View Full Version : Dinosaur egg
archeo 02-26-2006, 08:04 AM I all,
I am actualy working on a reconstruction of a dinosaur egg. In 1993, a nest was found at Paimogo (Portugal),by O. Mateus (Dinosaurs of Portugal, M T Antunes, O. Mateus / C.R. Paleovol 2 (2003) 77-95), with arond one hundred theropod eggs. Some contain embryonic bones. These are some of the oldest ever found (Late Jurassic).
My reference is in the attachments (the left drawing is from S. Mateus and the right is mine) and the modeling is in progress.

The modeling is ended (with cinema 4D). I begin to unfold the UV with Wing3D

UVmapping is ended and I have had some details with Zbrush.

What a nice project! Are you going to model the skeleton too?
Could be cool.

Great work are you going to texture it? Do you know what kind of theropod it is in the eggs? Teh front claws look a bit funny but I really don't know so I will nto commit on that. I am a big fan of modeling dinosaurs. They have a certain mystry to them. Also they are still grounded in reality. A combination I find interesting. Also since noone really knows their colors then it is up to you to interpret what it could possibly be. Considering birds and reptiles are amongst the most colorful creatures on the planet. I am a big fan of modeling dino's.

Gunilla : modelling the skeleton? ouch! too long to do that.
Dann-O : texturing and boning the model is in my project. For the color and the texture of the skin I have scanned the skin leg of a guinea-fowl : a mix of orange and black on this (delicious :-)) ) specimen.

Nice little project. Great work. You seem to work pretty fast, too.
It looks like an allosaur relative. I don't rememember what late Jurassic animals were in that part of the world, though, so I could be wrong.

Yes it is an allosaurid form : a Lourinhanosaurus. The adult look like a little allosaur (approximatively half in lenght).

I see you use ZBrush and C4D. How easy is that workflow? I've debated buying ZBrush, but going back and forth alwyas looked like a hassle.

Are you using C4D 8 or 9? The worflow is better with C4D 9.5 and sub polygone displacement, no need of hypernurb and the render is very fast. I am not a current user of Zbrush but sometime I use the computer of my sun and he explane me how using it.

I'm using v9.5.
Doing dinosaurs myself, too. In the middle of doing a stegosaurus. I think it's going to be a little tricky adding the plates because they are not symmetrical. I'll have to finish the base model, take it out of symmetry mode and then somehow add the plates.
I've seen your other work. Very nice stuff. I love anything dinosaur!

If you are using 9.5 you can buy Zbrush. To put the plates of the stegosaure create 2 splines using your actual geometrie and align your plates using the tag "align along spline". Like this it is very easy and you can tweak the position as you want.

Thanks for the spline tip. I'll give that a try.

I have just ended texturing the animal. Very difficult for the bump map on the legs and the head.

Nice textureing good to see you did nto go to the Steven Speilberg all dinosaurs are grey school. Nice work

The egg and the disssection. I will play the model : a hatching scene in few times.

Great pic would like to see it bigger and maybe put a bump map on the egg.

Looking good!
Must have been tough folding him up in there and getting good deformations.
