View Full Version : How do i make teeth follow mouth blend shapes?
frontjibi 02-20-2006, 09:33 PM Now here i made a mouth with blend shapes. I move the jaw or the upper mouth as a blend shape. It works perfectly fine. The only thing that's not working are the teeth/gums and toung. I've tried so many ways yet they never follow that mouth blendshape. I've gone through tutorials, yet none of them tell me how it's done. I've tried parenting the teeth to the joints and even the skin. Yet they never work.
Please tell me another way i should do? How is it suppose to be done? Make the teeth move along with the blend shapes that is.
I really appericiate your help.
oh and i didn't post this in maya forum because nobody seems to answer me.

The solution is that you need to use magic. Cast a mouth shape spell on your computer and repeat the following incantation:
Owa Tafa Kinshi Tayed Diam
Or you could use set driven key on the jaw bone connecting to the blend shape weight

If you use a blendshape, you should include the teeth and gums geometry as part of that blendshape and they should follow along. I'd recommend using joints for openning the jaw, as you'll get arcs, which you won't get with blendshapes. In this case, you'd simply parent the gum/mouth geo to the joints.
Either of these two approaches will work. If they don't work for you, you're doing it wrong.
And as the above poster suggested, you can also create a seperate blendshape on the gum/mouth geo and tie it into the blendshape for the skin. Make sure your blendshapes are in the right place in your deformation order.
Set driven key. That way you do not have to mess with the teeth when making your blendshapes.

This topic i made is old. The thing is, i've already discovered ages ago after i posted this topic. Ofcourse nobody botherd to reply back then so i just couldn't sit and wait for the answer. I then tried out many new ways of doing and finally got the one that worked well.
I am curious why now, you guys starting to reply?

If by ages ago, you mean a couple of weeks...ya. This thread is ancient!
But I guess it worked out because you discovered (learned) how to do it on your own. Much better than asking other people how to do every little thing.
You should be proud of yourself for figuring it out. :)
My guess as to the replies...is that since your Wallace and Gromit thread, you're experiencing your 15 minutes of CG Talk fame. Like it or not, internet chat forum celebrity has been thrust upon you.
My advice is to take it in stride.
