hi!

i've got a complex scene, and have to render out objects to still images but with different textures. Obviously i'm not liking the idea of rendering the whole picture every time.. :)

so i'm looking for a way/script that does this:

- i select one or more objects
- only these selected objects show up on the render, but the areas of the rendered objects are NOT rendered when they are behind an object that is not selected.
as if the not-selected objects had matte-shadow material on them.

i know i can just assign the matte/shadow material to the not-selected objects manually , and then undo it back after render, but since i would have to do it a lot right now, i'm looking for an easier, automated way..

havent found one till this point..

thanks in advance !

You might want to look into using some sort of Layer Manager script. Max has one that comes with it (Tools-->Layer Manager), but I tend to use The Onion from Blur. It's a handy little tool that I seem to use everyday. Allows you to assign objects to different layers, and also assign a secondary material to those layers which you can turn off and on just by clicking a button; comes in very handy when you want to render various passes with Matte /shadow. If you goto Scriptspot.com and do a search for The Onion you should find it no problem.

hope this helps

material override by layer :)
that's a good idea ! cool ! thanks

one more thing that i dont know how would it possible to achieve / automate :(
i have to render out reflection passes in the same manner You and i described in our posts.

but the objects with the matte/shadow materials obviously does not 'send out' reflections...
would be nice to have a 'render selected objects with hiding-detection' dropdown option in the 'view/region/selected/blowup..' menu that keeps it simple .. sigh ... :>
