View Full Version : Blackhawk Composite
RAZ22 02-12-2006, 06:10 AM Hey all,
I've posted this message in the Gallery section but also wanted to make a topic here in the Compositing section as well.
I've just finished a new composite shot of a UH-60L Blackhawk helicopter coming into a low hover and wanted to pass along the URL. The 8 second shot, in various resolutions and sizes as well as with a complete breakdown, can be found at:

Any comments or suggestions on how it could be improved for next time are welcome and appreciated. Thanks!

Good job.
Good a few crits: I think the BlackHawk is too sharp against the background, especially the sky. DV material always has a little fringe on the high contrast edges of dark and light areas in the picture. The reflections on the front window don't match to the movement and I'm not really sure about it, but I think the pilot is missing.
@nelsig:"The model, complete with texture, was provided by Meshfactory. Animation and rendering out of Maya, compositing in Shake, audio mixed in Soundtrack Pro."

scrimski: Thanks for taking a look! The pilot is there, but only in the "low poly space filler" sense. As for the DV edges: this interests me very much. I had actually not thought about that and was wondering if you could point me in the direction of some images where I could take a look at that? I want to be able to replicate that effect in future comps.
And nelsig: As scrimski pointed out, the model is from Meshfactory and the apps were Maya, Shake, and Soundtrack. As for the timeframe, that's a little harder to answer. My full time job has me answering Shake questions and troubleshooting Shake all day, but if I get down time during breaks or tests I can focus on some personal stuff. I'd say, all in all, I started working on it at the end of December, worked on it piece by piece whenever I had time in January, and put it out yesterday. :)
Thanks again!

Have a look at that sample picture. It was shot on miniDV with no additional light and shows it quite good, especially when you zoom in.
It appears usuall between static foreground and moving background(in this case the clouds/sky in the background).
Don't know, if 'fringe' is the right term for this, but I have seen this very often on miniDV and DV material. You could achieve this with a light glow set to 'add' or 'lighten'(terms in PS and AE).
As for the pilot: It's hard to see one, it could be one there(actually there is one), but it's very hard to see, even if I know there is one and it is defintely missing.

sidenote:
Similar (same?) effects can also be seen with higherend video cameras such as Digibeta. I
think its the electronic sharpening which happens in camera. Set your "detail" parameter accordingly when shooting greenscreen with digibeta, so that there is no electronic sharpening. The images might look a bit softer but you'll have much less problems when keying. I guess with consumer dv cameras you won't have the option to turn it off.
