the icing will come! Thanx again, bud!
You're crits have been helpful!
03-22-2006, 07:34 AM
Here's a quick paintover, hope you're okay with that, if not let me know and I'll take it down.
comments: I think the central symmetrical composition isn't working, I tried shifting it over to one side, cropping a bit, and I think that's better. I think you can even make the guy on the left a lot smaller/further ahead. You're loosing track of your center of interest in such a wide cropping, with a lot of stuff especially at the bottom which isn't doing much for the feeling.
The guy's pose, the legs were spread too wide, like he's running... also the lighting on the legs was off a bit. (But maybe you're planning to take reference photos later, when you've nailed the concepts)
The cliffs on the sides, I think the perspective was too forced.
I think that's it. As I mentioned before I like the color scheme, and the idea is cool it makes me want to jump in the picture and go exploring. :)
03-22-2006, 02:35 PM
Looks good! False perspective is the good way to express feeling of great landscape but I think, the ladder is too curve and doesn't support the mountain perspective.
good luck mate!
03-22-2006, 07:37 PM
Stahlberg- No, prob! I am glad that u did the paint-over! I initially did that, and think that I was starting to overdo it, I may go ahead and include the steps, and back lighting as if the veiwer were holding a lantern as well. But I think ur right as it is not really doing anything for the compo. I wanted to include some glyps or something that will gauge the viewer's interest with the steps, but I am not sure if I want to go that route, what do u think? Also, one of my buddies mentioned that I could go ahead and put some decease bodies or of dead animals, creatures to give the painting even more interest, guess that I am overthinking it. Thanx Stahlberg!
FIDUCIOSE- Hey FID, thanx for dropping by! Yeah, I did not like that, I will change that, and I will get rid of the warp, it is really destroying the painting, Argh!:argh: :D
03-22-2006, 08:34 PM
That's a difficult perspective to pull off my friend, as it looks like something done for a pan shot....but I know that once you get it down, it will look really exciting. I'll be keeping an eye on this. Good Luck!
03-24-2006, 07:55 PM
Thanx, Patrick, yeah hopefully I will have something solved soon, thanx for dropping by!
03-26-2006, 09:03 PM
Felt like I should post an update not much done right now. thanx for the continued support, peace!
03-26-2006, 09:19 PM
The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers! And you will know my name is / I am the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon you!
sum tuff dude before doin his job.
I would like to see you have harder contrasts in the foreground to have the room for giving light the possebilety to take effect. as the valey of darkness is a dirty, cold and fogy place, blue and cyan reflexes fom behind the cam would add a nice contrast and help the atmoshpere and a golden light on the horizon wich is the promise of redemption.
after our little talk i man, the tisted way of it would also be cute, a dark messiah on the end of the row castin doomlights into the sky, a new version of the colorfall off away from the cam offers, but in both cases, i sugest to give the set a daker apearance and work with attenuated light, to give the scene some focal points. keep upt the great work mate, go go go!
03-27-2006, 12:56 AM
I like ur composition, btw, but the skies perspective angle little bit too exagerrated
but well done with the colors,. cant wait for the updates
03-27-2006, 05:15 PM
Hi Bryce! Sorry for getting in here so late... and incidentally for nto getting back to your note, I've been offline at home for a good three months, and so have missed the start of this challenge, so trying to make up ground! My first thoughts when looking at the image were WOW.. that would have been amazng for the spectacular contest, but it works just as well here. Love the dramatic perspective. Obviously you're only in the first few stages of colour right now, so still lots to do.. but it'd be really nice to see more of the strong light coming from the lamps, as Stahlberg did in his paintover, it really made the darkness of the figures pop and give them life. Also, I noticed, only becasue I do this so much myself when doing clouds, the lines of your clouds follow the lines of the canyon very closely... maybe breaking them up a bit might give a bit more visual interest to the top of the pic, perhaps they could be spiralling in towards the mountain?
But other than that, great job on the atmospheric hazing and depth of the pic, everything reads nicely. Can't wait to see more!

Hey dude!good luck with your job! =)About this, I watch that the guy´s head on the right "touches" with the narrow pass of the background and this fact maybe play down depth.
Anyway, I´ll watch to your progress!

