View Full Version : How do I model a penguin beak?

Hey everyone. I'm looking for the best way to model a penguin beak in maya. Once I have the beak down the animation is going to consist of making it talk. I'm looking for the most convienent way so when I rig it as well it will be easier to handle. Please give me any suggestions. I would appreciate it.

Penguin's beaks are hard (as in stiff, not difficult), so if you were going to animate it, wouldn't it just be a simple jaw bone rig? If you're wanting to do a cartoony, bendy beak, that will act more human (since real penguins can't talk, and wouldn't have the proper mouth control to pronounce words properly, then this is what I suspect you'll be doing) then have a look at some shape animation tutorials.

I don't know what application you're using, but Softimage's Making Faces tutorial (http://www.softimage.com/education/Xsi/SelfPacedLearning/Tutorials/webTutorials/XSI_3_0/shape_animation/XSI30_Tutorial11.pdf) is wuite useful regardless.

Chalk another one up to boredom at work. Here are the steps I used to model the beak in
less than 5 minutes. I created 2 curves, one for the upper beak and one for the lower. I then made 2 flat polygon and extruded them one at a time along the curves with a division setting of 6. For the upper beak i set the taper amount to 0 so it came to a point, the lower was set at 0.25.
