I see a lot of people doing some very artistic stuff with it but, is it possible to have references on planes like I would do with any other 3d software?

Take a look at my Reference Image (http://206.145.80.239/zbc/showthread.php?t=26585) plugin posted at ZBC. It will do some of what you want.
