thanks again for the comments! :)

se7enthcin..yeah,I agree about the reflection being too strong, there's a heap of errors in that turntable if you look hard enough(I somehow managed to turn off all the red wires too & I'm wondering if my reflect maps were turned on at all)..final render will be quite stylised so I doubt you'll notice in the final piece

bern_20..the idea is of several robots escaping a scrapyard where they live/work,there will be a long wall of some kind with a hole in it,through the hole(& above the fence) you'll see a grand futuristic city..symbolic of the journey away from the scrapyard..I may also add a monorail..again symbolic of a journey to come.
so I expect a nice juxtapostion between battered & beaten(bots & scrapyard) & gleaming new & modern(the city beyond).

that's just a rough idea though,I'm still working out how to put it all together so I figure I'll work on props & bots till the final scene comes to me.

shakes...dont go too hard though, your style of material & textures is perfect for your work,I wouldnt change a thing about your texturing.

not sure what I'll start on next, might have a crack at the ruined wall, seeing everyone having fun with zbrush has me wanting to fire that up for some displacement fun

Cheers
Stefan

Waouwwwwwww,, man, you work too fast, i never see this thread before shame on me!

I love your sketch, lot of style, and the modeling is the same, amazing work, i will follow you entry for sure, keep this way!!

ps: don't know if somebody ask, but which render did you use? U work on max8, is this mental ray?

Stefan-Morrell
03-16-2006, 03:03 AM
thanks for checking out my entry Lombardo :)

for rendering..I'm using Max8 with light-tracer & hdri,I haven't yet decided on a final renderer to use on this scene but for testing puroses the setup I have now is reasonably fast(about 1-2 minutes for each render)
the untextured shots are also using lighttracer, with very low samples to speed things up

Cheers

2 MINUTES!?!? You could render out a decent length animation with that. They look like 30 minute renders.... Not sure what its going to look like at the final render if your only using "low settings" BTW thanks for the link. I will check up on that when I have more time.

2 MINUTES!?!? You could render out a decent length animation with that. They look like 30 minute renders

& the textured parts in the turntable rendered at less than 1minute (I switched off the lighttracer for that part)..I've got no patience for slow renders, lol

"BTW thanks for the link. I will check up on that when I have more time."
no worries, Leigh has some great articles about texturing that should offer you a good basic understanding of whats required,

*edit..was about to give you another link.. (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=63930) looks liike you've already found it though:thumbsup:

started modeling the 3rd bot, this will be a stocky one wheeled machine, looking forward to adding lot's of detail.

I'm also thinking about making a more 'human' style bot, something the viewer can more easily relate to.
the bots made so far will be more or less 'pets' of the main figure.

I only really like to comment when I have something I think I can add to the piece. In your case I havn't made a comment in quite some time, simply because it looks like you have everything under control. The only things I would mention don't seem post worthy.

So just say keep it up, it's great work your producing and I'm enjoying your journey.

garphik
03-22-2006, 04:59 AM
hey Stefan,
very good progress on this one, lovely concept and implementation, esp texturing and the attention to modelling details. I am looking forward to see the entire implementation.

My crit is, your textures are really good, but your materials do not use the reflection mapping so your rust / less shiny area is equally reflective / specular.

keep it up dude !

Stefan-Morrell
03-22-2006, 06:23 AM
luigithekid,oceanbluesky,bartp..thanks guys :)

shakes..cheers mate..you seem to have a new avatar for every day of the week ,lol :)

stavrevstefan..I started by looking at tyres but the overall design is all freestyle,I've no idea if it could function as a tyre though..I'm guessing those grooves need to be in a specific layout for it to work correctly ..fingers crossed no tyre experts see it,lol :)
sci-fi for me is easier if I just let go & model it all freestyle..make it look cool first & make it function second.

tilite..Cheers,I feel that way about so many threads here ,I'm restraining my self from making too many 'wow' comments on other peoples work..
..sometimes though I just can't help it.

garphik...thanks,I agree completely about the lack of a reflection map to define what parts reflect..I have made some, just haven't had the strength up enough for it to be noticable..also forgot to turn it on at all for the turntable of the 3rd bot...
a good point though as the whole 'bot would never have the same amount of relectivity with all the chipped paint it has.

hopefully I'll get some arms modeled onto this bot soon,

Cheers
Stefan

I had no idea it was you who was visiting me. This is my favourite thread in this challenge! Your work is awesome, the creativity, the details, the texturing, everything!