I knew I would find you in this callenge aswell.
Your expeditiontheme is really interesting. Very creapy, hate caves!
Haven´t checked out the whole thread yet (you´re a popular dude) so I don´t know what comp is final but I prefer the wider ones where the closest guy is cropped waist down.
Will enjoy the progress. Have fun!
I like what ya did with the redish glow in the front of your image Bryce!
Will the background stay this greyish color?. Realy like this colorsceme..
03-30-2006, 01:42 PM
hey Bryce, there's a real sense of intense curiousity about what's going on in the horizon. It looks like the hikers in the picture already know what it is, so the guy to the right is teasing the viewer like this: "You really want to know what that is? Follow me, follow me. You are in for a big surprise!"
Go on with your next update! :) I want to know!

I don't want to grow tired of this painting and I am gonna go ahead and finilize this, thanx for the paintovers, Stahlberg, Sacha and Fidicouse!

anzibon- Oh Sacha is the homie, if u get to know, don't get jealous my nub, Speak to him, he has great tips!:wise:
Norberg- Sup mate! I initially wanted to go with the compo being that way, as I wanted to show scale, which is hard to work in a landscape. I wanted show the adventure being menacing! That is why I went with the up and down! Thanx for ur input dude, Hope to see u drop by again!
MichaelMotion- Hey thanx, Micheal! Yeah I am gonna try to add more reds in the new compo, just had to figure my compo!

03-31-2006, 06:35 AM
Nice, Bryce. Like the color shift, you may want to carry the path on the left up a bit and the then have the crossover with the guy on it a bit higher. I’m losing him between the to larger figures. Sorry for the rhyme btw.
03-31-2006, 07:16 AM
Here is another update! Made the change thanx Cliff!
03-31-2006, 07:39 AM
Feelin' the atmosphere already! Keep it cool!
03-31-2006, 08:08 AM
great! works fine and now grants a minimized risk to pass the bridges :) the lifeinsurance is happy again ;)
03-31-2006, 08:57 AM
o yeah! the composition is way better than before and the upward path and gesture of the front character really leads the eye to the journey up ahead. Good work, keep going Bryce!
03-31-2006, 11:57 AM
hey this is much better....before i couldnt really follow what was happening as much...now its much better :)
with the guy you might want to look at how he is holding the lamp...if i was him so high up there i would be wanting to hold on a little tighter than that....lol
but again its still early days...
keep it up :)
03-31-2006, 12:55 PM
this is more like it. A very clear composition now. Brilliant.
03-31-2006, 03:38 PM
Really nice adjustment to the composition, beelow. The zigzag pathway to the destination is much more interesting than the symmetrical one. Plus, I like the viewer being a reluctant participant. Great work :)
03-31-2006, 04:08 PM
yep. soo much better this way... :)
03-31-2006, 06:14 PM

Very much color of a background is pleasant.

Thanks for stopping by my thread. Best of luck to you!:)
04-02-2006, 04:20 AM
It's a great change! it's much much better than recent one.
Hee hee I love ya use the bridge that cross the cliff, it make different dimension in ya pic and closing up the front guy can increase his expression too.
Wait to see next step dude!
04-02-2006, 09:56 AM
Sky color choices are cool. Not realistic but cool anyway :)
Pull it together. Im not sure what the guy in the front is trying to say?
04-02-2006, 01:46 PM
Nigio- thanx for dropping by dude!
sirBS- thanx still fighting this painting hehe!
Gord-MacDonald- thanx gord, pretty much what I am going for!

