Great work on that one Mona, it looks so nice!:applause: My only comment would be on the glasses, they look like they could gain some solidity by straightening some of your strokes on the sides of the glass pieces. It seems these are parts that don't need to be as organic as the rest. What ya think?
The eye looks very alive:cool: good job, chop chop! keep that brush moving!

basket looks very good mona..nice work! I'd think about getting rid of left hand streetlamp, as it clashes with parrot. and the little rock by the hedge just above light coloured GP..looks like an insect on his nose!
the hedge looks really good too.

04-16-2006, 01:48 AM
I agree with shakes about the lamp post, plus don't forget about the form shadow of the basket- in fact, I think you should try and push the lights/shadows more overall in the picture- try playing around a bit with the lightness/contrast sliders and see what could be improved there?
Keep going, it's turning out really well!
Happy Easter!

testing testing... without lamppost and tree... and more shadows to the basket...
maybe something else but the tree, a birdbath? or a gardengnom? then I can add a lot of cute birds... :D

First let me say, I love when people use animals in their pictures, this one is no exception. Maybe you could extend the top of the picture, raise the cityscape in the background so we see more of it, and perhaps make it so the lighscolored gerbil/hampster is angled more towards the background. Anyway really great concept, and I love the colors, and the flowers on the right. Keep it up.

Hi there Mona, the update is looking really excellent! :applause: I especially like the details you've put into the basket. Also I like the idea of adding a birdbath, it would not only give you the option to add "a lot of cute birds" but it might fit in well with your theme. Once the parrot comes in for a landing it could refuel with a drink. :shrug:http://forums.cgsociety.org/images/icons/icon5.gif
Oh and by the way you're starting to sell me on the idea of a GP. ;)

Hey ! I'm not getting any more "newpostmail" for your tread ... I'm must have done something wrong. Sorry!
About those street lamps, are you planning to add the tree on the right as originally planned? Because I think it would be nice to have the lamp partially covered with it and it will a bit increase the perspective.
Otherwise, I looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooove your basket !
I looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooove your parrot
I looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooove your pilot

It's looking fantastic, Mona. I definitely like the clarity now that the lamp post is no longer behind the basket. I also like how the window frame, curtains and flowers frame the composition. It makes the indoors look really cosy and contrasting well with the outdoors
Climax
04-22-2006, 05:50 AM
Hi Mona! Contrast in the basket looks better now, I see the bird too dark, try to "bounce" some light from the flor on him, when you put the lamps back on, move aside the one behind the bird, it creates a "merge of figures" try to balance the overall contrast, allways when painting look at your canvas with the eyes almost closed, so you see better dark and bright areas, then you conpensate the volumes where need it, play more with darker shadows in the first plane, they bring up your subjects of interest:thumbsup:
I am not trying to be a smart guy :), just give opinions of what i see, but the look of your paint must come deep from your heart, when you feel happiness with your work then you know you are doing right no matters what other say.
See ya later!
shakes
04-22-2006, 06:10 AM
that looks great Mona! better without lamp post- and makes the city more visible, which is good, coz the city is a nice contrast to the nature you have here. would be good to replace tree with something, although I liked your tree! a bird bath is a great idea, and I like the idea of lotsa birdies!!

Hey Mona, really like your imaginative menu and boarding ticket ("Do not chew on the lines..." etc.) Might want to use Photoshop's burn tool to slightly alter and age the colors of these items. (Sometimes the burn and dodge tools work really well rounding out characters with hair by adding shading and highlights in a simple quick manner, too.)
Great work! Looking forward to seeing more...

Hi makaron,
I realy like your sensibility for light, texture and value of colours. I specialy like fur on those two hamsters and transparency of vase. Maybe, it's just one sugestion, you may draw gentle refraction through the vase.
Good luck, and I hope we'll see soon some more.

thank you all for the comments I got... I´m really happy for the pointers and tricks you share :)
I have two versions now of this image, one with the tree and one with the birdbath... leaning towards the birdbathversion as it looks like now...
haven´t done so much work on it for a week now, but today I have picked up the work again and starting on the last touch on the fur... one GP is almost done, two GPs to go...
an example how the fur looks like for now is this...

