Llynna
03-01-2006, 08:47 PM
here we go, after having something to eat, i will try to explain you WHY i made a sketch of a mirror. at least im going to try, if its totally confusing just let me know.

she was sitting there for dont know how long, the rooms around here slowly crumbled, the servants turned to ghosts. only starring at the mirror without looking she stared with a stoic face until something in her reawakened.

thats where we start.... at the beginning of the journey to find herself and overcome the fear inside, she is going into the dark secrets of the mirror. a whole new world is opening up for her, scary, dark but still there is beauty to find there. a bunch of weird creatures, the fearful queen mistress of ice and fearful ruler of the mirror world.

the whole atmosphere is to be dark, in a bluish colourscheme. figures are to wear baroque like dresses and the architecture will have its touches of it too but combined with modern elements like tattoos, piercings and some stuff like that. hm well you can say in a bit of a gothic style (now who would have guessed that coming from me :D)

hopefully is was helpful to get a rough idea of my concept. any crit you have would be really helpful and appriciated, please be honest with me, i can live with it :) thx in advance fellows

I like the idea... and the visuals, so far!! If I read the rules right, your not going to have text to explain her journey... so I'd recommend doing whatever you have to to make the concept clear.

Good luck!!

Oh.. and if you have a moment, come visit with my friends: the local goths. (http://detroitgothic.net)

Llynna
03-01-2006, 10:57 PM
you read the rules right, you dont really have to write text but a story behind it is a must and at the beginning its kinda nice to explain it properly to people so they can give you some hints if you drift away in your painting or give better directions to you. or simply for you to point ot what you really are up to. at least for me it helps a lot!

visited the side and must say they are all the same around the world *g* and i seem to be the only one who isnt into this black/ purple style. i am for more nice white and clean sites with a nice designs and without tombstones!

hi there, the idea is great,i think you can push it further,we need to add depth,i had this idea that maybe u could do a bunch of lone mirrors shooting off into the bg *sum perspective* and her sitting at one.u know...like a giant forest of mirrors.

complex idea but i think u can do it,good luck! but anyway lets see how it goes.

yes yes dear people^^

was away at my parents and had to work there, so no time for sketching just work to be done and yesterday well....... i was occupied celebrating my birthday. but i will begin to sketch this instant,, so expet an update in the next couple of hours.

@laurent: from whom do i get help if you two "help" me ;) by the way i bought an french magazine yesterday at the trainstation, called c&g style with some great reference in it and the saleswoman even gave it to me 4 euros cheeper *g*

@vahn: really o.O must be the people i hang around with too much of the bombenleger kind *g*

@MikeTheHunter: thx :)

@NOOB!: hey, that means you began your challenge too? will have a look at your thread ;). this mirror is not the way it will be in the whole composition, but maybe you are right about bringing some nice perspective in. we will see.

@ailsa: sascha said i can state that its his fault ;). will get back to sketching now and will have a look at what you have done these last few days.

im not really productive today, nothing seems to come off right somehow.... this is the only thing near enaugh to the picture in my head.

it shows her going through the mirror, taking one last look back. in this composition you would see more of what is behind the mirror, not much of the mirror itself.

i want to post some other composition soon , from a more far off point of view.

well, off for another one, more far off angle. on the right half of the painting it would be as if the two worlds are melting.

what do you think? which one do you like ebtter?

I like this composition a lot Britta.

Nice Britta, but actually liek the composition of the first pose better. Feels a bit more personal to the viewer, and has a nicer close feel.

Llynna
03-09-2006, 02:17 PM
@ego: thank you ego for your fast reply, so you like this one better than the previous? maybe i should just work on both of them a bit longer.

@martin: thats true with the personal feeling, im not sure to go for that but for the story it would be essential to establish a more personal feeling. but i think for the challenge it should be more of a monumental feel, but maybe the monumental thing can be the feelings shown *thinks*. you gave me something to think over....

artvandeley
03-09-2006, 02:53 PM
Hi Britta, i think you should go for the first one, adding a little more space but not as much as in the second. In the 1st one, the mirror could be a hard to read, you should reveal more of it.
Plus, which is even more important, i love those old frames *hrrhrr*

Nice concept you got there, really worth to work on. I still got problems understanding the story though just by looking at the picture. Keep in mind that it should be perfectly clear what´s going on without any additional explanations. Just an idea that accured: How about showing her mirrored ego taking her by the hand into her world. Half tempted, half afraid she remains uncertain but willing to follow into the dark. Hm,o.k., sounds pathetic

Anyway, just make sure that even someone like me will get the full story.

