Hey all,

im working in my first full time position for a small production house that makes 15-30 second spots....nothing flash and no real renderfarm to speak of but you have to start somewhere right.

anyway....it's been a little slow at work this week so i decided to ATTEMPT to cut together my first reel of the stuff i'v made working at said company. I do need advice for this edit as i really dont know what i'm doing. The company is small (3 people who work in graphics...me the only real 3d person) so i haven't had any opportunity to really specialize my skill set but im thinking more and more about the lighting/rendering side so i tried to show as much of that as possible but the reel itself is still kind of generic, all purpose 3D.

anyway i'm very interested to here what the real pros have to say.

thanks in advance for your time and best wishes.

Nathaniel

(ps I haven't put in the endscreen/name details etc etc but there is a black 5-6 sec space at the end for that).

(pps sorry for the crap wmv also....i olny have 10meg of webspace)

Well im definatly no pro. im not even at the point of working with fellow artists, yet. you mentioned its a generic 3d reel and id have to say most of it works together well. dont know if you have time to rework any of those pieces, if you do, id maybe rerender that office, the one with the BOSS! mug. it looks beginner like, not sure how tho. and tweak up the animation with the wooden puppet. i was thinking you should take that out but its your only bit of character work. so rework it if you can. also did you model all those cars and are you responsible for all the work in every one of those shots. maybe have a bit of information on the screen saying what you did when a shot comes up you didnt do all of the work. that can, of wine?..boogie nights? its hard to tell its 3d might as well be 2d ya know it doesnt really do anything. and see how the reel works with that piece of novoshoes first, might not, its neat tho. good luck.

thanks for the replies guys.

Raoul, It's pretty unlikely i'll have time to rework anything at the moment...its a difficult situation as alot of the design decisions are from the client (ie BOSS mug) and time contrainsts with rendering...as i said we dont have an extensive renderfarm so it would be difficult. The Cars in the car shot(red carpet one) are bought models (was planning to put the credit on the DVD but do you think i should put it in the actual video as well?) but reworked and textured to make them more Australian (ie right side drive, Level of detail, License plates removed). all these jobs are 1 man jobs tho so apart from a few models used from the lightwave content (Some of the stuff on the desk in Boss mug clip and the other car one with the background in the shot with the close up of the black car in the car park at night...again was planning on putting this on the dvd).

I will definately try using the Novo as an opener thanks for that suggestion.
I do agree with your comments about the boogie nights clip....i spose i included that more for the brand itself..(its getting quite alot of advertising atm in Australia).
In terms of character animation....yeah thats it i'm afraid. Haven't had much call to really get stuck into it....i think i can probably rework that tho and use different parts of the clips.
thanks for pointing that out.

anyway thanks for your prompt replies.
