I have been messing around with different methods for generating/rendering normal maps in maya. I've had success but I really dislike the taxing render times of mental ray. So I decided to use the new surface sampler provided with maya 7. It seems like its working great when I bake the map and view the HighQualityRender in the viewport. The problem is that the base mesh's cage still shows through, and when I render with software (which is supposed to work fine...) it's artifact heaven. My settings are correct according to this tutorial: http://www.digitaltutors.com/digital_tutors/video.php?v=713&f=q
Here are some screens of my dillema. If anyone can shed some light on this I would really appreciate it.
First the Surface Sampler Settings: http://www.banishedart.com/surfacesampler/hands_sss.jpg
HighQuality Render in Viewport - Hardware texturing is On:http://www.banishedart.com/surfacesampler/hands2.jpg
And finaly the Software Render that should work:http://www.banishedart.com/surfacesampler/hands.jpg
