Ok, lets see, what your running into there is the complete incompatibility of vector graphics and bitmaps, while your shape, (the sun in this case) is a vector, you cannot edit it in anyway other than applying styles, editing the shape, color, opacity, and size (in Photoshop, which I am assuming is what your running, in illustrator you have more options) rasterizing means that you are converting the un-editable vector to an editable bitmap, allowing you to do normal things like paint, erase, all the filters, and the like. Rasterizing as such is fine and should give you the effects you’re looking for. I hope that helps, if you need more help just ask.

Rasterize it, or use the marquee tool to select the shape you need then fill it with whatever color is appropriate.
