View Full Version : My complete(not yet) rigging tutorial
dmcgrath 12-10-2002, 11:39 PM Okay this is a very detailed Maya rigging tut. So far I am up to only the spine neck and head setup. You will see why if you go to my site.
spatiallight.net (http://www.spatiallight.net/tutorialsPage/tutorials.html)
There are currently several pages and I would like to use this forum for some inputs and also Q&A. Takea a look at it and tell me if it loaded fast enough for you and even if you understand it.
I want to do a whole tut, but would like some input to help make it better before I really finish it.
Thanks all!

I think you should add a special thanks to Paul Thuriot at the beginning of your tutorial.

Yes, I would agree, he is the teacher I had at the AAC. I also want to email him and ask him if it's okay for me to do this.
Thanks for the reminder.

well in this case if he was your teacher, there's a whole Lot of chances that you'll Rig like him ;)

Looks great already man! Was browsin over quickly as I should really be working, but very involved - it certainly sounds clever! I'll have to give it some more time when I have the chance. Thanks for putting this out there!

A suggestions...this is considered a high res mesh...that would need a wrap deformer that would be rigged instead. My basic questions are this: I noticed wrap deformers dont have to be a single continuous mesh which raises some questions for me...about how to set up the wrap deformers properly...and also, how does this effect blendshapes and what not?

Thank you! It's a good tutorial.
Will you write some pages about skinning. It's the more difficult for beginner!
Note: You should make a main table with the chapters on a first page!

This is good input, thank you to all of you so far.
AAbel: I did talk to Paul Thuriot and he seems to approve. That made my morning. Thanks again.
2byts: This is a full character, but he's unsmmothed polys so far. Alot of them, but I would call him more a medium rez. As to your other questions, I'm not as good at wraps yet, I'm still learning myself. Give me some more time and I'll try and get into the wrap deformers on the second tut.
Nicool: Thanks for the suggestions on the chapters format, it's a good idea. And skinning will be covered, it is harder for all of us, trust me. My best advice is to always work at it and learn what you can through experience. It is far harder to teach skinning because only the most basic of rules apply, then it is a matter of whatever works for the shot the character is in.
Thanks again everyone, and I'll keep updating as soon as I can

I didn't think Paul would have any problem with you posting his rig. I just thought that giving him a special thanks would be the right thing to do.

hey all,
yeah, dan emailed me this morn.
and yeah, it's cool that he's doing this...i know how involved writing tutorials can be! urgh.... ;)
maybe someday i'll sit down and write a full-blow character setup tutorial...which could turn into some type of book or something.... but we'll see...need time to do such things, eh?!
but for now...i'm sure dan's tutorial will turn out great! ;) and i should be around if you've got questions, etc...seeing as i just started checking out this site....
have fun!

hi,
really cool to see Mr Thuriot on this board , i've wished to become a character rigger after i've read his fantastic tutorial about rigging characters with indirect skinning method, really cool
you still find this tut here : http://www.highend3d.com/maya/tutorials/charcterSetup/setup_1.3d

2byts: if you want to know about wrap deformers, Stahlberg's excellent (if brief) introduction is here: http://www.androidblues.com/rigtut.html

hey there...
so since someone has brought it up...i have to say, that yeah...about that tutorial i made eons ago (the indirect skinning one)...that MAY be a good and ONLY a starting point for for someone trying to learn setup in maya....
that type of set up in there isn't all that--shall we say--"hot." the tutorial dan is in the process of writing has a MUCH better technique!!!! (i was young back then...what can i say!? hehe...kidding.... ;p
so yeah...maybe flip thru that old tut thing for ideas...but at least don't take the techniques of joint placement/ set up to heart.
--------------------------
and as far as the wrap deforming technique goes...i had the priveledge of working along side the guy who WROTE the wrap deformer in maya while we were at paraform, so i got a lot of insider information! ;) (super smart guy: karan singh)
it works...but like everyone should know by now...it's a HUGE memory eater...so if you want to do such things...make sure you've got TONS of memory in your machine. (basically, i haven't used that technique fully on an entire character since, tho it has been used on specific areas of characters once in a great while).
but...if done correctly...it will work for you (exspecially if you have a lower resolution character than what i used in that tutorial).
have fun,

oh, yes, when i have read this tut few years ago, and at this time, it was the only complete rigging tutorial, and this tut went really deeper inside the maya's toolset than any other tut... Now, like Mr thuriot say, it's really a starting point for someone trying to learn rigging in maya, and there is lot of other techniques not shown in this tut, but again, i think that for a beginner it's really cool, especially the section where Mr thuriot show how to edit the rotational axes of the joints, i've seen lot of setup where the guys haven't tweaked these local axes, and it was a pain in the ass to animate in fk and to copy channel between limbs... i think even in the maya's online help it isn't shown...this is why i say there is still good tips in this tut ;)