Keep the ideas coming!

Love the first concept (last page) and this one. So my suggestion is as follows, use the second concept but crop about 5% off the left side and about 25% on the right and add a little to the top. You could use the extra space on the top to add a little more to the mirror or just a nasty bg :) The first one has a great intimate feel and you should work to keep that (IMO) and one way to do that would be to extend the canvas a little (on concept one, or crop on concept 2) so you can show a little more of your epic mirror world :)

Llynna
03-10-2006, 09:37 AM
@artvandeley: see i added some place on the first one, more mirror for everyone ;). glad you like the mirror design. its really appriciated that you took so much time in thinking and writing me a reply :D

you are right about the story and the actual oic, but i wanted to lay down the composition first, cause that is my wear point and i tend to begin to draw without it and make a mess.....

actually, you got me a great idea :D. what you dont know yet is that she really has a counterpart who could drag her :). you gave me an excuse to put her in there too *yay*. i will work on that idea and i really think that will make it all more clear.

ok, another update for tonight, i changed the composition a bit and gave the mirror a bit more space by adding a bit of length to top and bottom. the resolutions given at the instuctions arent that binding, arent they? in this composition the image would be around 2600*4600.

well, this flightly white things on her are ment to be spiderwebs. she will be a bit covered in them, breaking them by going through the mirror. helped by some creatures i need to design, maybe some ice elementals or such. need to work on that now.

Your concept is really worth it.

Adding some space to the canvas was a good idea, i also like the colors and values you used, building a bright focus on the woman.

@enialadam: hopefully one day i will get there to have a real proper me style^^. am glad you like it though :)

@artvandeley: :) thanks for your concern, i just need to overcome my natural lazyness and my periods of i cant paint anything.... and my drive to screw up images by going into detail too soon without finishing the whole composition, including lightning and colors. must admit thats my real week point.......

@shake: thx buddy :) means a lot to me, i always adore your costume designs. i love playing with costumes, so much fun *g*.

@mac_andre: will be going into more detail soon, when i finally got the other person on the image, there will be a whole bush of details, including litterl critters and stuff.

und glück kann ich gebrauchen, oder eher immer wieder eine ermahnung nicht aufzugeben

an update this time around with the second person on the image, the mirror queen who has a bit of an ice element to her. freezing all the things or rather conserving them.

what do you think?

seeing as its a mirror one would think there would be something of the sort there. i really only have one suggestion for you... it would be nice if you create more of an environment around the mirror or gateway it would defiantly help with a nicer comp.

another pose for the queen, more backward movement to emphasize the movement in of the other person.

need to work on the light next, some greyscale work to do.

hey dear people, some sign that im alive and working on this. i just was absend a few days, i was visiting some fellow cg talkers at the weekend ailsa and urgaffel and we went to the caravaggio exhibition in amsterdam which was just so awesome.

i began colouring and am now seperating all things to seperate layers. i also began a painting of the queen to get a better understanding of her.

The left person will have a monitor lizard tattoo on her back, everybody has a dragon so i decided to go with the earthly variant of this (and i love monitor lizards :) ).

hopefully will be able to update later today too. just have to pay my lovely institute of learning a quick visit ;)

i think ive got some personal replies open, i will do that when i come back.

Llynna
04-17-2006, 03:06 AM
well.......... sorry for the late answers and updates but due to easter ive got some family buisiness to attend and other stuff :)

as you may see (hopefully) ive given it another twist again. its moving a bit to surreal..... but i wanted to do this at first too, but could never work up the courage to try and do something more out of the angle.

now that i did im really amazed of the prospect. i never was really satisfied of the icequeen in the image as for now. she is a real major part of the whole thing. in my opinion this really fits her role in it all and does emphazise with the journey character. you know like this hughe overwhelming element in the painting you have to overcome.

@slav: thanks :) i think its a nice compliment if someone is able to look at my humble image for 30 minutes :).

@mac andre: wow.... thats such an awesome photo :) made me reconsider giving her the
dark red/black hair and going for my natural auburn haircolour with this one. you were right, i hate doing backs and i am ever in need of good refs for that. i swore to me after an image of mine i called birdqueen to never do a back painting again well...

@elgrozni: thank you very much, although i think i need to work on it, its shouldnt be all cute^^

@simonas: in fact im doing that atm. doing some serious pencil work and heading life painting and acrylics again.

