My guess is that he wants some sort of visual control on how far the DOF can be controlled or set.
On highend3d there's a cool mel script for this job.....

sorry guys, i shoud have explained myself better.
the prob im having is trying to make it look as if its not a post effect, it always looks half blurred and abit crap when one object passes on front/behind and object..

ther are two swolutions.. that i know of
one is to attach your center of interest to the focal lenght and the work around with the fstop
the narrowerm, the more deph of field..( 2, 4, 5.6, 8, 16, 22, 36 )etc...
22 means your diafram is almost closed which means yuou have more DOF.. and 2 does the opsite... also tweak the focus region scale 1 this is the distance from the center in wich your objects will be in focus...
but then maya gives you that circle witch looks wrong...
so you can render a dephchannel and in post use the deph info to get you your Dof....
