View Full Version : morpher tool
logan 76 02-16-2006, 05:37 PM How do you use the morpher tool in shake 3.5.
I have got as far as lining up the two clips, a+b, and drawing a roto shape with a keyframe for shape a and a keyframe for destination shape b. I have keyframed the overall displacement/disolve to go between 0 and 1 over the same interval. this creates a disolve between the two clips but no morph. I guess i have to draw more rotoshapes and link them somehow, but can you give me a clue how to do the linking.
Morpher does not have an entry in the tutorials or the reference guide pdf's. there is an overview in the "Whats new" document which i have read but which doesn't go into enough detail, so be kind, and help me out.
cheers. :-)

Hi Logan,
just finished a morph (first time) in Shake 4, so I hope its the same for 3.5 to give you some tips. A morph works best when A and B are very similar and no extra pixel-mass has to be morphed to B. If so, it will do a disolve and not a morph. (in my case A was a single face and B was the same face with 2 other faces attached left and right. and the effect i've tried had to look like something out of a scifi movie like 'Alien') the one attached is a sample with some other effects, but you know what i mean....
Anyway, the problem was that B had alot more pixel mass then A, so I had to reverse the morph and in that way get rid of dissolves. Another thing is that you can border out your spline (right or control click and select 'set as border') this way the morpher knows to stay within that border for pixel information and really morph instead of dissolving.
Also, when drawing a spline on A, try to use the same start point and rest of points for B (for some cases just copy the spline and scale it, if you don't have the same pixel information) this way, the features do not twist or morph in a bad way.
Hope these tips are some good. I spend 4 days on my morph and found that you are never can be totaly happy with the result, but just keep trying (and do some touching up afterwards)
Hope this makes sense and if you need more just mail me.
Take care,
cheers..

Thanks for the tips.
I have been a bit more successfull today than yesterday, but am still struggling to make it look "nice". but it's getting better.
The buttons i didn't know to use is the "connect shapes" and "edit connection" Mode, though figured it out in the end.
The tips about keeping the spline shapes to similar points are helping sort out some bubbling, swirling, problems around the edge of the shape.
cheers.

The tutorial on using the Morpher/Warper is in the "New Features" docs. They didn't integrate it into the main docs till 4.0.