@OliveBeard: oh, i never do real linearts........ i totally suck at that, im really trying to for this one, to do the whole comp first, but im really struggling with it.

jeromoo: you may consider it kind of an alice in wonderland theme. it is a bit different indeed but somehow its got similarities. if i can bring up the nerve and courage it will be a whole series of paintings. i got them in my head.... but if i can bring them out, just dont know.
you are right about the designs, im in love with costumes and beautiful women^^

@oceanbluesky: thank you for your support and reply to my image :) its really appreciated and your comments about the composition are encouraging because this is my weakest point. im always struggling with it, thats why i mostly never finish an image.

@individium: hm, im sorry but i dont think i will put her in... but i can tell you that i made a basic layout for her own painting, the flying character i mean, even worked at it a bit. i really like her too. i am sketching out some suportive little critters and puppets who are carrying the trail of the skirt and some stuff.

Hello Britta (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=167411);
Man do I hate starting so late on a thread of someone popular.. it is just so much reading material!
And so many pages!

Firstly I have to say that I loved the visuals that was potential to come out of your concept idea when I first read through it.

Originally Posted by Britta (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=167411):
here we go, after having something to eat, i will try to explain you WHY i made a sketch of a mirror. at least im going to try, if its totally confusing just let me know.

she was sitting there for dont know how long, the rooms around here slowly crumbled, the servants turned to ghosts. only starring at the mirror without looking she stared with a stoic face until something in her reawakened.

thats where we start.... at the beginning of the journey to find herself and overcome the fear inside, she is going into the dark secrets of the mirror. a whole new world is opening up for her, scary, dark but still there is beauty to find there. a bunch of weird creatures, the fearful queen mistress of ice and fearful ruler of the mirror world.

the whole atmosphere is to be dark, in a bluish colourscheme. figures are to wear baroque like dresses and the architecture will have its touches of it too but combined with modern elements like tattoos, piercings and some stuff like that. hm well you can say in a bit of a gothic style (now who would have guessed that coming from me :D)

hopefully is was helpful to get a rough idea of my concept. any crit you have would be really helpful and appriciated, please be honest with me, i can live with it :) thx in advance fellows

And I agree with the thoughts of many on how great the dress and the ladies pose stands.
Would you mind though; if I be my usual annoying self, and put in a variety of ideas that struck me as I skimmed through your thread?

Firstly I can't remove the image of the first developed duo-colour sketch of your mirror (This one => Mirror (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showpost.php?p=3292105&postcount=34))... and was wondering if it would not be possible for you integrate the flow of the white chalk lines into your final?
Such as in the form of flowing mist or drapery?... Like in the manner the whites you have there are like a series of fine lace pouring along the curvatures of what ever it is to cover.

Sorry... but it all looked so poetic and fitting to your theme in target... I couldn't let that one pass by without asking or offering.

The second one is related to your latest update sets...
But maybe it is better to explain it through THIS (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showpost.php?p=3459971&postcount=118) update.
I LOVE the new addition here... the hand already having her in her grasp... already in control or power to a limited point.
But I also thought that you would have an easier time with the judges, if you would have the hands grab out from inside the mirror. In fact, to (As it is already such in that particular update) blend the whole head of the Queen and have the hands reach for a grab... again all blended in an impossible pose.

I can not state any "poetic" reasons this time for my suggestion, but I have to insist that it will add more a power to the "journey" bit of it... That it will include us in understanding that the passage is in front of her, and that it starts now... without having to read a story.
Because as sad as it is; Marc (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=30984) has made a good point on His Post (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showpost.php?p=3291640&postcount=31)

All that said, it may be hard for me to convince you that I actually liked what you have done and where you are possibly going to be heading to.
But I have to insist that it apparently struck me strong enough for me to feel a little something extra in each of its steps. And I would not spare this much time nor emotion on something I didn't feel to be important enough.

So what ever I said or advised... shall you go with any of them or not... I still think that you can't do anything wrong with what you are already going for... it is a very potential piece of work... and you are doing a great job on it!

Nooow WORK :wip:

And I agree with the thoughts of many on how great the dress and the ladies pose stands.
Would you mind though; if I be my usual annoying self, and put in a variety of ideas that struck me as I skimmed through your thread?

definetly! every bit of input is welcome and keeps me working, cause im always struggling with me and my composition and i dont think you got an annoying self. its always welcome to state honest criticism, i really can stand it :)

Firstly I can't remove the image of the first developed duo-colour sketch of your mirror (This one => Mirror (showpost.php?p=3292105&postcount=34))... and was wondering if it would not be possible for you integrate the flow of the white chalk lines into your final?
Such as in the form of flowing mist or drapery?... Like in the manner the whites you have there are like a series of fine lace pouring along the curvatures of what ever it is to cover.

indeed this would be possible and it is planned in some points. it will take the form of snow or ice but maybe i will consider the drapery suggestion, that has some great potential. im just lazy working on the background and in sketching in all the elements i ahve in mind. really got to learn how to do that.

