View Full Version : Grain in my Final Gather misss model?

I've tried looking through the forums to understand how to get rid of
grain in my final gather render. (The model has a Misss_skin shader
applied.) I've tried increasing the photon settings, and GI settings, etc.
Nothing I try works. Does anyone know the solution or perhaps
a thread that I have overlooked that I can reference?

Go to your misss shader and adjust your lightmap samples. They're on 64 by default. I usually raise mine by powers (64, 128, 256, 512, 1024....).

I tried increasing the samples, but it didn't get rid of the grain.
It didn't seem to affect it at all.

I even tried recreating a new Misss_fast_skin_maya shader.
the noise went away, but now it renders like a gray object
with no evidence of a image map in the epidermal (front sss layer).

Here are the settings in order of the jpgs with results:

Created new Misss_fast_skin_maya WITH a psd file
placed in the epidermal scatter color:

When I placed a spot light in the scene while performing a final gather,
the image maps were evident again.

Reverted back to previous misss shader:
Lightmap Samples: 1024
Scale conversion: 13

(escaped the render when I saw grain was still apparent)

Lightmap Samples: 64
Scale Conversion: 8

I turned Ray Tracing off and it rendered without noise.
(It's a little plasic looking though. Is it now just
a matter of adjusting the lighting settings in the Misss?)

Isn't Ray Tracing a feature that I should be using with
Final Gathering though???

Can you email me the scene file? thurazor@gmail.com

I can try checking it over.

Also, what are your min/max samples in your render globals?

Thanks for replying Jared.
I'll email the scene to you as soon as I can.

(I'll check the min/max and get back
with you before I try emailing it. Thanks.)

It would be hard to email, because it's a
100 mb file.

Should I have Ray Trace turned off like I do?

Yikes 100mb might be a bit for my inbox to handle. Hmm. Raytracing should always be on assuming you're using lights that are using raytrace shadows. Another thing to check out is your lightmap size on your misss_fast_lmap node. Generally people say it should be twice your render resolution width and equal to your render resolution height. It can be increased beyond these values to smooth out the map, but I'm not sure if that's necassarily the problem in your scene.

If you have an unusually large scale conversion (so it thinks your character is larger) it will cause some artifacts to appear in the render too. So I usually find that it helps to scale your character somewhat correctly in the scene to give Mental Ray easier numbers to work with.
