Hey Guys, I'm decideing to bandwagon this shit up. images/icons/icon7.gif

Ahh al little about me then, I like this forum, I'm on it like everyday so I might aswell participate :D.

My name is Andrew Melnychuk-Oseen. I'm from Lethbridge Alberta. I am enrolled in the new media fine arts program. I am finishing up my program this april and will be pursueing an internship. (this is where u wish me luck and all that jazz :) ) Hopefully I end up doing fantasy art but whatever. As long as I can draw.

I love all things art, game art especially, same with comics. Comics rule the haus. I enjoy drawing naked people as well. Shreddies in the morning. And a coffee/anything caffine when I draw. It really helps. I guess Drugs help me draw. :) . And hip hop. Hip Hop rules.

I'm also a hardcore 3d artist. Love that stuff but I'm focusing on the traditional stuff first cause theres no point makeing something 3d if its not art. you know?

Well thx for stoping plz feel free to leave any comments and crits.

Great to see you bandwagoning!

Some great sketches here, and looking forward to seeing how your thread develops. Hopefully you can participate in the next OFDW 04, which begins on Monday. We'll be doing another Bouguereau Master Copy, and folks will have a choice between 2 different Bouguereau paintings.

Sorry, didn't want to interrupt your flow there. :D I quite like the creature concept, have you seen our Creatures thread? Post a link in a moment...

THese I did a while ago. Last summer I had the opportunity to paint for 23 days straight. 8 hours a day. SO this is how I progressed when I had the opportunity to practise. Now that I am in school I dont have that luxury anymore.
8 hours spent on each peice
http://people.uleth.ca/%7Eandrew.melnychukosee/gestures/progression/0001.jpg

6th
http://people.uleth.ca/%7Eandrew.melnychukosee/gestures/progression/0006.jpg

16th
http://people.uleth.ca/%7Eandrew.melnychukosee/gestures/progression/0016.jpg

At my 19th I seem to pleatau These I posted a while ago.
19th (http://people.uleth.ca/%7Eandrew.melnychukosee/figdrawing/0019.JPG)
21st (http://people.uleth.ca/%7Eandrew.melnychukosee/figdrawing/0021post2.jpg)
22nd (http://people.uleth.ca/%7Eandrew.melnychukosee/figdrawing/0022finalHiRes.jpg)

So it took me under 200 hours before I could do 22.
Now that I'm in school I cant do that anymore. GAR!

SO I made this post to hopefully inspire some ppl that are struggling to advance their skills. You will advance in time. Just practise practise practise. and keep focused. ANd keep the prac up so u dont lose it like me. :(

Aww, Andrew, I am sorry to hear that you don't have as much time to paint as you'd like...don't we all know that feeling. :D

Even if you can't paint as much, it might be nice if you can put in a bit of time on a weekly basis on the OFDWs. You may not be able to finish each one, but it will at least keep you going...the worst option is that you don't do any at all, and lose the feeling for it ~ but ultimately, I think if you really enjoy something, you will naturally come back to it. :)

Cheers,

Ah ty for the feedback Alessa,
I'm doing so much drawing these days to the point thats its affecting my grades in school to iron out my porportion problems, I read so many drawing books but its the prac thats the most help i find. I try to apply the rules but they dont work as good as just takeing my time and looking, measureing. ect. Im starting to take more time, draw slowly, until i get the proportions down, then go back to my gestures.

Well heres the new line up

Hey Andrew,

I really like your last piece a lot ~ the loose way you've done the background is really nice. I think in some ways you might benefit from departing a bit from a more linear to a more blocky / values / mass oriented style such as you are exploring in this last piece ~ it seems to be working really well for you. :)

Good luck with your demo reel! :) If your concept sketches are to be part of your portfolio, I would recommend painting out the background smudges and making everything as clean as possible. A lot of it is about presentation, and you don't want to lose points for that. :)

Rebecca-I'm not gonna continue that one, it was just a proportion practise. Thank you for your input though. It is always always appreciated. For my next piece I'm putting more time into it. So there will be much progress that I will take critique on.

Thanks Glen, I'm trying to practise as much as I can. Right now I'm in the pinch of trying to get a job and my 3d skills seem to be in more demand than my abilities to draw. Not thats a bad thing, it just divides my focus.

Well Here is my attempt at a celebrity. Anyguesses on who it is?? :). Shes my third favorite. Came in just behind of air and water, but beat food witch comes in at a distant fourth.

Hi Andrew,

I think you start your pieces perhaps with too rough of a brush, I would recommend taming the brushstrokes a bit as they are looking rather disjointed / blocky ~ I think blending a bit more will definitely help your values to read.

Looking forward to an update! :)

Hey Rebecca, Thanks, Yea I'm doing this deadlayer to practise the values more. Once I fishish this blending I'm going to adjust the contrast of my values see if I can get them as close to real as possible.

Hey Glen, Thanks. This is like my ultra liquify all day till its correct phase. I'm glad its not frowned on. Its like so much easier than repainting I find. :D

Andrew,

Good to see your new work ~ hey, that's great that you've done so many Gestures this year! Do you feel that they have helped you a lot? I would certainly guess that they have. :)

I can't remember if I've suggested it, but one book from which I think you might really benefit is Vilppu's Drawing Manual (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1892053039/sr=8-1/qid=1150145156/ref=sr_1_1/102-0497821-9786508?%5Fencoding=UTF8). I think the main thing that will help is to break forms down into more basic forms ~ draw pages of boxes, cylinders, spheres, and then try to connect them into basic human shapes. The simpler, the better ~ it's amazing what will 'read' as human form without even knowing the slightest bit about anatomy.

