Hey folks,

I did some sketching today for an Indiana Jones like poster I want to create for a very good girl friend of mine.

http://www.zolli.de/upload/Indy_001_start.jpg

Took some time to get the right pose, but I think itīs okay right now.

Sheīs squatting at the bottom of great stairs leading towards some kind of temple in a huge cave.

Thatīs the base setup, but I donīt know, something is missing.

Need some support on how I should setup lighting etc.

Would be great :-)

played a bit with the lighting.
I think it should be some kind of observation scene, where the female Indy is lighted by some torches etc. which are burning underneath the edge.
So her upper body, her knee an the hat are lighted different

The lights colours look great, it's turning out so nice
But there's the rock border in front of the subject that in a way kills the perspective, the ground end.

What exactly do you mean with this?

Please forgive me, but when it comes to more exact concepts my english gets worse :D

The horizontal line in front of the subject, the whole perspective is great, and I love the sensation it gives, as she passed already a great cave, but in a sense the perspective is blocked by this line, I know it's a shape of the ground but maybe if you make it less horizontal and more dynamic you'll give breath to the complex and long range perspective you planned.
On the other side if this is a dead end, I'll make the front part darker.
I don't know if I said it confused again. If you'd like I'll show you what I mean ;)
Keep up the great work on that one!

So I made some changes.
I didnīt like the entrance in the front, so I decided to paint it more like a broken wall. The stairs now lead from the image top out of the image in the front. The sharp edge in the front isnīt any more :-)
The light situation is slightly different from the previous image an the is now some kind of moonlight shining into the cave and lights the stairs.

I love the warm tones! The red and orange hot light gives the sensation of real fire light, truly indiana jones style :)

I think like this the image gets really more dynamic.
I don't really want to see whats next on that cave, or temple? (I remember some coackroachs from the movie, yeeeep) :D

I consider changing the perspective a little bit. At least the place where the female Indy is squatting, because it doesnīt match exactly with her pose. I also change the path of the stairs, so that you see more of them and then I want to replace the temple structure. It should be more on the left side.

I really like the figure, colors and lighting. I agree with you that the stairs in the background and the entry way could use a little adjustment. The stairs don't seem to have enough lift on each step and the steps appear to be tilted down hill. You really have a nice painting going, your special friend should be delighted to see it.

I agree about the perspective of the steps, but I think I would also like to see more in the area above her head and to the left. Maybe if you moved the entrance in the background to the left, it would add more movement and more interest to the composition. Nice job so far!

an update.

changed the perspective,
made her taller,
changed the front, there are now columns
added some kind of rock bridges in the back, theyīll fade in the distance so that will add some depth to the image

The colours arenīt to be criticised, they are not final, itīs only a quick compositing

All I can really say about this pic.... is well..... I dunno.... I don't like the way she's crouched. I don't think it's an appropriate environment for a quick sit and contemplate. I just don't think Indy would stop to pose like that in the temple of doom. But that's just me. other than that, A pretty good pic.
