View Full Version : Honduras bans violent videogames
Array 12-10-2002, 06:09 PM http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/54/28511.html
The move comes in reaction to rising levels of violent crime in the country, much of which is blamed on youth gangs known as "maras". Given that Honduras is one of the poorest countries in the western hemisphere, with 53 per cent of the population living under the poverty line, we're really not sure how influential games and toys are in the criminal scene in the country.

it'll be an interesting social experiement... "After the games riots stopped the costs of rebuilding what was left crippled the Honduras economy..."
of course it could lead to some interesting questions if crime levels do fall,,, but it'll take years for any influence to appear, and even if they did over such a period it would be easy to see that as a result of other measures. of course it could pave the way for some games companies creating some better non-violent games, such as the old lucasarts classics, monkey island etc... (or are the sword fighting scenes and explding ghost deemed too violent for their government)... well it always pays to try and look on the bright side of things right?

I dont believe banning violent video games will have any positive impact. I tend to agree with the idea that media and government scare tactics are what lead to violence, as portrayed in "Bowling for Columbine". If you have seen the movie, the director states that Canada has just as many guns, violent video games, and violent movies as the USA, but only a fraction of the violent crime that occurs in the USA. Obviously guns and violent media arent the problem (no I dont own a gun, and I am not a member of the NRA).

hmm... i don't know, could be, could be not. i don't know the stats, but it's hard to ignore the kids in my neighbourhood hanging on all teh corners selling crack. the only thing i've seen work in our time was what happened in new york, zero tolerance coupled with urban regeneration programs. cut handouts and teach poeple how to look after themselves... unfortunately in america there's a lot of poeple who think that society somehow owes them, coupled with a lack of empathy, and because they've been trained to think that way, if society doesnt give it, they'll damn well go and take it, not caring about the method and without thought for the consequences.
dit... load of reiteraing nonses removed
anyhow i agree... but it'll be interesting to see what happens anyway... how long it takes before they allow those games back in.

Well they should go play some videogames instead of selling crack. If I didn't have video games I bet I would be some drug alchool addict wandering the streets aimlessly. Any of those kids who becomes violent because of games is less than 0.25% of gamers, so nyah to them:P

this has already happened in Greece. Only they went to a more extreme level, they banned all video games, if you are caught playing tetris in public (ie a coffee shop or the beach) you could be arrested.
ridiculous!!!!!
like that is really gonna do anything??????
its like.....hey, we cant stop all the drugs from coming into the country and we cant stop all the violence because of said drugs....whats the next thing that could potentially influence peoples behaviour??
The ultra scare tactic oriented news??? Parents beating their kids??? Kids moving out and getting married at 14?? nah, wait! Video Games!!!!! they depict violence right???? ban em!!! and you wont have to worry about losing all the taxes like alcohol (and we all know alcohol doesnt cause violent behaviour....its games!).
What the hell is this world coming to???? I think people need to start taking responsibility for their own actions and stop trying to blame everything else!!!!!!
And look at it this way, if it werent for the Video Game, Movie, and Porn industry we would not be NEAR the level we are at in advancements in technology.......so everyone wants to get rid of those 3 "evils" but said "evils" could be what leads to the cure for cancer or some other discovery that will save millions!!!!
Be respectful of entertainment technology!!! Its the main reason we are today with computers and the internet.....i wish more people would realize that!!!!

Would that be a Coffeshop in the Dutch sence of the word, because i doubt it would have been the Gameboy that got someone arrested ;)
Anyway, what people always overlook is the most simple and logical thing:
Parents : THEY have to teach there kids what's wrong or right, but starting in the 80s we got this stupid liberal free thinking that kids are not to be touched in anyway.
Let me tell you, i'm not thinking we should go back to the 1940's and beat the shit out of kids as parents, but i think kids should be punished when doing bad shit (i know i have, and when i walk the streets it look like i've landed in some world portrait by Dante, all these kids look as if they are completely socialy de-railed, and i'm 26 for crying out loud...)
Yes the media 'could' have influence, yes violent games 'could' have influence, but it's ultimatly the parents who have to decide how much influence these media and games will have on there kids (Noooo, these days AND daddy AND mommy have to work, leaving the kids at some day care centre where its only guessing the kids will get the upbringing you are used to, it's like people buying a dog but when they go on vacation the poor critter is tied to a tree in the forrest and left to rot.)
Anyway, these are my 2 euro cents (1 euro cent = 1.0075 US dollar cent at 11:00 GMT +1, 11/12/2002).
Besides this whole game crap/ game banning has been discussed before a gazillion times by now (it started with Wolfenstein all those years ago, you remember...)
I'd say end of stupid friggin thread...