Falcor_- How would I go about making it realistic, and what is there not to understand about the guy in the foreground, let me know I am curious to know so I can make the necessary changes! U can also do a paintover if u want and if u have the time!
04-02-2006, 02:21 PM
Flipped and added a bit more work to it, so u guys won't get bored looking at the same thing again and again, hehe!
04-02-2006, 03:31 PM
Looking good, Bryce. Nice movement flowing up and into the picture. Looks like you're finally at the refinement stage.
Two things to look at on the foreground character -- and I know, you've just been working on layout, so you just haven't got down to details yet... First off, his head might be too small for that body. He looks 9+ heads tall. (but you may just be going for something stylized?) Secondly, keep a watch out of your light sources, especially on that man's backside. Would his backpack get much light? Would his back leg? Unless there's another light we can't see, think out what the lantern will cast shadows on.
Good luck with it, it's coming along nicely!
p.s. check my thread for an in-depth answer to the last questions you asked.
04-02-2006, 03:37 PM
Flipped, better =) I think now the composition invites to begin the way.:buttrock:
04-03-2006, 11:10 AM
Lookin hot bee. Lotta changes since I last visited. Details are starting to punch thru. To comment on something: I'm not seeing the whole danger thing in the picture yet. Probably early to look for it, but perhaps make the bridge look more shoddy? A bit torn and damaged, but still somewhat strong enough to hold those men and their equipment. Just a suggestion. Keep it up man.
04-03-2006, 03:24 PM
Hi Bryce.. nice updates, looking better and better. The spiralling bridgework is a nice idea, leads the eye up nicely! Are you going to have more bridges in the background, really thin looking with tiny figures on to give an even more dramatic depth? Like the form of the rocks and the clouds together now too. Keep up the good work!
04-03-2006, 06:30 PM
Hey there, dude! Nice updates, it's been a while since I posted here, but I'm looking into your thread pretty frequently to see how the img evolves :). Looking REALLY good. :)
Crits - when you get to the refinement stage, be carefull to make the logs look round, so they read clearly as tubes/logs in shape. Other than that - everything was mentioned :) Keep it going, dude :) I really like your composition ideas. :D
04-04-2006, 05:01 AM
Dang, somebody has been busy with their entry. Looking mighty sweet with the one bro
Aside from WALRUS's critzs (which i also agree with him), this is definately stronger than the last composition. The rope bridge really helps a lot on the mood and as a lead on for the viewers.
Good job bro, keep it going
04-04-2006, 06:22 AM
Here is a bit of an update, I will make changes necessary, to those suggested. I also ditch the backlight as well, I did not like it, needs to be darker! I am gonna add like deceased stuff on the bridge as well to highten the drama a bit, thanx for ur support gang!
Its looking good from here Bryce. I like the new perspective very much. Keep up the good work.
04-04-2006, 07:46 AM
this is just getting better and better... like that the clouds forms a tunnel...
04-04-2006, 09:17 AM
keep it up BRO!
04-04-2006, 01:44 PM
Looking good so far. I like it flopped like this better. I would show a little air on the right side of the bridge cause right now it looks attached to the wall.
My hat off to you once again for entering both 2D and 3D!
04-04-2006, 09:39 PM
Excellent start with coloring Bryce ! Can't wait to see it finished !
04-04-2006, 09:47 PM
:thumbsup:Nice work Bryce.....like the development of the background....lots of depth
I always knew the characters would look great having followed your thread for the Spectacular challenge.
Coming along well and can't wait to see how this develops...sorry I've not been around to comment untill now
04-05-2006, 06:39 AM
Lookin great so far.. nice concept!!
04-05-2006, 01:43 PM
looking better and better with each post :)
you made some really tough choices along the was so far and i think they are really comming out very well.. :)
i think the colours could do with a work over in the future but there is still a lloooooooonnng way to go :)
so for now keep it up :)
04-05-2006, 02:04 PM
Hey man. Cool piece.
This one might benefit from a little reference. Especially when it comes to the main character. the arm that he has extended towards the viewer isn't as successful as I think you want it to be, because here is where a significant portion of your viewers are going to start their "journey" into your piece..... You I would think about having someone pose for you to get the foreshortening right, and also think about increasing the size of his head.
Also, if you look at the bridge they are walking on, and think about the perspective, the character in the middleground seems to have his legs spread across the entire width of the bridge, while the character in the foreground clearly woudl not be able to do that if he tried, so you might want to revise the middle-ground character's pose a bit.
It's coming along man, and has lots of potential. Make sure to keep that light source nice and clean and warm, so that iit makes those characters in the foreground really pop.
04-05-2006, 09:46 PM
Hey there Bryce, I really love the palette you've chosen for this image, it is foreboding but still so lively! :buttrock: I agree with what some of the others have said, the flipped view helps to pull you into the composition. Great work man!
04-07-2006, 02:36 PM
excellent background in your scene dude!
04-08-2006, 02:22 AM
Very compelling image, you definitely succeeded in making me feel like I'm part of the action, even though I'm not sure I want to follow this guy, doesn't look too safe ahead. Great work overall though, lovely background, I am definitely excited about this piece.
04-08-2006, 03:03 AM
this is looking great man =) i actually enjoy it more flipped, I think it opens it up a tiny bit more..and i love the eerie closed in feel, really atmospheric!
working hard on rearranging everything in the image eh?
i really like how the image curves its a really nice touch.
