A regular monitor is called a CRT (Cathode Ray Tube (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cathode_ray_tube)). The flat computer monitors are Liquid Crystal Displays (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liquid_crystal_display).

CRTs are still better, though LCDs are gaining all the time.

People doing professional video work often choose CRTs because of the better motion resolution (less lag). I still think professional grade CRTs offer better resolution than LCDs.

However, most people find the LCD image more pleasing to the eye, as flicker is less noticeable. It's getting harder to find CRTs in the stores these days. Probably an LCD is what you want.

If you plan on staring at the display many hours a day, a LCD will be much easier on your eyes.

I have been a CRT user until this past week, and I have to say I love my LCD. I did a bit of research, (hair pulling) and bought the new Viewsonic 20 in. I can see a huge difference between it and my CRT, (2 Trinitrons.) Although my CRT's may have been slightly past their Prime, the LCD displays much more information. It seems much brighter and I’ve done side by side comparisons and you can see things, (in digital paintings esp) that the CRT doesn’t show. I think the values are better, thus producing a better image. It is a newer monitor from Viewsonic and does have 16.7 million colors, (I emailed them, as well as waited on the phone for 23 mins.) Anyway it was an arduous process so I figured I’d share. oh and its responce time is 8ms, and I havn't been able to see any difference in speed.