One thing that I wanted to mention is that I feel somehow your red robot's face was more expressive before it was textured. May be the "eyebrows" have kind of "dissappeared" in the texturing process?

textures are awesome.
I like all models but the first one.
the first one (red one) doesn't seem to be original.
it reminds me a mixture of characters in "ROBOTS".
and there is something wrong in the head, may be eyes.
I like the other robots better than the red one.
and I think they have something that I would like to show them to my classmates
as a good design and good texture

Cheers guys :)

I thought I'd put this project aside for a couple days & come back to it with a fresh eye.

I was also on the verge of drastically changing the whole scene..thinking about making a story of the african stink ant (http://www.mjt.org/exhibits/stinkant.htm) rather than robots, the life of a stink ant is intriguing & a journey like no other..
...but..I'll stick with the original robot concept,no point changing everything now & I'm really looking forward to making some scenery for it.

shahabp,fer3d ...I agree about the first 'bot,it was decided soon after making it that it wouldn't make the final render, the style of the first bot is very different to the other one & not in keeping with the overall 'hard sci-fi' look I'll be going for

DimitrisLiatsos ditto your organic stuff ;)

Yeah, I agree with Shakes. The 'bots are fantastic and it's a real treat to watch your updates. I have no doubt that they will have as much personality as any other type of 'critters' by the time you're finished with them. Your texturing and level of detail are wonderful.

a break down of the wheel texture, the tread is sampled colour from the front part, painted with a very rough brush to give a speckled look, plus several overlayed 'grunge' layers to build up the dirt.
I used the uv template for the deep parts of the tread, ensuring the wireframe was black I set it to multiply & added some blur

Stefan-Morrell

hey guys thanks again for the support :)..see above for details on the wheel texture

your all pulling of some great stuff for this challenge & getting any work done isn't made easier while i'm admiring everyone elses work

I've been working on a new figure..but am a little unsure about comitting it to be in this project,it might work well as a figure the viewer can relate to..(at least more so than a bot)..so,wstill working on it..&very much a WIP

regardless of what the final image is ..it will be hard scifi & will feature all the bots made so far.
I've been thinking about camera mapping the background,so that'll save a lot of time not having to uv any of the buildings

anyway..here's a shot of what I'm modeling this week, not submitted as a milestone yet

Cheers

DOF really gives nice effect to your background. As everyone is saying, the back looks great ... specially the texturing. The only thing that I can see is the specular on the wall closer to camera... it is so clean ... and I suppose it would be better to brake it up with some noise.

WOW, pretty realistic.

One suggestion: maybe the white building is too white compairing with the environment. For me it's too new. It's only my opinion. I would put some dirt there on the walls.

simovici..cheers man,I agree on the white wall, too plain..that'll be fixed in post with some grime..or maybe even replaced with a brick building

all the city will be heavily postworked to add heavy grime, smog etc.

Really nice modelling of the background there Stefan. I like the last (landscape version) the best.
Sort of gives a feeling of a much larger city, and more depth.
But then I don’t know how the layout of your final image will be…?
If you want to make a Bladerunner feel here you might consider making it dark night or evening.
Everything gets more dramatic with lighting like that.
But then again it depends on your plan fore the final Image….
The stuff you have don so far looks wonderful!
So this definitely looks like a serious contender for the top prize in my opinion!

Good luck with the rest!

Try ..I agree about the landscape version..much more depth, hopefully the lighting & atmosphere will play a large part in making up the final image

Such a city landscape is exactly what I hate heartily. I just feel the stinking atmosphere pulsing with roar of the stony breath  The background perfectly creates the city atmosphere even if it`s still untextured! Great modeling.

more city modeling..I've taken out the road & added a platform, plus many smaller sci-fi details.

wow , grat improvement on this one, i find it way more interesting than the other background. like the scifi details
one thing, Where will you putt the characters? maybe a quick scketch over the background will help to see how the final comp would look like

wow , grat improvement on this one, i find it way more interesting than the other background. Where will you putt the characters?

heh,I'm starting to wonder about that :\..possibly sitting on the ledge?(on the far right),I may have to move the barrier a bit to accomodate her..or create a small set of steps for the character to sit on..gazing out to the city..the floater bot can be in front of her

I only have a vague idea of tying the figures into the background though..lot's of work to do

& it may look a bit chaotic at the moment..that's something I hope to get past with postwork, when adding atmosphere etc.

my plan now is to work out the lighting, then break the scene up into more managable sections

I'm trying to get this rendered now, with multiple crashes along the way :\..using final render stage 1 as the renderer.
all the characters are rendered & I'm doing the distant background now(been rendering for 2 hrs already)..then the midground & then I can finally pull it into Photoshop for some fun

Great stuff! The inside surface of the lamps is unexpectedly blue, but other textures create a dense, sad, industrial mood. If this was your idea, then it`s very well done!

putting it all together, still need to do a bit of tweaking to avoid it all looking too cluttered, more distant buildings to be added, effects etc.
hoping for some C&C on this stage before I get it finalised,
my office is being painted tomorrow so it all needs to be wrapped up by tonight

Stefan_Morrell,

:bounce:

First off, Unbelievable work. One of the most stunning of the challenge.

