I have been playing around with ambient occlusion and 1 bounce radiosity, and the results are quite promising:

Rendertime: 1h 13m 40s on a 2 GHz Pentium Centrino with 2 GB RAM.

2560 x 2048 px
Enhanced Low AA
Raytraced Shadows
Raytraced Reflection

Ambient Intensity 85%
Monte Carlo 100%
RPE: 2 x 6
Indirect Bounces 1

Distant Light
100% Intensity
Raytrace Shadow

Distant Light
15% Intensity
No Shadow (to break up the uniformity of the lighting inside the building)

AmbOcc Shader
Number of Rays: 4
Shift: 0
Max Ray Length: 3 m
Color: 180,180,180 (if the surface is white, ...so basically a darker version of the colour of the material the shader is applied on)
Affect color [ on ] (the others checked off)

as a point of reference, what would a non-optimized render time on a similar scene be?

This is a radiosity only image, 25% ambient, 3 bounces, 150% intensity, 3x9 RPE, Enhanced Low AA:

Rendertime = 17m 5s (256 x 205 px), which in terms of the previous image would end up in the 28h 30m range, so its over 20 times faster with the ambocc + radiosity combo, than a pure radiosity solution. Then again it is possible to add some point lights, reduce it to 2 bounce only and optimize it further.
