Title: Royal Guard (violet Guard)
Name: Travis Tom
Country: United States
Software: Photoshop
This is one of an elite bodyguard unit called the Royal Guard. The musket's were used for close quarter combat situations like standing guard during diplomatic negotiations in an enemy's castle or while escorting on a ship voyage.
I an effort to further my ability, I have attempted to do a more finished illustration look.
I erased much of the scanned pen line around the focus of the image. No more crutch forced me to use value to express a change in part or material.
I used lots of warm and cool highlights to get some tangible mass to read.
Here's a cool tip: do a color and value layer (like the black torso) and on a layer above, do the warm and cool highlights. This way you can use hue adjust on the color layer and the highlights still work.
Basic-yes, but works.
Details like the leg pattern or the choker detail are new for me and helped up the professional look.
I'd appreciate hearing what you think, any tips or critiques, or if you just enjoy!
Cheers

Love your color pallet, the yellow really accentuate the blues, and the blacks….well blacks just really brings out the piece. Gives it a sense of fear. Kudos on the painting part. Love the details on the laces. And wow…big zipper she has. If you have time I’d love to see the coat have a more leathery feel to them. Same amount of attention you gave the laces. Unless your trying to achieve a more comic look; then it’s great.
Keep up the good work. Look forward to some more of your post.
wow nice man .... good work ... nice colors... face this girl is good ... i give you 5 ...
Wow!
Great image.. Did you have some kind of ref.? Think she's HOT!

Hot. I like that shes busty but full figured as well, not a Barbie freak. :wise:
Im not a fan of the big hand and foot thing, but in this case the left hand (our left) and the gun is out of proportion to the right. Ill let the foreground boot go just because well, its a boot and they look large ;)
Really like all the details, quasi-victorian jewelry and the cloth patterns. The zipper and its track could be scaled down some. It feels out of place on her delicate outfit.
Oh and on the nose, up close I see the MJ comment, I think its just that the nose is blended into the face a little too much. Maybe add a hint of structure there.

VERY cool work!
Superb design, and a really good, fleshy pose that almost seems 3d. Great proportions and colours too. I love all the little details on the boobs, arms and leggings.
She would look great in 3d!
Excellent stuff

Fantastic design, well done! The only thing I can critique is the characters right leg, it looks too thin right above the thigh next to her groin, her other thigh looks normal though.
Good work!

Hey, it's a pleasant surprise to get such great feedback from everyone! Thanks, it's very encouraging. I'm already thinking about what to do next (like I have time). I made a few replies here and there. If I didn't reply just know that our comments are still appreciated.
Cheers

Thanks for the feedback Herr, nice observation on the level of detail. It seems inconsistent. (the detail, not the observation!)

Hey, thanks for the 5!
Wow!
Great image.. Did you have some kind of ref.? Think she's HOT!
Thanks Michael. I was shooting for a level of sexiness. No reference, but inspired by Masamune Shiro and Hung Tae Kim. They rock!
Very sexy character! I like style very much, great
Thanks, I'm partial to style as well! I do like drawing cool flashy costumes.

Really sharp eye, plastik892! I scaled down the left hand! Didn't think it be noticeable. I'll have to check the nose issue though, then go back and hit it again. Really great comments!
woooow, Can I bite one of those? .......I just :love:her
heh, she might bite back! :)
i like everything about it.... nice palette. good work on the costume as well.
I really had a hard time with the palate, so your compliment is appreciated! I did have help though, on the WIP board! I think I went through 10 variations.
She's gorgeous! Great job on the textures!
Thanks! Funny you mention textures because I took some of this from texture mapping techniques. It must show in some tell tale way.
I like that you've managed to pull off sexy without going over the top. Very nice rich use of colour! I like. :D
well thanks you erilaz, I was going for hot - not overexposed, but still hot. Although some i've shown think this is just ridiculous.
VERY cool work!
Superb design, and a really good, fleshy pose that almost seems 3d. Great proportions and colours too. I love all the little details on the boobs, arms and leggings.
She would look great in 3d!
Excellent stuff
Thanks for the compliments, Andy. I'm thrilled that you see some 3d in the pose. I've always had trouble with putting body weight on a figure. Now, if you did this in 3d I think she's look great!
she's hot indeed~very nice character design and i like the way she pose:)
You know, this is the second comment about the pose. What is it specifically that's working? I'd like to do it again but I'm not really sure what it was!
Well, thanks again. G' night.

(IMO) I think the appreciation of the pose comes from the natural balance she has and her wary, alert expression. Even though the image has no background, the model still carries herself in a way that creates some drama and atmosphere can be created by the viewer. :arteest:

Dude, Great style and color. Your a great talent. However, her feet are to big. Size it down a bit an she look more womanly. Late!:D

Lovely work! The huge zipper is quite amusing... also this reminds me a little of some characters from Sean McMullen's novel "Souls in the Great Machine".
