View Full Version : WIP: Path to darkness

Well I've started this project, and now that most of the colors are put, I have no idea how to add details. I don't have any techniques whatsoever, so here I am, begging for help.
Here is what I've done so far:
Things I'd like to fix:
-Texture of the walls. I hope it's not too late
-Transition between light and shadows on the floor
-Transition between wall and floor/sealing
-Metal of the torches
-Light on the walls
Any help/critique is welcome.

I think the ceiling sorta disappears too fast into the shadows for the
picture to read well .
I think this was an interesting thing you posted, not sure
about all those issues myself, so i made this little study,
maybe it'll help you out a bit.
First, I don't know if you made light that hits the floor that
way because of the sconces , but with the perspective a
circle of light on the ground would look like a horizontal ellipse (1.) .
Second, the sconces leave some sort of shadows behind them,
prolly not anywhere near like i have them in the pic and for such,
as for pretty much everything it's good to have some reference
pics (i didn't have much time for that, i just made some
observations on how the barthroom light hit the walls, ceiling and
floor while takin a shower in the morning, heh).
So from there i got the brighter areas in the floor and walls directly
away from the light (2.) (again not entirely accurate :P )
Then i made this dark iron wall sconce, with only a little reflection
of light from the surrounding torches and the shiny metal sconce.
For the latter I tried to make the reflections on its surface similar
those on a metal pole ,without even tryin to put any detail there
from the surrounding corridor, not at all certain how one would go
about doing that anyways :) , just used colors found in the
corridor on the sconce.
the corridor i left darkest where i thought the light couldn't hit
straight and where it was most distant from the torches,
of course :) (3.)
Then finally i painted this little texture (4.) , made sure it's tiling
and duplicated it enough to make a wall out of it. I used the
photoshop transform tool to put it in perspective and erased
the door openings and torches from it and set layer blending style
to 'darken' (5.)
Then I made another wall from the texture piece , put it in the
alcove on the right, set layer opacity to 30% (blending 'normal'),
ajusted brightness and contrast a bit and erased parts outside the
then finally i added a bit to the torchlight on the right wall.
ps. if you want really good reference, you could make a 3D
scene of the corridor :)

Wow, thanks a lot for taking so much time explaining everything. Honeslty, I wasen't even expecting a reply. I'll try everything you mentionned in your post. I'll post it as soon as I can (Might take over a week though, I don't have acess to my computer with my tablet until next week).
I think I'll just be starting over (my original image wasen't even big).
P.S. Could you post some screenshots of the layers you used? That could really help me.

Well here I am again. I started my paint all over again, and this time I followed you advice. The result is a bit better, but not as good as I expected. The problem is I don't know where to start, what tools use with what settings at what times or if I'm doing the right or wrong thing. Plus I can't manage to make straight lines.
I took a few screenshots of my progress, maybe you could tell me what I'm doing right and wrong (since you're so good and stuff :D)
Ok well this one is the outline of the image to get all the perspective.
I didn't really know how to proceed so I started by filling all the lines with a 100% color
This last one is with a bit of shading done. The torches aren't there yet, but the shading is done.
So... am I on the right track?

Well I've completed my second try at this, I think it looks much better. Don't know if there is anything wrong with it, or anything that I could add.

Well, you seem to have blotted in the colors and got the basic shadow/highlights and color scheme. Perhaps detailing it? What does the wall feel like? Is it brick, metal, plaster? Are the torches old or do they look new? I think you're doing well. I like the color choices - it seems sort of majestic yet hauntingly empty at the same time.
Keep up the awesome work! :)

I added bricks using Squibbit's method. I'm not very satisfied though. It seems my highlight layers are too saturated and cover the texture, but if I lover their opacity, it just becomes worse.
