hey everyone,

is it possible for objects to emit light in Maya? If so, how? I have Maya 3.0.

Thanks

No way, you could just fake this by using a glow effect... and it's well off to be perfect.
(And I don't know any renderer who could do this... maybe things like Mental Ray, Final Render or else???)

hmmm... well the reason I asked was because I bought this book Digital Lighting & Rendering (I'm sure you've all heard of the book!) and in the very beginning, it goes over all the different light types. The last four are Area lights (Maya has those), and then:

Spherical lights: they scale in 3 dimensions to get different effects of light

Flat area lights: they scale in 2 dimensions

Linear lights: kinda looks like a florescent tube and scales in only one dimension.

Then it even goes on to talk about models that serve as light! I'm pretty sure that MAX can do this... but I might be wrong.

anymore help would be appreciated.

Well, the author of the book use Mental Ray too... soooooooo...
Look in the rendering doc, where they talk about light... you can see what you can use or not... No more and no less... And Max for what I've seen has the same light than other apps :) Lightwave hasn't Spherical, flat and linear too

3D Studio Max can do it trough Lightscape.
Lightscape can import Max scenesand supports geometry light souses.
Also 3D Studio VIZ R4 will have geometry light souses.

Well, Lightscape isn't exactly bought with Max I think nor Viz 4 ;) So you can too export to 3ds format and import that in Lightscape and viz 4 ;)

For max just use luma object or final render to make an object produce light.
Want more on luma object ? Try www.trinity3d.com
I switch between maya and max myself for specifics, and find this to be a pretty easy method of lighting.
Havent found a good way in Maya to do it. But I'm sure its there.
