Here's a sketch to get things started. This is a stranded pirate who embarks on a journey for parts unknown after realizing he has only three bottles of rum left.

Standard Pirate? Is there a non-standard kind? :D

Yes... here in Michigan. Detroit area. You in the neighborhood?

Thanks for the wishings of luck, everyone! The same back at yas!

Marcoracer: I think I wrote stranded, not standard. However, I will make sure that this pirate is as non-standard as humanly possible. Or as standard as possible. I'm not sure which yet.
Looks like we're both living in the same town. Well, good luck again!! :D

Hahaha! Me and my dislexia..

That's cool. Someone here within a couple miles of me. You ever go to the WAB? (Woodward Ave Brewers) We should get together for a drink and talk shop. Is your husband in the arts too? Drag him along!!

I don't usually make clean line work when I start a piece. This is about as close as it gets.
The challenge will be going so long that I'm sure I will brainstorm other concepts. However, I'm going to continue developing this concept for now, since I'm really enjoying it. :)

Hey sheepie!

I think if you'd put him on a beach, pushing that makeshift raft
into water, it would make it more clear it's the beginnings of a journey and not
some stormy middle part of it ?

Squibbit: Hmmm...you have a point. However, that would kind of ruin the whole composition I had planned. I'll think on this one...maybe there's some other way to emphasize that he's leaving the island. Weeping islanders, perhaps?
Thanks for the suggestion! :buttrock:

Marcoracer: Yep, right by the W.A.B. Husband is a graphic designer and dabbles in comic art on the side.
Would be cool to meet up some time. Drop me an email!

you could have him paddling away too, with hands , or a piece of board or sumthin

Perhaps a couple of monkeys waveing him off. :)
Or a second floating device with a lot of stuff, like food, clothes and RUM.
I really liked the binocular (Or perhaps it's called monocular). It gives the sense of a far distance.

Good Luck!

Here is another scenario. The pirate is floating away from his sinking ship, instead of leaving an island.
I would probably have a lot more floating debris in the water, if I develop this version more.

I like your most recent sketch the best, floating away...

Great theme! Want to tutor me on concept design?

GoodLuck!

why does it matter where he came from or where he's going? it certainly doesn't seam to matter to him. he has the contented expression of a seasoned old rogue who knows he get himself out of any situation Her Majesty's Navy or a shark's jaws can put him into.

yarrr! that be a right pirate kind o' attitude, me hearty. ya nailed it.

have fun with the colorin'

im slightly worried that at first glance, it looks like he's at the end of his journey. Seeing as his ship has sunk. Also, the heavy waves and no sign of land make it seem like he is far out to sea and not at the beginning of a journey. I love the character though. Looks totally drunk and without a care in the world. cool.

Hey, I appreciate all the feedback. Sorry it has taken me so long to respond, but I was on vacation for a week and then got caught up in school work and other projects!

domclubb - Yeah, the whole thing about not being able to tell what part of the journey the pirate is on is a legitimate concern in the context of the challenge. I'm not quite sure what I'm going to do about it, yet. I partly like that it isn't really obvious that this is the start of his journey, even though it is(at least, in my mind)....

anzibon - Thanks man! You seem to have read into the pic what I was originally trying to express. :D

rasamaya & beelow - Thanks! Good luck to both of you!
