View Full Version : modo??
jason108 02-19-2006, 08:45 PM Hello,
I was wondering if any of you fellow Maya users have tried using modo with Maya?
Any comments would be very nice to hear.
Thanks for you time.

This thread is the WIP for a chap who is using Modo and Maya. It goes on a bit, but he does give a small insight into how well the app works.

Doubtless Modo is an excellent and capable modeller...its sorta like a mix between LW and Maya. I tried at version 1.o but found to many bugs and limitations at the time for it to be worth it. If you know the Maya workflow very good....and have customized maya a lot....its quite a pain to change habits.
To the original posting: Any other modeler that you have access to will give you some new tool or advantage not found elsewhere.
As a Lightwave refugee, I felt familiar with Modo right away. It has the same peculiar methods as Lightwave. I believe it was developed by Newtek ex-patriates.
Here is the big difference between modeling in Lightwave/Modo and modeling in Maya:
For one, LW modeling is segregated. You model one object at a time in it's own 'workshop'. In Maya (and most 3D apps, for that matter), you model and do everything in one environment.
Second, and probably the most fundamental: (Object Level and Component Level) In LW modeler, you are always in 'component mode'. If no components are selected, then actions and tools affect 'all' of the current component type.
So, for a simple MOVE function:
Two vertices selected : those two get MOVEd.
If no vertices are selected, then _all_ get MOVEd.
I would agree with 2byts in theory. However, I was recently called on to do some work in Lightwave. As I sat trying so hard to remember some of the hotkeys for certain commands, I was surprised to find my finger hovering over just the right key.
Kinda like riding a bike :)
If you have loved LW modeling, then you will love Modo. If you have never used LW, then you're chances of not liking Modo increase.
There is a selection style that LW modeling provided for me that Maya cannot duplicate. I miss it sometimes, but the trade-offs have been worth it. There's always a new way to get what you want, right around the corner.
LW users will recall that it's subdivision process got all of us thinking in quad topology as early as 1997. :) (or was 'MetaNURBS' earlier than v5?)

I use Modo with Maya regularly and I love it. Modo is very capable but every once in awhile I switch back to Maya for some bell or whistle that Modo does not have (or that I haven't learned how to use in Modo yet). If you are familiar with Maya, you can be up to speed with Modo pretty quick because there is a keyboard/mouse set up that mimicks Maya's shortcuts. Modo does have some bugs that can be very annoying but nothing that has been a show stopper for me. It can write Maya ASCII files, but usually when you open them in Maya, the camera clipping planes are screwed up so you have to re-adjust them.
