View Full Version : How to speed up marking menus appearing?
Hi guys
I would like to know if there are any way to speed up marking menu?
For example, when you select an edge --> Ctrl+RMB ---> Edge Loop Utilities ---> To Edge Loop, there are a little "lag" when you are on "Edge Loop Utilities". Is there any way to reduce that time? :scream:
Thanks (as always :) )

That lag is intentional.
You don't have to wait for the menus to appear to select them, so if you know the gesture you have to make, you never even have to see the menus.
Stallion, that has no effect on marking menus.

This is actually something a lot of people don't realize.
In your example the "Edge Loop Util's" are in the down/right direction, and then the "To Edge Loop" is also in the down/right direction. So all you have to do is make one down/right gesture and you'll select the edge loop...you never have to wait for that second menu to show up.
That's an easy one because they are lined up, but I've seen people have menu's a couple deep and they zig-zag around without ever seeing a menu.

marking menus can start to lag more then normal in big scene files. Also, if you have a lot of history or if your script editor has "echo all commands" turned on this can cause Maya to slow down, which will create the lag of the menus.

Cool.
Thank you guys, now I'm faster than wind, lol. :scream:

Thanks for that tip, I never really understood why they put the edgeloop selection in a secondary menu, so slow...until now! :)

this always bothered me, also that they made selecting "to Faces" more difficult in maya 7. This thread inspired me to test the issue and i noticed, that you get directly to your command, when you do your gesture very very quick. thanks!
maybe the marking menu thing is a reason for a "real" workstation with professional grafix hardware.
thanks for the tip too, never thought the secondary MarkingMenus can be so fast to access :) it's really great to get instant executions with all kind of mouse gestures :)
cheers:beer:

haha 2 minutes of playing with the MM's, and damn they're fast!
ctrl, left click, diagonal left down - diagonal right up, here's the select edge ring tool lol, several miliseconds to access :D
cheers again
Awesome, I kinda subconsciously wondered about it.

I don't actually remember where I first heard this explained, but it was by someone from Alias.
The only reason they appear at all after the delay is for you to learn the gestures.