Looking forward to seeing more of your work!

Cheers, :)

That last one is great, very solid communication on the foreshortening.

I really like this earlier one (http://people.uleth.ca/%7Eandrew.melnychukosee/gestures/g_0157.JPG), it's a quick one but the energy in the hair and the 'graphical' aspect looks great.

Grats on the Bioware job, it sounds like a great place. Very cool that they do a weekly live model session -- nothing seems to really replace working from a live model. :)

Damn its been awhile

Hey rebecca,
WIth these pictures i always think to myself, crap i should take this all the way. I never do. I usually do some of these in the evenings then go to bed. I'm working on one that I plan to take the distance right now. Something I can submit to like the expose or something. Like a couple of months on a piece.

Kary,
thx for the comments man, I'm still learning of course. And your tottaly right nothing replaces live figure drawing. A couple of friends that go to the figure drawing in the evenings got it up going twice a week. I wanna have a contract from Marvel for Ultimate Fantastic Four before I'm 24 so I got a looooooong way to go.

Well time to dump the images :D

O yea, if you guys know of a good refrence site of www.domai.com quality but for men, I'm all ears. I dont wanna be able to just draw women.... Well...I do... but.. gotta keep the skills balanced.

Thx.

Hey Andrew, :)

I really think that you will learn more about the figure from doing Master Copies than from painting pin-up girls. ;) While pretty, models aren't always the best people to draw. I really hope you can join in the ongoing Workshop, which I think you'd really enjoy:

Hi Andrew, it's really interesting to see your progression through this thread, your work is starting to pay off. The masters thing is definitely a good idea... i hadn't really considerd it until I thought if I were a sculptor, would I rather learn from the Michael Angelos, or the reproduction garden statues that any guy throws out? No contest really! These masters know their stuff about the figure, and colour, and edges. I've not done too many, but I learn so much every time I do. Those last two studies you've done are definitely along the right path... I really like the combination of line and tone in the first one.

Hi.....Andrew....

Doing those master copies looks like it is really paying off for you..big time:thumbsup:
That one in frame # 79...WOW....Now that's what it's all about...:applause:
In that one, you lost the outline, and replaced it with air // atmosphere...creates a whole different, and better effect...lets the painting BREATH..:bounce:
Letting the background unite with the figure, has a way of creating a ONENESS in the piece. Edges that disapear also let the viewers imagination roam and explore the unseen...forces or allows them to partake in, and complete the journy AROUND the figure.:)
Really looking forward to seeing more like that one from you...FANTASTIC job there...

anandpg-Hey man thanks for the comments. Well I dont have an anatomy book. I'm thinking of getting the statue from that cg learning place. That big one with the poster. Then labeling all the muscles every drawing. I do have the goal of memorizing all the msucles and bones.

SpiritDreamer-hey spirit, thanks man, thats something that really caught my eye about that painting. How the foreground and main subject matter melted out of the background. I was like wtf? So once i start doing my own pieces I'm gonna try takeing that technique and applying it to my own. Thanks again.

Cris-Palomino- Thanks glad you had a good time. I really want to get this up to like a billion pages. I have done over 200 studies this year(I belive this is 201 ;) ). My goal is to get to 365. Some real progress here, and I actually like that last piece a lot - the black lines are adding an ink like line quality and that's a nice contrast to the rest of the shading. HEY....Andrew....

Your work is getting consistantly better....looks like learning from the past is really paying off big time for you..
Michelangelo designed that armor that Lorenzo is wearing in that last post of yours, from his imagination,...you might take a look at some of DaVinci's armor designs,..helmets ect....some really wild ideas..:scream:
I was thinking that it would be great if you took some of the demon faces from Michelangelo's last judgement fresco,.. and put them onto the front of a breast plate ..or maybe fashion them into a helmet,..in the DaVinci fashion..would be a great way to design something new, from something old, and make it your own, for one of your own visions...just a thought.:)
I also really like the hair in the top picture in post #114 above,..has a really nice sheen to it..don't lose that brush, makes the hair look real..

Hey Dood:

Man this is sooo off the hook! You have really developed your own style, and that is soo wicked to see. Love the girl above, really captured some personality, good luck with work and keep up the drawings!

Thanks alot guys,

xX_eXiGe_Xx- the school I went to only posed as an art school. They told me it was a Fine Art School in New Media. All lies. I mainly just draw what I see and look for resources on traditional education.

Speaking of which, I am starting Riven Pheonixes Drawing course thing. I'm going to tottaly buy the DVDS.

I'm on lesson 11 right now.

Thanks everybody!

anandpg- i had a lot of fun on that one, around that time I was definatley trying to paint how I was feeling. A bit of therapy shit.

Talking_Pie- THanks dude!

SpiritDreamer- Hey ! I got so much on the go but im still fighting for the time to draw. I was noticin' when I was painting that I could only paint what I see and I wasn't understanding my subject matter. So now I'm going back to the basics.

THanks again guys.

ty,

I'm in the middle of a move down to California right now so I'm gonna wait to order them

I was touring venice beach while down in cali for an interview, such an awesome place, I came accross a artist who was selling his work. Andre Donzalski, reall cool bad ass art work.
This is inspired by him

Great energy and movement captured in that one, and a nice (crisp) line in that last side view study. Quite a few pieces show off your ability to capture in a sketchy style, but you can also lay out formal line when you want, nice bredth. Seems like things are coming together great to me :)
