View Full Version : => A modeling & texturing reel by Jisung <=
Rjays 02-22-2006, 11:35 AM Hi~ all
here's my demo reel I just finished,
and today is officially the last day at school.
It's been a great year at VFS and I really appreciate that this school gave me a chance to start CG and also 3d55 talented people inspired me a lot.
I'll be looking for a job and hopefully looking forward to working as a modeler (or a texturer).
Comments and crits are always appreciated.
Have a nice one.

wow... nice reel. I especially liked the grim reaper at the beginning, (even close up he looks 100% real).
Good job.
Oh yeah and one more thing: and this is more of an after thought. If you are going for a modeling job you may want to add in the wireframes for these. But you don't have to add them in if you don't want to, I think it stands out as it is.
My bad you have them all in there except for the grim reaper that is why I didn't see it.
Good job again.

very solid reeel dude, i like the skim on the grim!
Nice textures and pretty good modeling, thought the skirt on the grim could be more interesting and detailed to balance everything thats goin on in the body.
Best of luck

redoctober - I really appreciate you helped me a lot
JBoskma - Thanks man, I just re-rendered out the eyes separately and it's really nice somebody noticed that. Your concept drawing of gorilla looking guy is so much promising, I can't wait to see how you execute it.
Have you learned any kind of drawing before? just curious

thanks dude. I like drawing, and just have been doing it for a while. I didn't attend fine art school, if that's what you mean. I got to VFS straight out of high school. Steven has been a big help for me though. He showed me a few simple tricks that made my drawings a lot better :)

Jisung,
You know, I keep trying to remember your work prior to term 4, to see if I can identify whether you were always good and just got better gradually, or you just got really good, really fast, but I always come up blank. It's like you just exploded onto the map in term 4 and out of nowhere you were one of the best modelers in the class. I still have that memory of Larry at presentations saying of your baboon "OK, so this is your reference. When do we get to see the mod...? Oh!"
Your work is amazing on all levels. Modeling, texturing, and presentation. 5 stars. I hope a good company discovers you soon. :)

Hey dude, whats there to say. Just pure brilliance. I love your reel, its so polished and complete. The musculature of your "Reaper" and "Ultimate Baboon" is amazing. It was an honour to have met you. With your demeanour, personality and talent, you're going to do great things for 3d as a whole. I hope someday in the near future we can work together or atleast play some b-ball....hahaha.

Hi Man,
Great stuff indeed. I like the detail u made inside the mouth. It's damn cinematic to me. Great job! Good for ur job hunting...
Love the render pics, unfortunately i cant download the demo reel, ive tried downloading with firefox and IE but it just pauses at random percentages. Is anyone else having the same problems? Really want to see this one.

congratulations on your very hard work. I love what you did with the baboon, the color tons and the approach on the body is very interesting, maybe some spec adjustements in some areas would be needed. I also really like the anatomy on the ripper and the detail on the last model with all the accessories.
See you in the forum!

dont be a hater. we get 6 months to make 3 models. but the first 4 months are usually for us to make all of our mistakes and the last 2 are where we're suppose to bust out 2 amazing pieces, like the baboon you commented on.
grats on front page jisung.

Great reel, now that you have that behind you, the real learning begins and your models should get even better.
Great job! Hopefully in a years time I'll have something of said quality to show off! But, I wish you luck, ur works on par with many industry experienced artists, lets hope someone finds space for you.:deal:

Excellent reel, I remember seeing your baboon in the wip section somewhere but the end result is fantastic! Your music selection also helps in this case too. Best of luck in finding a job. But I do wish my school had its program spread out differently so I could spend 6 pure months on characters myself, VFS students are fortunate to have such a program. Thats okay, I'll just have to kick all your butts after I get out of school.:p

Excellent work in both texturing and modeling.
The navy seal is well done but the character itself is very boring ...another stupid guy with a gun.
The baboon is cool , i like a lot the turn around , it shows nice volumes and lines. But the still image is not good .All the stength of your model is lost . In my opinion , you should try a kind of side view to show the quality of your modeling work.
Finally the Grim Reapper simply rocks , congrats.

Wicked man Wicked! I realy like the skin job on the Grim Reaper, hands are awsome. The baboon is all around cool. My favorite is the Seal, the detail and the sweet texturing job on the wet suit. One of the best reals I have seen come out of VFS. Good Luck man.

Congrats for the deserved frontpage and your great reel! Very well done!
I hope you don't mind a short (really nitpicking) critique:
I agree with eFDay's comment about the Navy Seal and the Baboon. For both the stills were far less impressive than the animations were. I think mainly because the focus is not on the head of the baboon, where most of the expression lies. For the seal the angle of the still could also be better. The side view is pretty flat especially since the diving fins hide the shape of the second leg (unlike in your cutout symbol in the upper right corner).
I am sure that you have studied the anatomy for your Ultimate Baboon (I certainly haven't) but two things got my attention: 1. The upper, blue part of his mouth is at a very tight angle to his forehead and hardly leave any place for his eyes or for a fold in that area. Maybe his mouth is opened just a little bit too much. 2. His upper arms look very human-on-steroids like. But maybe baboons and humans are that closely related :)
The Grim Reaper is definitely my favorite. He's got personality and uniqueness. I also like the fact that he is muscular while his upper torso is not exagerratedly v-shaped but long which gives him a sublime appearance.
In the close-up transition between the textured/gray shaded model: Did the eyes transition separately? It seemed to me like he closed his eyes. Very nice detail if you did it on purpose, if not then I at least imagined it ;).
Again, I hope you don't mind me nitpicking your great hard work. Don't take my opinion too seriously, you are now at a point which I can only dream to achieve in 50 years or so. I'm just impressed.
five stars,
ben

Thank you for all the great words and constructive critiques.
I really appreciate it. I'm sorry that I couldn't reply all your individual comments.
The last model "Navy seal" was the first one I made and took me 3 months to complete as I struggled for the first attempt, and the second one "Ultimate Baboon" took me 2 months and the last one "Grim Greaper" took me 1 month to finish.
I tested the links and they are somtimes not working, the sever is probably overheated.
but I just don't know how to fix this problem, that's frustrating.
Does anyone know what I should do with it? Sorry for inconvenience.

very nice reel, i especially liked the baboon model, and the navy seal. the grims neck was a little bit to stylized for my taste but still very solid. great presentation too. goodluck with the job hunt (even tho you dont really need luck).

Hey Jisung, awesome reel! Funny thing was my boss actually showed me at work before i saw it online! I really enjoyed all of your models and great attention to the anatomy :)
Good luck in the future,
Dominic
wow,
I have to say how impressed I was with every model. You managed to get 3 high poly models out...... all textured..... man you must have kick sarted a bowing engine or something.
Great work, nuthin much else for me to say that hasn't been siad, ie... the spec on the baboon.
The last characters face was awsome by the way.
The reaper seems a little too symetrical though, but its a great sudy of anatomy.
Best of luck in the future.
