Unlike last time, I'm now swimming with ideas. Concept 1 is in kind of a film noir style. A P.I. is starting his search for a missing woman and the road ahead of him is a long one with many distractions. Finding the small clues in such a bright surrounding is never an easy task.

Hey Matthew,

Nice to see you here again and good luck. Your idea is very interesting and look forward to this in 3d . I think really imposing buildings are needed here.

i think he needs to be holding the photo in front of him strethced out a bit so it brings our attention to it more, i didn't understand what the piece was about until i read your message.

Hey guys. Thanks for the support.

Dave: I agree with you about needing to draw more attention to the photograph. I'll play around with different poses and camera angles to see what shows it best. But first things first. Time to start getting the layout and buildings sketched out.

As others have said, it has a really nice film noir style to it.

Maybe you could add some more clues as to the fact he is a detective? eg mostly hidden gun, etc.

Very nice sketch, and very nice concept ! :applause:

By looking the sketch, I had believed the 'private' is searching for missing child. Just because photo really appears as one of a child...

I found the idea of missing child stronger than missing woman, but it's just my humble opinion, ( not your's ) :hmm:

For the style on this one, I'm thinking about going back to something I used to be rather good at. At the moment, the plan is to focus on the environment and incorporate a real person into it. For the person, I'll probably end up with the traditional trench coad and fedora. That's pretty much the signature uniform for private investigators. :D Once I decide on the camera angle, it'll be easier to decide what all I can show. It'll be interesting to see how it turns out.

My brain has officially worn out from researching styles and architecture. But I did get a new perspective on it. Literally. I'm going to change the vantage point from street level up to about 3rd or 4th floor level and have the PI standing at the window holding the picture up against the window so we can see it and see his reflection as he's staring out at the city.

After brainstorming and working to throw together a concept to better explain my ramblings, this is what I've come up with and I think it's pretty close to what I'll end up doing. Once it gets into the realm of 3D, it'll be easier to make the blocking better.

Okay, I'm stumped! I don't know which version to work off. I like them both and each one has its strengths and weaknesses. I've asked my friends around here and both images have the same number of votes. I need to decide soon or time will run out before I'm done. Any suggestions would be helpful. Or at least help me find a coin to flip. :shrug:

Choosing between the two versions is a tough one. The first seems stronger in the sense of a journey beginning, but the second has a nice visual trick with the PI holding the picture on the window and trying to imagine where the girl might be. Tough decision! I'm no help. I like them both.

Glenn: Thanks for trying, but unfortunately it's the same no matter who I talk to. One person says verson 1 is better then the next says version 2. It's tied at 5 each. So I flipped a coin and best 2 out of 3, concept 1 was victorious. So the man on the street it is.

Everybody: Thanks. I'm hoping it'll translate into something that's even close to what's in my mind. We shall see.

I like concept 1 better, as well. It will be interesting to do all those period elements. I think that the way that he is now feels a bit incidental, doesn´t necessarily pull you into his search. Maybe study his pose and his relationship to the picture? Just an idea. Good luck!

Thanks. I'm playing around with camera angles, poses and the possiblity of incorporating two characters instead of just the one. Maybe having some interaction between them to move the story along. Chances are I'll start on the buildings and get that part done before finalizing the human element.

Nice concept. I like the first concept more, because it's really a journey. I cannot see this in the second. It seems he remember of the woman, perhaps she is dead, etc. But I dont think he will begin to search her.
So keep your first idea.

Thanks guys. Although I like both, I agree about the superiority of the first concept for this challenge. I've started modeling the buildings, but it may be on hold for a little bit. I had a bit of an accident last night (perfect end to a crappy day) and I'm seeing a doctor today to check out my hand. with luck it'll only be a day or 2 before I can model again. Right now I'm doing everything left handed. Being right handed, it's become quite a pain.

