View Full Version : Ray-O-Matic sci-fi gun for space trucker.
SHEPEIRO 02-24-2006, 03:11 PM hey there folks, due to Mod work, and getting my web site up and running i havent had much time for personnel projects, but i had a spare moment last night and decided to start a weapon for my space trucker (5200 tris with a 1024* colour and normal, havent done spec yet)

excuse the pose?!
anyway im going for a 50s style sci-fi look with the plan to create a first person model (around 3000 tris and a 1024* map) and a 3rd person(scalled down stats, probably -1000 tris and a 512* map)
so far i have started on the high poly which i will bake down onto the lower res versions, i should be able to keep the colour and spec (just down sized but will do new normals)

Nada noting, ow well will update in a bit.
really need a hand on those texture sizes/poly counts for weapons in a standard modern FPS, something like BF2 or HL2

ok heres a little update, finished th ehigh poly model gave it a simple colour scheme, but im gaonna change it so that the ridge dictates a two tone orange and white ting. erm bad description.

Looking really good. My only crit would be the handle. The back of it looks too sharp to hold the gun comfortably. Other than that, it's fantastic. Really captures the feel of the old Flash Gordon series'.

thnxs for the replywell ive softened the top part of the grip where the thumb will go across, but the sharpness will stay because it looks better, and i dont have to hold it. ha. well i looked at quite a bit of 50s style kitchen ware to design this and i think alot of stuff then was made for style rather than practicallity so theres me reasoning.

Looking great!
I'd love to see him squinting his eyes a bit, getting ready to squeeze that trigger, showing more emotion and personality.
Also a double-handed grip might be more expressive, and more in keeping with his shooting-range gear.
I'd like to see better lighting, a couple fill lights and a rim light would really bring out the nice texture work.
If the bkg is going to be plain, you might as well put him on a flat surface that fades out into a lighter color, not black. Think of those photo-studio shots where they have the floor that curves up into the wall, so you don't see a hard horizon. Keeps the attention focussed on the character, and it's easy to make!

i think your right about the expression on his face would add alot, dont know how well he'll deform i didnt really design him for a face rig =-z its a while since i modelled this guy, so ill have to look into it.
two handed grip, yeah good thinking.
the background/lighting setup was a late night "place holder" which hasnt been propperly done over yet.i have some metal pipe stuctures that i might have him infront of instead.
thanks for the crits
