Hello,

The last 6 months, i worked on a video-game project.

Despite it's not Doom3 nor HL2 quality, it was intended to be a commercial project ...

Before i spend more time on it, i wanted to get as many honnest advices and critics as possible.

Do you think my project looks professional ennough ?

I forgot to say :
1- (in case you did not guessed by yourself) the main target of this project are kids.
2- i accept any critiques and even simple opinion
3- the poll is anonymous !
4- thank you for your cooperation

While the environments look semi-decent, you really need to work on you character designs.

Hiya.

First impression: Too dark. If it's for kids, I'd bump the brightness levels up a few notches. Also, I think it needs to be more contrasty...kids tend to see things better that way from what I gather.

Also, kids might want more "stuff" to look at...birds, butterflies, rabbits, scenery nick-nacks (rocks, tree stumps, barrols, wagons, etc.).

Other than that, I'd say it's getting very close...it just needs a bit more..."more" if you know what I mean.

Good luck at any rate! :)

Yea i like your project. I agree with the comments above but just out of curiosity what program(s) did you use.(i mean the most important ones like the level editor, 3d program, and stuff like that)

Same as said above.
Black shadows look really odd, they always do. Try to turn up the ambience and give it a sort of more... "happy" and natural look :)
Also, I think the characters need work.
Other than that, I like the outside scenes. More detail and I'd say its commerical :)

First, thank you for your comments.

______________

About doing "more", i agree and that was planed.

But because it requires lots of work, i wanted to get some objective and neutral point of view about what is already done, so i can guess if it actually worth doing more efforts to achieve.

Because the problem with me, is exactly the same than with children who made a "beautifull" drawing and who show it to their parents :
1 - it's difficult to me to have an objective vision of my work ...
2 - acquaintances not always dare saying the truth !

______________

About the tools i use :
- 3d modeler : Wings3D
- 2d : Gimp
- map editor : MappyWin32 (a 2D tile map editor)
- animation/skining editor, 3d engine and script-engine are home made, but i plan to abandon them for opensource projects (to save time on maintainance) ...
- and to make music, i use an old version of cakewalk

Ok, i want to say "thank you" to the 19 persons who voted.

I think i should have added something between "looks good" and "looks n00b", or used, instead, a notation between 0 and 10, so i would have had a better precision of your opinion. But what is done is done :P

Thanks to you, i now know that i'll have to work a LOT more before my project starts to be professional quality.

Maybe i'll come back in the next month with new screen-shots :)

Well, not yet. But there is hope.

The environments actually look pretty decent. They just need a little more work to bring them up to a professional level. But every character except the Boss guy in the suit needs to be scrapped. And frankly, the boss guy isn't that great either.

First, the environments:

The forms are pretty good. And the local colors are good choices. I think you know how to draw in the style you're aiming for. The biggest concerns though are the textures and the lighting. The textures are waaaaay too low-res. They're also quite blurry, though this could be the effect of video card texture filtering on a low-re texture. Frankly, you need to either crank up the resolution by double or quadruple or lose the textures entirely.

As for the lighting, you need to introduce more color into the shadows. By most cartoon conventions the color you need is blue. Not just a little, but a lot. For the sort of cartoon world you're building, nothing should be shaded to black. Go look at how shadows are handled in a Mario game for comparison.

And then there's the characters:

The hands-as-little spheres thing can work and has been done. But the heads are terrible. You need to sketch these characters out on paper and make them work there before trying to model them on the computer. If there's no life to them when they're graphite, there won't be any more in them when they're triangles. Vary the head shapes more. Introduce different hair styles and hats. And increase the resolution of your character textures. Blurry facial features are worse than no facial features at all.

That's my 2 cents. Again, I do think there's the basis for some good work here. It just needs higher res textures and some TLC.

The guy on those pics is weird :)
I find him funny, hehe

I would estimate your work as "quite not bad"

I can't play the game so I can't judge it completely. It looks quite imaginative, which is nice in this day an age. However, I can tell you why it doesn't look professional - you need to decide what style you are using for the textures and stick to it.

You've made attempts in the interiors to create realistic lighting and textures, but outside you seem to be focusing more on a mario-land style. If the characters are cartoony, the textures need to be cartoony and consistently cartoony.

Any attempts to create "realistic" details ruins the cartoon-illusion! As someone mentioned above, the shadows are way too dark. It might help to scrap them altogether. Look at Animal Crossing - look how all the textures fit/harmonize next to each other. Big details on items help the cartoon illusion, like large bolts, buttons, blades of grass.

Also - the colours are too close to primary/default colours. The greens, reds and blues are too close to the default colours. They are also monotonal. eg: a blue texture is BLUE with black and nothing else - try adding some more colour, highlights, make them jump out a bit more, add more dimension to them, try to keep the scales consistent too. Cartoony textures always seem larger than life.

The grass and path graphics are TOO realistic. Maybe use cartoony bricks to create the transition between the two. Hand draw the rocks of the path, and the grass texture - its far too complicated.

Keep going, the game's looking promising.

It looks good, and I like the style... It reminds me of Animal Crossing.

My only suggestion is to perhaps use very sharp and clear character skins.

I would like to thank you all for your critiques, and for you participation to the poll.

I'll take all you said under concideration when i'll redo this game :)