Sort of good news. The doc says it's probably not broken. Probably "traumatic impact tendonitis." But, he sent the x-rays to a specialist because there's a bone in my wrist that he couldn't see very well. If that one has a fracture, I'm in potential deep doo-doo because it may require surgery to fix. If it's okay, I should be back to almost normal within a week. Either way, it looks like no modeling for me for a few days. I tried and it just doesn't work with the brace and pain. :sad: On the bright side, it gives me a chance to catch up with everybody else's progress. So, the bright side has been found. On with the challenge! :thumbsup:

Too bad about the hand, now you have time to think about your image which I find helps me. Anyways, I may be late but I would vote for the first concept too, the one at street level. You get the sense of walking and going on a journey much more than the other concept. Good luck .

Thanks, Mike. I have had plenty of time to think about the image, but I've not been able to do anything about it. Tried modeling, but I can't work the mouse properly. The hand isn't doing any better so I'm off to the doctor again in a few minutes. Yay. :rolleyes:

Well, things are slowly starting to look better. I was able to do some modeling today for the first time in almost 2 weeks. I can't work on it for long periods of time, but it's something. Hopefuuly I'll have something to show in the next couple days. I've also decided on the "final" composition for the picture. So, that's really all there is to report at the moment.

It's been slow going, but I'm able to get some stuff done. The wrist is still bugging me, but it's getting better. So I'll do what I can and hopefully it'll get done in time. If not, I'll finish it after the challenge. This month's lesson: don't do stupid stuff.

Added in a bakery which may end up getting pushed down the street a bit later. I'm not sure yet. Also added in a temporary sky because I could.

Thanks everybody. My wrist is slowly getting better, so that's a good sign. I can actually use the computer for more than a few minutes at a time now. I'm thinking about changing the bakery to something else, but I'm not sure what yet. The neon lights will definately be in there. It's just a matter of figuring out a good way to do them. Last night I modeled the majority of the hotel that will go across the street. That should get done and posted tonight (crossing my fingers). Other than that, not much more to report for now. :thumbsup: Later.

Calling it shading but it's modeling too. I'm kind of bouncing between modeling, texturing and lighting. It's slowly coming along.

Yeah. I got so sick of the magazines that I haven't gotten back to them yet. I also have to fix the cigarette packs. It's not really noticable in the small images, but they're obviously floating in the higher res pics. Not exactly sure how I missed that. :shrug: At least that one's easy to fix. Anyway, thanks for the encouragement. :beer:

Thanks melkao and Deser. I had a bit of a relapse with my wrist so I haven't been able to do much. I'm not sure if I'll be able to get it done by the end of the challenge, but I hope so. If not, I'll have to finish it up after the deadline. Either way, it will get done because I like this one and want to see it finished.

Hi everybody. I have some bad, but not completely unexpected news. Between my wrist injury, getting violently ill and a couple other things I don't care to talk about, I won't be able to get this image done by the deadline. I could probably push it, but I really don't feel it would live up to my standards, so I'd rather take my time and finish it properly. In the mean time I've got a few other projects in the works that I'm pretty excited about. Best of luck to everybody and thanks for all the support you've given me. I'll be watching everybody's final progress and hopefully get back to giving some input. And don't count me out. I'll be back for the next one and nothing will stop me from completing it then. :thumbsup: See ya.

Hey Matt -- very, very sorry to hear about all of the difficulties preventing your finishing this image during the Challenge, but, I am very glad you have plans to finish this very promising image. (And that you have the personal standards and vision to see it through to your standards.) It looks like it will be an absolutely terrific piece! I enjoyed the concept sketch at the beginning of course and had been waiting in anticipation for more -- looking forward now to seeing it finished in another thread perhaps, and, of course seeing your high calibere of work and personal standards in future challenges! Hope you have a good summer and are able to work through your present difficulties -- this is truly very, very promising professional quality work, as I hope you know! Cheers!

Thanks. The good news is that my wrist seems to be healing relatively well. Provided I stop overdoing it at work, of course. I have to learn when to say "That's enough. I'm done." This image will definitely be finished in its original form, but for now it's being "reincarnated" for lack of a better word. I've been expanding the world slightly and it's going to be used as the set of a music video for Jonathan Coulton's song, When You Go www.jonathancoulton.com/lyrics/when-you-go (http://www.jonathancoulton.com/lyrics/when-you-go). Our progress is irregularly updated in the Current Projects section of my website. www.mr-mobley.com (http://www.mr-mobley.com/). There's not a lot to show off as of yet, but it's coming together quite nicely.
