i would like to know this too, as the book i'm working through on facial setups (stop staring, by jason osipa) demonstrates the use of bump maps to create creases in the forehead and around the eyes, which are triggered by expressions when certain blend shapes are activated.
what would the equivalent for this be in blender? i'm assuming it would be a python thing.

I believe there is both a pydriver and pyexpressions that was written but not yet committed, so you will need to wait till 2.42.

Though you could use the stress channel. That's what it was coded for. when the mesh morph it will automatically apply less or more texture. it could be a bump map ;)

Yep, and you can also use drivers - just drive a texture strength ipo with shape ipo or with the controller for the facial shape.
