What do you mean? How to render out an alpha channel in Maya or how to apply one to a material?

If your doing it thourgh a UV map, which I assume you are, just apply a the file image (a black and white picture of your alpha matte) to the transparency in the material editor. If you need more specifics just let me know.

...
So you can't just use the alpha from the image file like in max?You have to have a separate file? weird. I would have guessed A/W would have incorporated that.
Thanks Whirlwind :D

you just have to pipe the alpha out into the transparency of your shading network. it takes like 1/2 of one second and it's even possible to automate it or even alter Maya to automatically do it whenever a texture is added via MEL.

I created a nurbs plane and applied a black color and transparency to represent hair strands. I created a nurbs ball behind this plane. I have a single directional light pointing. I can see the ball through the plane but there's no hair stripes shadows falling on the ball. Raytrace shadow on the light is enabled. How do I fix this?
Also, is this a good way to make a hair? It's pretty simple. I want to get that hair shine. However, the only shine I see is a halo on the plane and not on the individual hair strands.