But maybe it is better to explain it through THIS (showpost.php?p=3459971&postcount=118) update.
I LOVE the new addition here... the hand already having her in her grasp... already in control or power to a limited point.

so you think the first hands were a better choice? its just that this position is not possible in the real world and somehow the hands themselves looked a bit odd to me.

im now trying to get off of her because im into highly detailing her at the moment and add some critters for her support. hopefully i will be able to show you something in 2 hours or so.

again thank you VERY much . your input was very helpful and i will reconsider some things i did and will see if i can make the journey better visible to the viewer.

It's coming along splendidly! I think her neck seems somehow amputated and moved over to the right a bit too much, if you just moved that one area upwards a bit and over to the left, it'd suit the pose a bit better, just my thoughts anyway, you know how I am. :D I love the color scheme you picked, very evocative. If I were you, I'd try and use a ref for her face, that angle is difficult to draw.

Hi Britte, just comng to be ashamed here in your thread as I've not visited so far! I love the concept you've come up with, and your early sketches show some real promise! I'd definitely agree with paperclip about using reference for her pose and face if you can find something, it will make the piece even more amazing! The line of her jaw seems a little off, it should slant down more towards her chest, rather than towards her lips, unless she's craning her chin out. I preferred her hand stretched out, it looked more like she was venturing into the mirror, and on more of a journey.

I love the big hands, they look like they're straight out of a old master's piece. I'd be tempted to put some more saturated colours into her skintones over the fleshier parts, like her cheeks, shoulders, and perhaps go for a more saturated shadow colour, if your highlights are going to stay cool. Linda Bergkvists thoughts on skintones is a really handy guide if you need any tips, (http://www.furiae.com/index.php?view=gallery - click on tutorials and thoughts on skintones) - though you've more than likely seen it!

Can't wait to see the lady in context, keep up the good work!

Llynna
05-10-2006, 05:26 PM
hey sam :)

i have some reference for her, maybe i should look at them more constantly. im just refilling my digicam batteries and then i will make some more ref photos for the head, it really may be that i incidentally put my chin forward in the last one....

thanks for the link to lindas tut, of course i know it. its a weird habti of mine to go from really desaturated colours on the skin to more saturated tones.

sadly i had to remove the lady from the whole scene for detailing because my mashine cant handle it otherwise -.-.

i was a bit lazy this afternoon, it was so nice and sunny and i got sunburned in 20 minutes again *screw my skin*.

I agree that the anatomical approach for such a scene would not be possible. But when you consider the story telling ability of such a feature… I think most would read what is told more than anything else.

You shall of course have to find a way to feed it to the viewer as best as you can. One could suggest a “Genie” approach… or a way a ghost would bend and flop… or just make them completely separate images… one of a head… blended into the decors. The other the hands... blended into the over flooding frost or lace.
Shall you notice I had in fact even offered the hands coming from INSIDE the mirror!

But my apologies were not exactly for the mirror…

Your figure;
They were more for the stance of your figure. Yes I understand English and I definitely understand what “finally set for a pose and am really satisfied with it.” Means…
But there were some things in that pose that lacked the particular ‘ability’ your earlier sketches had…

I did three quick sketches that might bring my point better:

http://users.telenet.be/Black.D.Greatest/Temp/ForBritta.jpg

I know the are not perfect.. and most possibly not proportional.. But I had to use a mouse since I didn’t want to go through the trouble of scanning and then posting. And it is not as easy as a pen and paper.
And my plan was more through hoping that you would get the idea rather than take them directly as a reference.

Here I tried to show you three possible poses where the model can remain looking at just about the same area you wished to have her look at...

In the middle I sampled a model that has about the ability to look at the same point by forcing her body to the limits of her neck.
The one on the images right is again forcing her neck to her limits (The first girl)… but is not able to look at the same point. She has to do the rest with her eyes because her neck will not permit her to rotate any further without twisting from her back as well. This particular character holds the similar stance as yours…
The one on the images left is looking at about the same place and has not had a need to lock her neck. She can look even more back.

The problem here is than that your vertebral column bends sort of inhumanly….especially at her neck. As flexible as it may seem: Our neck can do a turn only so much. I agree that the atlas bone does most of the bending… but to be able to turn back so much… you would have to break it sort of.

What I think has happened is that you kept onto your pose of the earlier ketches (Who wouldn’t? she is breath taking) and included a change for the torso… but they just didn’t build on top of each other correctly.

