View Full Version : Good Glass or Diamond technique in Maya ?

Hi,

Just wondering if anyone has experience creating photorealistic transparent objects in Maya. I'm trying to model some gemstones, and haven't managed to get the right look.

In 3D Studio Max, you can make an object double-sided, which helps for glass type of effects. In Lightwave, you used to have to model two surfaces for your object - one is a replica of the other, with polygons flipped. You would then assign an "air" material to one surface, and a "glass" material for the other to better replicate real life when raytracing.

I'm curious as to whether the best approach in Maya is to attempt to replicate a double sided material as in Max, or to take the Lightwave approach ? Or, perhaps there is some other Maya method that I am not aware of ? Any input would be much appreciated.

I'm trying to get a nice diamond effect, with refraction and some kind of fresnel shader effect. Is that possible ?

Cheers ;)

The "fresnel" effect is called facing ratio. You can find it in the sampler info node. Just drive your refraction with the facing ratio and that should help alot. You can also do double surface shading, but it can be a little more complex depending on what it is exactly you are trying to do.

I would highly suggest purchasing AW's advanced shading networks CD rom it will really help you understand how maya's renderer works.

Thanks for the tips, Lyr. Will definitely investigate your suggestions further. I think a bit of playing around and practice is required ;)

Thanks again,
