I'm going through the tutorials that came with Max8 and there's no greater joy when you try to learn something and the provided material is just doesn't work.

1. Open Help > Tutorials...
2. Getting Started > Materials & Mapping > Introduction to Materials & Mapping > Creating Multi/Sub-Object Materials.

If you scroll down to the "Assign material IDs:" section on that page, it is not possible to execute the instructions as provided because no Multi/Sub-Object Material will be created as outlined by the tutorial.

Could someone tell me why is it not working? Thanks.

That's right, no Multi/Submaterial will be created at that point of time.

You just select the cork-polys, drag and drop the cork material to the selected poys. Then you invert selection and drag/drop the glass material to it. The result is, that max creates to groups of material IDs containing on the one hand the cork polygons, on the other the glass polys. Look at your modify panel -> polygon properties. Mark one poly and you'll see that it's set to one of the 2 IDs that were created.

As it looks like a multi/sub material is not to be created necessarily. Just try it and you'll see, it works. I guess it's just an alternative way to assign different materials to one geometrical body.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm..... i think it must've been my machine last nite. I've tried it at least 6 times and it DID NOT WORK. i even reloaded the scene and still didn't work. This morning I tried it again and what do you know.... now it's working. I guess it was one of those.....

Actually I was wrong. It's very weird. Is there a setting somewhere which disables the creation of multi/sub-materials?

I have 2 installs of Max. One of them is at home (where I use it most, and that's my original install) and one of them is at work, and I use the PLU to xfer the license depending on where I want to use max.

At both places I have max8 (educational license) and SP1 installed. At work, I am able to create multi/sub materials by selecting polys and drag/drop a material over the selection. Works fine.

I am not able to do that at home, however. When I select polys (in epoly subobject mode) and drag a material onto the selection, the whole object receives the material. Then I make a different poly selection (on the same object) and drag a different material onto the selection, you'd expect to have 2 submaterials on the object. But no. The whole object will take on the last material applied, regardless of poly selection.

I'm thinking there's gotta be some switch that disables/enables multi/submaterial creation otherwise it doesn't make any sense why does it work on one machine but not on the other. I looked all the possbile preferences and material settings (so I think...) but I don't find anything the would show a relevance to this phenomena.

Holy Mother of God! After about 5 hours of frustration, I've finally found that little, tiny checkbox under Preferences > General: Sub-Materials Group.

The "Assign Automatically" checkbox HAS TO BE SELECTED IN ORDER FOR THIS TO WORK! Arrrggghhhh.... thank you Tutorial for not mentioning this! :argh:

Oh WOW! I didn't even know that there actually IS an option to enable/disable automatical assignment!

Thanks for your industriousness, that might help the one or other CG Society Member
having the same problem a LOT of frustration (and... time) ;)
