View Full Version : Maya slowing to a crawl... Help?
arkady1200 12-10-2002, 10:08 PM I'm running maya on a pentiumII 400 with 256 megs of ram with a Velocity 4400 video card wich basically runs the rivaTNT chipset and has 16 megs of memory on board. Look, I know this machine is not exactly a comfortable place for maya to do it's thing, however, I noticed that as time passes, while i'm working on my model, my openGL display ports start slowing down to a crawl. This seems to have something to do with the levels of undo's maybe? When I hold alt and leftMouse and try to rotate the scene, the response time is extremely slow. I was wondering if anyone here would know techniques I can use to avoid this problem, or maybe a way to configure maya to run better on this crappy machine of mine. Any advice helps -- as long as it's not telling me to go out and purchase a new Dell.

i used to run maya on a pc very much like yours... p2400/256/ati rage 16 mb........ and it was always slow :(
one thing i have noticed is that when maya slows down its amost always the video card. But if you realy want to be sure what the problem is next time maya starts to slow down open the task manager and see how much ram youre using, if its running low its most likely you need more, if you have plenty of ram its youre video card...
sorry i cant be anymore help than that

what i recomend you do is clear the history (all of it ) since your modelling and the history starts to pile up its gonna bog you down. hmm thas about it , seriously dude 400mhz , even the simplest models are gonna choke....

good opengling depends only on videocard wich would support that mode. yours doesn't sond like the right one to me. may be it's time for upgrade dude.

I've looked at the recommended video cards on alias' website. Those cards are quite expensive. Can someone recommend a card in a 200 dollar range? Thanks.

I can recommend the Geforce4 4200/4600 if you have Maya 4.5 which is 'less' dependent on highend video card features than the earlier versions. I also have a Geforce 2 Quadro for sale which is excellent for anyversion of maya, you can email me at efosao@hotmail.com if you're interested.
Always get the latest non-beta drivers for whatever card you get though.