Second, I beleive the cool colors of the first emphasize the desolate, machine world feel better, though the contrast of the warmer, bottom version seems to give the scene more depth.

The left to right reading of the top also feels a bit more comfortable than starting the Westernized viewer off with the somewhat vacant lef corner first :D

So, I vote for the cool top. And maybe you could make the characters suit red, as in the second, to emphasize the depth and focal point more. :buttrock:

Though this scene is gorgeous and enviable either way.

Make the painters and their fumes wait until everything is traveling FTP. :argh:

Hey Cori

getting some depth in this & avoiding the cluttered look is proving to be a challenge

I certainly agree about the left to right reading of the top one..& I find that somewhat bizzarre too as the whole image was contructed with right to left in mind,lol..it wasn't till I flipped it horizontally & realised how much better it looked.
Now I'll have to reverse the street sign text.

Make the painters and their fumes wait until everything is traveling FTP

lol.wish I could,unfortunately I'm the painter

looks fantastic Stephan..congrats on pulling it off mate! I definitely prefer the left one-if you want some thoughts,I'd say the wing on the very center flying bot is a bit destracting- takes away from the others a bit( a bit too big?)love the idea of the spherical bots flying around..maybe you could add a couple more on the right
the only other thing I'd suggest is the bot with legs looks a bit cut off- you could move him back a bit to make him more visible.
that's all..the rest is superb- well done!

This is the kind of illustration I wish to see on a great sci-fi book! You have a very personal, asounding way to "treat" 3D.Perfect.

Hey Stefan,
Either way it looks good.
The only thing I feel is that now that the characters are in there the grand scale of the environment isn't so grand. Maybe play with the scale of the figures and that may help with the composition. Also is the main character were to be looking "into" the frame it might lead the veiwrs eye into the picture. Right now the characters eyeline stop my eyes from wondering and enjoying the great backgrounds. That is also in part because of the light post.
It's like a big visual wall that stops the flow of the composition. A reduction of the contrast between the nearly white sign and the darkness behind it may be a soulution without moving things. I would also move the center bot somewhere else. Right wow it creates a circle or bullseye right in the middle of the image. That also detracts from the relationship between the character and the environment.

Sorry for the wordy crit. I feel that you are so close to making something really amazing.

Fantastic job and best of luck.

Sorry for the wordy crit.

not at all man :-)..thank you very much for taking the time..I'll mull over this some more tonight, you've made some very good points..some of which I've also been thinking.

& that center bot..damn,it really is a bulls eye isn't it..I hadn't really noticed till you mentioned it

shakes..Cheers mate,& yes, those bot legs did get cut off..had a hell of a time figuring out where to put it,lol.
each bot is on a seperate layer too so I can freely move everything around

hi stefan, great work so far. Something i really think you should play with is the pose of the main character, and her size. Right now she is gigantic compared to the enviroment. The distance betwen her and the first light post is what makes her look that big. it feels too close, So if she was stood up her chest would be by the no parking sign.
So i would definatly scale all down. Other thing is that the spherical bot near the center of the image is too distracting, i would take it away to avoid braking the flow of the image, from the foreground to the background.
About her pose, what if she was trying to jump down from there, or going into the city... dont know.. just some thoughts.. any way great work. keep it up, and be fast.. the clock is ticking :scream:

A big work has been done here. So many details everywhere... too many details I think... It's difficult to focus on the main idea !!!
I think it's due to a lack of depth in the picture, because there's a lot of white / grey, and there's nothing to make our eyes focus on the character. I think you should work on this... i think ;)
Anyway good luck, that's a great sci-fi picture !

Stefan_Morrell,

Ha. My apologies.

lol.wish I could,unfortunately I'm the painter

In that case, quit fiddling with the computer and get to work. :p

But not before you can shift the bullseye to a new position, as pointed out by KOryH, of course. Amazing what one person sees suddenly becomes distracting for everyone else too. Still a bit of time for perfection and before the Bossman turns you into his Gliden pumpkin. :banghead:

"With the city skytraffic roaring overhead Our heroine is about to embark on a great journey..she sits patiently awaiting transport away from the old city.
...while being viewed as a curiosity by the local 'Bots."

I've tried to instil a sense of wonder in this image,I imagine this city to be heavily polluted at the lower levels & humans would need some kind of breathing apparatus to aid in breathing the toxic air.
while high above the city may be roaring with life, below it's frequented more by robots with nothing better to do.
