View Full Version : THE STORY REEL!_Challenge 1: "THE CHASE":RaisedByWolves
RaisedByWolves 02-22-2006, 08:37 AM Alright Mr. Mu, I can't leave you out to dry.
This is my entry thread for the animatic/story reel challenge.
It is about this bunny:
http://www.scraphero.com/projects/cgtalk/storyreel/1/pre_bunny.jpg
Concept: A cute bunny is enjoying his favorite vegetable patch when he realizes (but only too late) that he is being chased by something evil.
Chase scenes don't really thrill me, so I wanted to go with as different a slant on the issue that I figured I could get away with. The stlye I am going be sketching for is the kind of 'cute-icide' humor you see in Don Hertzfeldt cartoons, Happy Tree Friends, Slave Labor Graphics novels, etc.
Projected Schedule:
Wed - write out the scene, start sketching
Thur - finish sketching, start premiere'ing the sketches together
Fri - finish premiereing, and time permitting, throwing on some appropriate sound track and (god willing) sound effects.
Concept art for "the bunny":
http://www.scraphero.com/projects/cgtalk/storyreel/1/bunny_concept.jpg
I wanted just a very raw 'lump of bunny' that went against all the rules of cuteness. I wanted it to be cute only in the fact that it was so hopelessly not-cute.
I also wanted something that was quick to sketch, as I have little to no time availble before Friday. Like Mr. Mu, my goal is simply to get the thing finished.

Oh also, if anyone can figure out if/who I'm ripping off with that bunny, I'd really like to know.
Because I swear I've seen this thing before.
Hooorayy!
:bounce:
Go Mowgli GO! :D
It's looking great! And for some strange reason I absolutely adore the one sketch with the bunny's back towards the viewer and the question mark...:scream:
Looking forward to your updates!
til soon

Well, I fell asleep while doing the first sketch, but here's the basic story I wrote out before my tablet became a nice pillow:
The C#'s represent the 'cards', or storyboard panels. Basically how many frames I'm hoping to sketch.
SCRIPT
C#1
Title Placard
C#2
[Camera opens on a straight shot of a vegetable in the ground. Something leafy.]
C#3
Bunny ears pop up from behind the vegetable.
C#4
Bunny ears wiggle.
C#5-7
Rest of Bunny head rises up from behind leafy vegetable, bug eyed and happy.
C#8-9 bite, C#10 tug
Bunny "bites" a leaf of the vegetable and tugs, but the cute bastard can't rip it off and just tugs.
C#11-13
Bunny gives up, lets go, pauses a moment, and just gives a big stupid grin.
C#14-16
[Camera Cut, shot isn't straight on but from a little above, and from a 45 degree angle of original shot. Bunny is right
center, vegetable (lets say a carrot) is far right.]
Bunny is singing/humming something inane. There is something dark in the background, far left.
C#17-19
Something dark get bigger as bunny continues humming, looking around blankely.
C#20-21
Bunny gets alarmed, wide eyed, and spins head to look at dark thing in background.
C#22-25
Dark thing stops moving. Bunny pauses, and slowly returns to vegetable. Humming resumes after a moment.
[Camera pans to the vegetable with bunny's head turning back]
C#26-28
After a moment of humming, bunny looks back.
[Camera pans back to original position to reveal Black thing is very close now]
C#29-31
[Cut, Bunny's face, C.U.]
Bunny screams.
C#32-34
[Cut Side shot. Bunny running away from black thing as fast as his stubby legs can carry him, mouth still open as he is still
screaming]
C#35-37
Bam. Arm of Black thing pounds bunny flat into ground. Bunny organs squirt out from between talons like a person clapping down
on a Sarah Lee HoHo.
C#38

Alright, I've finished most the sketching and the first part's premiere'ing. Looks like it's gonna be around 30 cards, not the originally planned 40. Here's an overview of the first... I don't know, 14? something like that. Like HALF.
http://www.scraphero.com/projects/cgtalk/storyreel/1/part1_overview.jpg
I've also found a great song to go along with it, I hope no one minds if I use it without the artist's permission. It's from the adventure game "The Neverhood". I'm 99% sure the artist is Terry S. Taylor.
Anyway, mockup of part 1:

If anyone knows of a place where I can grab a Sorenson compressor, that would be great. I thought if I installed quicktime I would get one, but I don't think so- it was making this bad boy like 15-20 megabytes! geez!

Wow. The music piece sycned up amazingly with the storyboard. All I had to do was time some cards differently and Bam. Perfect. I don't think I can describe it. You better watch it.
Anyway, here are the other card's final sketches:

And here is my final: 6.36MB! Right click and "Save As"

Let me know if you get no video or audio. I tried to use very generic codecs.
Total time: About 4hrs, maybe 2.5 in Photoshop with tablet, 1.5 in Premiere.
Oh, and 5 mins with NOTEPAD! yeah!
My apologies for not spacing out the time spent on this, I know the whole point of these things is to critique each other, and allow for feedback- but much like everyone else I suffer from not enough time in a day.
It was fun! Hope you enjoy! Thanks for letting me participate! Cgtalk rocks. Etc.

I actually don't know if it's possible to do it in windows movie maker. But in Premiere I just keyframed the 'position' and 'zoom' properties of the stills and had it zoom in out/pan left right. I made the keyframes "bezier" instead of linear to get a smoother and more natural movement.
I've only used windows movie maker once, but it had quite a few properties windows if I remember. See if you can keyframe any of em.

Fantastic. Good work RaisedByWolves. What could be better than a bunny getting squished?
