View Full Version : Modeling reel (first attempt)
porkchopexpress 02-16-2006, 08:01 PM Hey all,
It's the porkchopexpress here again. I have some finished pieces under my belt and so I put a reel together. Crits and comments are needed. What should be in/out, timing, lighting, anything that can make it better. Right click and save.

Chop,
Hey man, nice work on the reel. I liked the opening-logo, and music choice a lot. You're starting to brand yourself and thats good. And the music choice wasn't the same piece of music that elleventy billion other people have used.
I can tell you spent a lot of time on the female model, and the pose is pretty nice. I'm not too happy with the face that's visible through the helmet though. The stylized anatomy was good too... you excentuated the female form's finer assets nicely (I think i justs said your model has a nice ass).
I know some of the reservations you have with the reel after talking to you already. I have to agree with you on the 360 of the girl though. It's just way too long. It really overpowers the rest of the reel because its onscreen so disproportionately long.
The bike is a bit of a disapointment though. It comes off a little too much like a plastic toy. At the very least I'd go in and dirty it up a bit on the texture. Nothing is that new, not even new stuff.
The bike race/mountain sequence doesn't do the animation justice. The split screen divides my attention too much between the mountain and the bike race itself. And the width of the gradient you've used to divide the screen is stealing too much real estate.
I think you can fix a couple of major problems making the bike/mountain segment a little less ambitious. First, show the bike in action racing along the mountain road. Only show the parts of the trail that most emphasize your ability to do exciting vehicle animations... in short shoot a commercial for the bike (that's wierd. I can't ever remember seeing a bike advertised on T.V.... hmmm). Might be a fun gag to throw a "Profesional Driver on Closed Course" disclaimer in the lower right hand corner of the screen.
Then do your mountain rotation sequence by itself. Just like you did for the bike rotation. This will eat into the 360 time you used on the girl, and make your reel more balanced.
Don't feel like you can't be constantly improving the segments either. When you get the mood, tweak your bike design, make the drivers face a little more pleasant to look upon, play with the actual animation paths of the bike etc.
That's all I got right now. This reel doesn't look bad to me, but I know you well enough to know you can do better with a little elbow greese.
Good luck man! Thank for posting.

Thanks for the comment Dubu! You have a lot of really good sugestions here. And frankly after staring at the same pieces for such a long period of time it's hard to think about them in a fresh way.
I have already composed new shots of the mountain that are much closer and reveal more detail. I am not sure yet if I should speed up the turn of the female model or just cut it earlier. And as far as disstressing the bike I am at kind of a loss. Maybe I can paint some dirt on it. I also had the suggestion of adding some tire tread instead of having the plain racing slicks. I do plan to tweak the tire shape at the very least so that it is a little more natural.

Hey all,
Here are some screen captures from the reel, and I forgot to mention that the file size is only 11 megs.
