i have downloaded a 30 day version of a new program, called Xfrog that i wanted to share with you my experiences, as it seems very powerful - it is procedural and uses a network of connected nodes to create organic shapes and animations , and they have some free plugins for 3ds max 5, it seems very easy to build really nice models of trees, flowers, bushes and animate them and than use the animation in max.
they sell over 1000 plant models tropical, desert, usa, europe, asia, flowers and so far those look pretty sweet.

Yeah, Xfrog is a really useful tool. Fun, too - you can easily spend hours just noodling with different parameters and making endless varieties of plants, creepie-crawlies, alien-like critters, and microorganism-ish thingies. Definitely two thumbs up!

BTW, Xfrog is far from new - it's been around for quite sometime. The current version is 3.x, and I first played with it (I think) around 3 or 4 years ago. It wasn't new then, either ;)
