Hi, personaly I like the top left one. I think it shows they are on a jouney and their destination is clear.

I Do like the Top left for composition,

rather than "we are heading off".

another series of concepts,I want to get some kind of grand future city in here somewhere & haven't put much effort into foreground figures as of yet,

attached todays sketches for the background
Top left seems to be well received & I also felt it was the best for telling a story..I like the forground elements but the whole image idea seems a bit cliched to me..I really like the colour options in the 3rd one..a future city over a desrt landscape would be cool.

however in keeping with the story I've been thinking of..
..a scrap yard for old robots,with a few 'bots making a hole in the fence & preparing for freedom..I can sneek my grand city behind the fence as a symbol of the journey they are about to embark on :)..& making a bunch of old grungy bots will be fun..

more updates soon

I have a story..
set in a derelict scrap yard filled with old robots,a small band of 'bots have found/created a hole in the fence & are preparing for a journey out into the city beyond the walls of the scrap yard.

Nice start on bringing them into the third dimension mate! Thos eyebrows are going to be a godsend for conveying the emotion! Maybe compliment them with a set of slopy half closed eyelids?

Crin,I like the eyelid idea,would add a bit more character for sure :)..the eyeball(pupil) in the GI render is hidden behind what will be a glass covering..I can't wait to start dirtying this guy up with some textures

a busy day today..
modeling is nearly finished on the first character,need to fix the hands & feet & some other small details,I'm uv mapping as I model so texturing can also take place at the modeling stage,

mmbenya..the wires look a bit heavy in the last shot,I might cull out some edges before this one is done.

looking forward to your C&C

Nice! One small suggestion, I love the texturing, test, but maybe include larger patches where the paint is still intact. THis would indicate the the wear on the paint is from use on specific parts as oppose to there being wear throughout the paint on the whole body.

Just a suggestion.

Feeling of chipped paint is really good. I would add maybe a little different shades of red to give more depth, replaced parts or something like that - but that's really matter of opinion. Keep up the good work!

rigging,pose & texture testing,
I've baked some parts of the earlier shader test into a texture map & painted in extra details,grime,scratches,decals etc.
also created a rig for ease of posing..& modelled a suitcase.

good points,I baked out the torso to a template & painted in some details while erasing some of the rust from the torso,might do the same for the head :)

robobot..yep, I addded some variation in the torse texture,the solid red wasa bit much for me too

Hynol..I'll try & get a brushed metal one in..though it' will no doubt be a little a bit grungy,& yes there's definitely a 'Robots' influence in this 'bot,a good film


..this bot will be one of several 'bots in a group..so there should be a good selection of different texturing styles,I'll put it aside now & start on a couple new designs & maybe some miscellaneous props.

my only critique is the suitcase. The textures look a little blurry on the actual model, or was that intended?

Hi Stefan

I've spent some time going through your thread. Your work so far has been nothing short of inspirational. I would like to see a concept sketch of the final composition, or are you planning on improvising as you are going along.



The only thing I don't like as much is the robot's eyes. It has allot to to do with my own personal taste, but I was hoping that you would add eyelids; I think it could be a useful tool to enhance the robots emotion.

Other than that I like what you have done so far.

The new robot is also looking good, keep it up and good luck.

the last post is very much a wip..I hate the feet on it & I possibly went a bit overboard on the pistons,lol...not sure if this model is in keeping with the style of last model though,but I'm running with it

I don't think so, you've placed them well on the character and it adds to the belief that it could actually move. They also add a lot of detail.

