I'm just about to start work on my short film and I've run into a bit of a problem regarding what resolution to render at.

I intend on authoring the film to DVD and eventually, I would like to submit it to film festivals. I've heard that many of the new films coming out for festivals are being shown in HD format; however, I haven't come across any infomation that says whether or not standard DVDs can support HD content.

If anyone has any info about this subject (or if you can point me in some direction), I'd greatly appreciate it.

I'm pretty sure regular DVD doesn't support HD, unless you save it as a file. But they woul dhvae to run it off of a computer, and the computer has to be fast enough to save the files. There is an HD tape format, DVHS, but I know nothing about it. Maybe thats what they use... In about a month, HD DVD will be available... but i think it will be a while til it is standard..

Standard DVD's cannot support HD unless it is encoded as a file in Windows Media 9 or H.264 (quicktime). In which case it would have to be played of a computer.

Festivals might actually be using tape such as HDCAM, HDCAM-SR, or D5 (panasonic).

In any case your best bet is to render out as an Image sequence. Then you can take it to a dubbing house to have it mastered to HD Tape. You could also render out versions of it in H.264 and WM9. Then you will have all your bases covered.

Yeah, that makes sense (it's kinda what I thought, anyways).
Thanks for the info.

Last week we had a presentation from Kodak and the've used our BARCO DP100 (i'm a projectionist and we have 3 HD film projectors). For the content they used a HDCAM betaplayer. Perfect quality!

Thats my advice...