Hey, Mona, looking good! I love the bird poses on the birdbath. Especially that one preening her (his?) wing - Our bird looks just like that when she preens! :)
I know you're still working on the b irdbath, so I'm sure you've already got this covered, but right now it's a bit hard to read the depth of the top of the bath: It looks like the black winged bird is standing right next to the preening bird, when in fact, looking at their feet shows they're far apart on the top rim. Maybe mving the black-wing right a bit so it's not on a tangent but partly behind the preener? Anyhow, just a thought...
oh, and thank you so much for the great GP photos, haven't had a chance to show them to Talia yet. I told her about them, and she told me about walking around the lake and seeing baby ducklings, newly hatched around here. Doubt I'll make it to the lake to send a photo, but if I do, I'll let you know! :)

Really lovely stuff, Mona. All the critters and flowers have a consistent dreamy feel about them which works really well. I like that invitation with the bit cut out of it too. Hi !
I'll try to help...
Some ideas without order:
- The parrot and especialy the parrot's left wing should not stick that way to the curtains. Same for the basket top limit that is on the same line as the green plan top limit, flattening the reading of the area.
- Perphaps you can try to paint transluscent curtains.
- Or just perhaps paint the curtain with less importance on the left, that would create more space around the parrot.
- U can bring more volume to the fellow in the foreground.
- The bird's tale can go lighter and lighter
I' d like to be more precise but my limited english language won't allow it :/
Good work.

I'm voting for the lower right (dark brownish-red) too. Nice and dramatic, and it frames the image with a colour that matches the scene. As for the shape, the lower right seems to lack a reason for them to be drawn so much open on the left side. It doesn't look as natural as the way they hang in the other versions. It sure is great seeing it all coming together like this. Must be getting close now

Hey Mona,
just have seen the latest updates - a little late again here:blush: - and I like the coloring of the lower left corner most...and the shape of the lower right corner:) ! Now you have very different votings, it seems to be very much a matter of personal taste...it's up to you and I'm curious to see the next update!
Have a nice weekend!:wavey:

Hello Mona!
What a change you've made since my last visit, so Ninja will not be there after all?
Well the parrot is just wonderful! I tend to prefer the last one of your curtain tests, because it's darker and it's framing the field a bit better, but maybe you could use a different hue so that it doesn't conflict with the parrot's color. Da man says, this rocks... euh... this reggaes! :D  ;)

hi mona
i liked the 4th and the 6th ones
the dark gray and dark red ones i mean.
but its hard to decide which pose of curtains is good maybe the 6th one becouse i like to see the windowframe (i dont know if this is a true word for it but i just hope you can understand).

Hello Mona, I think that if you decrease the intensity of the green outside your parrot will come out, try lighting that layer, remember it is a shiny day all elements outdoors should look a bit pale.
You are almost at the end of your journey :bounce: courtains seem better to me in a clear color, maybe blue, but you'll see it better when fixing the background. see ya! :wavey:

I just noticed where you've positioned the bird bath, with the critters around it. Perfect! Also, in this latest version we can still see where you've ended the GPs' shadow along the bottom of the frame. If you could extend that shadow beyond the bottom of the image, or crop that bit off, then I think you're on a winner

Hello mona!, they look great! only one observation: shadows must be darker at the base of objects and gradually lighter as they go away from the emiter, that would make them appear better, right now the little fellows look like oveerimposed, the shadows will integrate them with the floor and I bet you'll see the diference ;)
Hurry up! time is flying now! :p

hi makaron, its been awhile since i visit ur entry, everything turns out fine my friend, just a slight update and ur done,i would suggest that u add some softshadows onto those objects that interacting with the gp to create more depth betweens the characters and the rest of the elements like what climax and cyberone have mentioned:)something like ambient occlusion for 3d terms, create a new layer with overlay or multiply blending mode and overpaint some dark colors on it and its done:scream:love the fur my friend

the story behind...
This journey begins with a flyer in my mailbox... I read it out load to the guinea pigs and told them. Promise, we are going there and buy a lot of food. And then I put the flyer in the paperpile.. But they didn´t wanna wait... oh no! They took the matter in there own paws... They wanted to leave right away on the journey...
Next day when I went in the kitchen and saw what they was doing...They was waiting for the parrot to land... So what to do? Nothing. They had their tickets and money so, just have to wish them luck on their journey...
Wonderful image and story Mona!
Congratulations on your finished work!

Hey Mona thanks so much for your support during this Challenge! It always lifted my spirits to see your little avatar GP running along the side of the page -- absolutely precious. I'm sending my sister a pic of your final image. You've created an absolutely professional, inspiring, wonderfully warm and uplifting image -- the creative details, the sense of fun and imagination -- like MT Cup and DaddyMack have suggested the next step could be writing a fully illustrated GP book...and it all started here! Can't wait to see that happen!

Hi again Mona,
one thing I forgot to mention in my last post was something I've seen others saying quite a bit - how much your encouragement and thoughtful suggestions are appreciated throughout this forum. Your comments certainly helped me a lot, not only in technical stuff (no self-respecting rat should have to comb the fur on his feet) but also in encouragement. Just wanted to say thanks!

It was a pleasure to follow, Mona;) ! But now there are some urgent questions...
Do the GP's enjoy the flight? What happens in the city? And of course: Can the parrot bring them back after a day of free food:scream: !!???
So I agree with Lolo: The story must continue!:bounce:

and the link for the highres (http://hem.bredband.net/makaron/finalnet.jpg) image...
the story behind...