Fantastic work Stefan!! Concepts, models, textures…

I have 1 crit for your suitcase. You might want the make the different logo labels into stickers on the case, with their own bumps and wear-not subject to the underlying worn leather texture. (they currently look stenciled/airbrushed-on, not stuck-on like stickers)

I think I'm getting carried with the pistons :)..might tone them back a bit later..still working on the design this one
I actually agree with you on this one-to an extent The placement seems to be more limiting than anything else. adjusting the anchor points of the various pistons on the legs will make them appear to be much more functional.

actual texture size is 2048x2048,I've also made a reflection map & bump map,along with a generic tiling texture to use on the not so obvious parts

Being a product designer myself usually I see robots and they annoy me becuase they just don't look mechanical enough. But yours... yours are excellent, you really have the whole industrial look nailed! Fantastic textures too. Good luck keping up your pace though! :eek: How fast can one man work before something in his head pops? :shrug:

matwire..heh,there's a lot of threads here delaying my progress too,I'm torn between working on mine or admiring everyone elses :D

Versiden..certainly wires & cables are coming..whats a bot without lots of cables :)

Crin..that's good to hear,I'm going to rig this one too & see hjow feasible he is when walking..should be interesting

Wintermute..I agree about the stickers,the bump map should have considered them,though..I doubt they will even be seen in the final render so might leave that for a bit,I've removed a couple of those leg pistons,might add some cables to the others & see if it works..thanks for subscribing!



& that's another day done,hopefully I can get his legs & feet fixed up & start a new bot over the weekend,

Nice work on that bot Stefan! Is that a spring between the torso and hips? if so, the secondary torso motion on his walk cycle could be very amusing–bouncing and wobbling about! :D Fantastic textures all around!

Hi..yeah the heel I didn't get around to yet,I like the idea of the 3 toes & a heel.
will be working on that some more today

Shakes..PC's going fine....so far so good,I expect the final render will be several passes,forground elements,background etc..that way I dont need to fuss too mcuh about a massive polycount.

I'm starting to think the first character wont make the final render,thinking I'll go more for hard sci-fi rather than anything too 'toony' & the first model just doesn't fit well with the direction these bots are heading..the concept of bots escaping through the hole in the fence with a grand cityscape beyond still remains.....

atra..yes,modeling & mapping is very important,especially modeling hard surface stuff where there's many repeated elements that get cloned around

Yeah, you've come away from the original toony concept :) Go for a style that you feel comfortable with, and it seems to me that would be hard sci fi more than toony. And by god does it look good :) Looking forward to more updates!

If texturing the breaks doesn't work to your liking, you can try cutting the cracks in to the glass, that way you'll get correct reflections and refraction from the edges as well as the different pieces (think "broken mirror" look)

Just a thought :) Keep it up!

monsitj...(awesome Spectacular entry you made)..The renders are using hdri with the 3dsmax skylight,diffuse & reflection maps are being used along with some procedurals,the reflect maps are to get the reflection working only on certain parts(though I'm still tweaking this aspect)..no bump maps have been used yet.
there's also a specular only light,plus 3 small omnis for the blue light,(inspired by a car stereo) :)


Wintermute..modeling the cracks sounded good,I had a go earlier using Procutter (http://www.npowersoftware.com/booleans/pboverview.htm) & results we're not that great so I'm still tweaking the glass,

urgaffel..yep,I might even turn it into trash & sneak it into the final render somewhere,I'm thinking a nice contrast to the big city will be an old scrap yard,so a lot of these bots as well as being featured whole,will also be dismantled & scattered about as trash.

I keep thinking I'd whack it with a crowbar,lol...it keeps reminding of the flying bots in Halflife2 which so often become targets for the infamous crowbar

Womball...The orange of the texture is a tad too even
I do agree,there is some subtle variation in the red part of the map,maybe too subtle?.adding the red was tricky,but I did want something different to the previous bot..good to have you watching :)

there's a couple errors in it,some missing textures on the back,& I forgot to turn the wires on one side to 'visible' :D ..there's a general lack of detail on the backside as I don't expect that part to be seen in the final render,still a bit of tweaking need on some areas,the glass in particular needs more grime..but I'll put this one aside now & move onto the next one

Nice turn table man. The surface of the metal seems too shinny for the ammount of wear it has. I know it is missing some textures and all. Is that why it is so high in specularity and reflectivity?

I love the details and it does remind me of those little bots in half life 2. I use the crowbar as well. :wise:

gotta love that, and the sign of a true perfectionist! couldn't agree more though. you've inspired me to go hard with my textures when I get to mine..meanwhile, I'll enjoy watching you go for it!
