View Full Version : ram or mHz ?!?!?
igor popovic 12-13-2002, 01:20 AM I'm currently doing a scene where i've designed a loft/appartment with the basic interior object (couches, tables, lights etc.)
right now max seems to be slowing down, its taking longer and longer for it to do any sorts of actions, so i'm thinking of upgrading my system.
right now i have a 900mhz amd, with a 256mb ddr ram, and a 64mb ddr nVidia video card...i'm wondering what i should buy first so that my max interface becomes faster at updating the scene, or rete of frame...i hope you guys understand what i am asking.
thanks in advance

I think ram.
i also have 256 ram but everybody told me that it's consider low and i should have a minimum of 500 mb.
i also have 2.2 giga of mhz and i don't think it has much of affect like the ram
RAM is what matters when the computer is processing. You work off your RAm not your HD. Your HD is simply a storage for files once your computer turns off. You also might want to control Windows Paging file to allow more use of RAM. You should have a minimum of 512Mb if not up to 1gb. Your video card also can help, especially if it has multi-hreading to the max. Processor speed helps but is not the end all. The best configuration is to make sure your RAM, M-Board, and Processor are all running the same bus speed. Thats where most people screw up their systems and why it might be running slower than it should. But thats just my take and don't quote me :)

thanks guys!
how would i go about changing the bus speed, because that might be the problem, since i put my system togheter by myself i probably forgot about the bus speed!
Either of two ways, based on your m-board, either a jumper or through your bios. Make sure all your hardware can handle the speed. You want to be at 133Mhz ideally.

looks like you got enough advice on the upgrade
i need one too im still running my
athalon 1.2 and only 384 pc2100 with a gf2 lol
to save your system from getting so swamped(viewports) can always just model one thing at a time put it in plane and have it show as a box rather than mesh
donno how many people actually use it but its a good thing to use with hi poly counts

Indeed, the box instead of a mesh is a live saver.
You could also model a very low poly version of it, and just use the high poly when you do your final render.

64mb ddr nVidia which card? Which version of max? Ask this question at the hardware board here with exact detail. Hope your nvidia is not MX.

yeah making a low poly version and having the hi poly count hidden but renderable is always a good method too
i do that when making terrain
use 150 segs for viewport but render mesh has god knows how many lol..like 1000 on 2 itterations
lots of good tricks though
but on my opinion if you want to upgrade then upgrade your CPU for faster render times
since video is only goona give you smoother viewports
and there are tricks liek we mentioned for saving fps in viewports
Also if you have a modifier stack thats big, if you put an edit mesh on the top of the stack it will improve your ability to "manuver" in your current scene.

how much difference does mhz make for rendering? i thought the video card operated mostly through renders! I have a Nvidia Geforce 2mx, 64mb ddr ram
dvornik:why, what is wrong with the mx?:hmm:

with your video card being the mx, means its slow ;) If your computer is having a hard time showing things fast in the viewport, its definately your videocard holding you back. I have a GF2mx and it can be such a pain in the kisser. I am going the way of the new FX soon, so those days will be over!:applause:

ok, so while we're on the theme of video cards..
what is the best video card, would you guys say, and be money conscious:rolleyes: cuz some of us are students!

Geforce 4 Ti4600 or Ti4200. 4200 is cheaper, 4200 is, I think about $180, and 4600 around $220 I think.