You’ll better notice what I mean if you look only at the neck of your lady.

I hope you still don’t hate me.

How the hell did I loose my subscription to this thread? ...

Britta, nice concept you have there!
You have a nice pose for the character, she looks a bit out of balance though.
Maybe try to adjust her feet. Black did some interesting sketches too.

hey, now I'm subscribed again :)

i hate that picture of Sora so much, i want to kill that kid.

but yeah great job so far on the female.

Id follow what Blackdidthis on the female though, his figures could definetly influence/help yours, especially the middle.

but very nice, cool-feeling painting you got going =)

hm.......... ok people im deadly tired today so this may get a bit confused.

first to say, all i really appreciate your effort in giving advise :)

i was really stunned this morning to see all the replies here (for whom i didnt get a notification email by the way, it seems that i lost the subscribtion for my own thread o.O).

first of all i want to share a ref photo with you guys

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b269/Llynna/5599619.jpg

so you see the necktwist is possibel, though it needs some tweaking on my face. there is something off with the chin area.

Black: Thanks so much for the in depth review, really sweet of you to do these sketches for me. They don't quite fit my vision for the painting, but again, Thanks! The idea is, that she is turning away from what lies beyond her and is turning her back on it.

im considering the hands though, but i just find them much more graceful this way..... we will see, i will grab my sketchbook now, go out in the sun and think about it and get sunburned ;)

@marlon: heh, i lost my subscription to this thread too and its my own ;) so no worries. but why on earth did you quote this creepy creature............. to remind of putting my creatures finally in?

adonhis: i agree with you on sora, so creepy

thank you for your suggestions and reply :). i wont really follow the middle sketch of black, but i may consider some otehr things he said but will focus on finishing it on time. since my time is a bit limited due to important university essays and courses i wont have the time to do all things over and over and over.

catch you all later :)

Hi Llynna

You concept is cool. It has a spookey feel to it. I'm afraid I don't have any in depth crits like Black. I'll wait for your next update.

Thanks for dropping by my thread.

ok, since i cant sleep im considering some things the people pointed out to me over the last day.

as you can see i made myself a rasta for the composition. the thinking isnt nearly finished but i think it works well this way and has more of the journey feeling.

Hi, Llynna!

I think you have a nice iconic composition here which will work well.

You flipped your work several times, just make sure the final image will depict the figure travelling from left to right since this is the direction of "moving on" in the western culture. Sorry, if this was saif by others before.

Also try not to place the brightest spot of the painting at the bottom where nothing happens ( I refer to a color composition sketch you posted before). That distracts form the figure and the action.

The mirror is a good theme for a jouney. "Through the looking glass" into another dimension or into the own psyche... that's cool.

Viel Erfolg bei den weiteren Arbeiten und lass Dich nicht ablenken. Dein derzeitiges Konzept ist so ziemlich klasse und Du solltest es ausarbeiten!

Hey Britta :)

Taking me a while to read through all I've missed on your thread hon, but thought I would drop in and say keep at it because I love your idea and I know you can do something great. Some great advice given there from Black too!

@EdP-Art: thank you, you can expect some update with colors today in the evening or so.

@digital decoy: :) most of the times im only flipping to look for mistakes i made and gain another look at the picture. i will submit the final image in the left to right direction. although the other way round works for me too somehow, may be cause im left handed, somebody once told it makes a difference wether you are right or left handed.

thats a good point with the brightest point of the picture. i will place the brightest point of the painting where her hand meets the mirror now, to gie impact to this gesture.

@Ailsa: hey hon :) great to see you around here again :) im working, im working, you can count on that, promised therry a great update due to sunday evening.

Oooh, nice updates so far! I like the mirror, but it doesn't really look like a mirror with the pearly marble effect- it looks more like pearly marble.

I think mirrors are usually dark and shadowy, showing reflections of, in your case, what could have been and what will be...on the other side of the mirror is the other side of the intellect that you're trying to grasp, but not quite bring over. I guess what I'm saying here is that the mirror seems a little too bright and patterned??

Weitergehen...immer!

Hi Britta,
The one comment I want to make is I'm a little unclear what the narrative here is (oh sure, I could probably read the thread to find out but I'm much to lazy for that). What's the story you are trying to tell? Is it clear to the audience what's happening? I think you'll pull off the technical part just fine, I'm just putting some food for thought in your head. I'll keep checking in on this to see how it progresses. :) Good luck!

Hallo!

Sorry for the non-german speaking audience, I just felt like giving some feedback in my mother tongue. Here's a synopsis:
