You're definitely my favorite head modeler, I'm inspiring to you and Renè Morel for my WIP head http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&postid=292047#post292047

It's amazing! I think it looks more like you gave catness to a human, not humanity to a cat. Is the character going to be a cat that looks like a person or a person that looks like a cat?

That is really cool, but I am 50/50 on the whole thing.

You wanted to give it humanity in which I think you succeeded, but in attempts to made it look too human and just a personal opinion of what I like and don't like, I think it looks a little silly, the nose specifically.

It's great, but I don't like it, I'd rather see a few less human qualities but still retain it's humanity... ah now we are getting all deep, hehe.

thank you all for feedbacks :)

Thank you thirdEye the texture of your head is great.I don't know if I can do it as much:) the body is in awaiting, I will finish it soon.

Glader:Humm... it take aproximatly one week, day and night to design and modeling it.If I shall have has to redo it,I shall put half fewer time.

The Time serpent:I think that he is already too animal,to make his teeth more sharper would risk to make him even more felin.

E.Z Schwartz:It is the person who looks like has a cat.

Skyraider3d: you're right,but i can still use texture to make dirty the cap.thank :)

very nice model stuzzi.. A thing that looks wrong tho, is the way the beard is pulled up towards the mouth in the morph.
Its like the polygons are stretched towards the mouth, and therefore stretching the beard.

But the rest is just amazing

stuzzi
12-16-2002, 11:57 AM
Good observation I totally agree with you,Soeren Nielsen
.

The beard is not streched it's just not snap to the chin yet. My priority was to morph the face,I did not pay attention has the beard. I shall take my time to make the beard which follows correctly the chin.

My comment would be about the nose ornament/jewelery. It looks like it is piercing the side of one nostril in a very soft, fleshy part of the skin. Given how top heavy it is I would expect a lot of sagging. It might make sense to modify it to be a little smaller, or have it braced in some way such that it does not look like it would tear right out of the skin.

I think on the way I can make him more charismatic,Maybe that a human's body is better. ::shrug:

Thank you slaughters,Indeed we should more feel the weight of the piercing, I should do some modifications. ;) the piercing start on a wide party of the nose, that should reduce the de stretching of the nose.

As pointed out The buzz, I believe that the canine of bottom are too long, the jaw can not close correctly. I should make them smaller. And enlarge as well those of the height:applause:

I think your wildcat is great because of it's humanity and yep, it's disturbing to see such a creature! I think cat eyes whould not put the model far away from your goal and I think they'd give more coherence... Maybe give it a try :D

For a modeling... no more tutorial... there's already a lot over the net.
personnely I don't see any interests, the techniK is the same, a bit different by users.
A good model finished is more interesting than another modeling BOX/Nurbs/spline tuts.

I think that if you added tufts of hair to his ears, more scruffy facial hair, and a droopy moustache he'd look much more feline and feral. Right now, he has the nose and mouth structure of a cat, but the rest of him is very human. I think a large part of that is because of the overall smoothness of the face; there isn't even stubble.

Excellent work, nevertheless. One of the better heads I've seen on this forum.

xynaria
12-21-2002, 03:07 AM
Great modelling as usual Stuzzi and as you say, great observation.
My only crit, and this is purely a personal preference type thing, is the 'seperration' on the base of the nose. I am taking this to be the area that would normally be pink on a cat and on which no hard edge would be visisble, but on your model it does read to me as a hard edge and as such distracts and overstates. :)

Damn its hard not to suck up to stuff like this....
Your face is astounding and beautifull, i cannot pretend to even have the talent to criticize it. However it strikes me as a human that has several catlike elements. Namely a very anglo facial proportion/slope and arrangement of the features. It looks great as it is, but if you wan't to emphasize the feline origings more, bring the mouth and nose forward slightly and flatten out the nose so it does not have such distinctly human depth. This doesn't need to be extreme however i think taking it just beyond the range of normal human proportions might make it nearly immediately acceptable but distinctively different.

Really you have worked out well man!

There might be a zillion modeling tutorials on the net, however carving out the topology of the mesh is only the first part of the process.

What I'm more interested in is how Stuzzi achieves this incredibly cool, 'soft' look to his faces. I've only seen such a look on René Morel's models, and he's - surprise - a college of Stuzzi, so I guess there's something we could learn from them. I know that observation is very important in character modeling, but I'm sure there are a few technical aspects as well; wether it's the modeling, the shaders or the post processing of the images.

So once again I'd like to ask the topic starter - Stuzzi, could you please tell us how you achieve this natural, soft look?

ThirdEye
12-21-2002, 01:45 PM
Well I can give you a maybe incomplete answer but I think I have understood which is their goal: attention + muscles + gravity. Most people model their heads following their mental idea of "head" but don't look at real head main features. I'm ultimating my first head http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&postid=304224#post304224 and I've learnt A LOT of things simply looking for hours at Renè Morel and Stuzzi models. These are IMHO the things that give life to their models:

1) great attention to detail in general and in the right places in particular : more details you add, more realistic the look

2) great attention to muscle flow and bones: they follow muscles when modeling payin attention to skull shape and human proportion, check this site for example, it's really useful: http://www.plasticsurgery.am/Rhino/

3) great attention to gravity: skin and flesh are subjected to gravity, the Stuzzi soft look is achieved with a great precision moving points and a great attention to how skin and flesh move on the head bones.

I hope it helps. Just my 2 cents

THANK U ALL!!

"One of the better heads you've seen"?thx a lot.Post my work is new for me..i used to work in the "dark side".so what u said seems to be surnatural

When poeple ask me a larger size render,i thought that they kidding me!!are you serious? :surprised

Maybe you right timothyD...I'll had some moustache. However The large part of "human side",is important.I want poeple imagine Shagga's history. If he's too animal,he'll become boring. The balance of humanity and animality is right.Otherwise people are not going to ask all these questions:What's his parent's look like?Has he undergoes genetique modification? As regards the smoothness of the face, the texture will be important to determine the rest.

Yeahh!xynaria i totaly agree with you!Shagga has no texture,i just assign different shaders to groups of poly,to help me.So the boudaries are hard.but in futur it will be arrange.

hum..goon,in theory you're right.Someone told me to make a cat ears.i'll try then i see that it not fit well on him.I must adapt each particularities. For instance, the top of the nose need to be (approximatively)like a human one to fit with the eyebrows and forehead. To ignore those rules is dangerous for the harmony of this face.

3dfArtist,you try to kidding me,nobody can beat ILM crew!!

CarlCampbell,i dont stay purple, lol. He looks too bad i try yo Make him more kind ;)

vision, ouais ta raison jdevrai repousser un chouwwa 2,3 points,je suis rester trop lgtps dessus,je n'ai plus asser de recul dessus, merci!

Laa-Yosh,Indeed i guess that www.amazonsoul.com is a good source of inspiration for a lot of artists.
Max5 got a nice renderer.I was crying when test the maya render. The shader is just a phong for "skin" and oren nayar blinn for "cloth".I use photoshop just to add my logo and the bar.The Dof and grain is made with the rendering effect. This is the scanline render..that's all.

Among the artist i meet, they start their carriers after seen star wars movies. They begin by asking for which soft they are going to use, and get lost in this debate.Their main preocupation is teknik. So they are too busy to cut and extrude to know what they really do!BIG MISTAKE!I prefer to spend time on illustrator and sculpting web site.According to me,you're modelling will be bad if the artistic sensiblity is bad, even if you are a good modeler.the robota teaser would not be also beautiful without Doug's genius.

sorry for my english :hmm:

I appreciate your critics,very instructiv!!:wavey:

You know it's not even so much that you are one of the best modelers I have seen , from reading your posts you seem like a really cool and funny guy ... I wish you a lot of success ...this is a beautiful model , my next hope is to see a full model with poses like Steven Stahlbergs models ..that would be awesome . That lady you made with the beautiful head piece was something I was hoping you would finish..maybe someday

Stuzzi, I'm really speechless since all the compliments have been said. So, I think adding another 'wow', 'great', or 'awesome' won't do much difference.

All I can say that your work is the kind of work that makes me motivated to keep pushing myself forward, and at the same time it makes my goals seem so far, if you know how that feels like :)

Keep up the great work (seems like just one nanometer to perfection to me), you're an inspiration to many people like me!

stuzzi
12-26-2002, 06:45 PM
Your goal ain't so far.however my work is far to be "one nanometer"to perfection.:hmm:

Could we please see a movie of your facial animation for Shagga. (man you dont want an Australian saying that name) Me being one of course. That is what we nickname man gigaloes. They Shag-A-Lot.

I am doing research into displacement map blending for facial Animation and would really appreciate the inspiration. Cheers!
